Editorial review from Citysearch 12/29/2012

Beware of Smith Mechanical. Referred to us by our home warranty contractor (HMS) when our hot water heater started leaking in the middle of winter. When you call no one answers the phone - ever. You always have to leave a message and someone calls you back. We called roughly 10 times trying to arrange things. You will receive a voice mail as if you are calling a personal cell phone. There is no indication you are calling a legitimate company. We had to pay a 100 dollar deductible for someone to come to our home and look at our hot water heater for less than 2 minutes. A plain white van with no insignia suggesting they are a genuine contractor. Afterwards we received a call from our home warranty contractor asking if we would like to proceed with Smith Mechanical to replace our hot water heater. The home warranty person reviewed what Smith Mechanical had quoted them. There were multiple odd charges that totaled nearly 800 dollars to replace our hot water heater. Take into consideration the hot water heater was completely covered by our warranty, and the 800 was Smith Mechanical?s charges that we would have to absorb. They quoted various charges such as 200 to hall away the old hot water heater, over 200 to re-do a gas line, nearly 200 to re-do some wiring, and other charges that I can not recall. Our home is only 6 years old. After researching on-line reviews and Better Business Bureau complaints filed against Smith Mechanical we elected to get a second opinion from a licensed contractor. They said we were being scammed and that the cost (labor, parts, hauling away the old hot water heater) for replacing our hot water heater would be no more than 250-350 total. We were lucky we did some research. The cost of the hot water heater and labor was all covered by our warranty. That would not have been the case with Smith Mechanical. more

HORRIBLE - do not use! Smith was 6/8/2012

HORRIBLE - do not use! Smith was assigned to us by our warranty company as well. First of all, they do not answer the phone. Ever. And they don't return calls. After my warranty company called them for me twice, they finally called me and told me they would have someone out within an hour - I was at work - good thing my husband was home! We paid our $100 deductible only to find out the service wasn't covered under the warranty. So I called Smith and left a message to call me back to schedule the service anyway. Waited three hours, no call. Called again and left a message, no call. Three more hours and I had my husband call and leave a message. No call. Finally decided to eat the $100 and go with someone who actually answers the phone. Ridiculous. more

Do NOT use for home warranty work! 2/20/2011

Smith mechanical was also assigned to me by my home warranty company. They decided we needed a new water heater and that was covered by our warranty. They took our $100 deductible check and said they would be back Friday to replace WH. On Friday after several calls to them and warranty company they said Monday was the best they could do. I called them back again to beg for the WH so I did not have to go all weekend without hot water and Dave yelled at me repeatedly that it was my insurance companies fault, not his. I had enough and hung up. Within 2 minutes Dave called my husband and said find another company because he was ""not dealing with your wife,"" mind you he already cashed my $100 check. After several calls to the insurance, they made them replace the WH. The day of the service my dad (a plumber himself) was there with the extra needed parts and such and they refused to use them or let my dad install it himself. We had to pay them an extra $220 over the deductible for parts my dad purchased at Home Depot for less than $30 bucks. They also wanted $175 to haul the WH away! We took it to the local recycling center ourself and they gave us $10 bucks for it! These guys were jokes and are totally running a scam to people who have the cost of the WH covered by the insurance. more

Excellent work ethic, very professional, but not a cheap fix... 2/15/2008

Although Smith is a Union contractor, his company hires only comptent licensed plumbers, which is sometimes pricey, but in the end, the work is done correctly, and properly to code. Pros: Licensed Cons: Expensive more
