Editorial review from Citysearch 10/18/2013

Just finished another excellent experience at Sheepherders. Manager Susan Gonzales set up our Noon luncheon with 8 attendees in the conference room. Food was excellent, service prompt and after meeting there for the past year Susan remembered us, was prompt in handling our requests and the food and drinks were promptly served. We have scheduled future meetings at the same room for the coming year. John Brideson, Chairman Sig Seniors of Sacramento more

Editorial review from Citysearch 2/19/2013

First time at this restaurant and we had a wonderful experience! You get what you pay for. Very high quality from the bread and salad to the steaks through dessert. The portions are large which is great for leftovers the next day. \r \r Our service was very friendly, attentive, and timely. The place is beautiful with the large fireplace in the main dining room. Definitely a great place for a romantic dinner for two. If you are looking for an excellent meal, great service, and a night out with or without kids. Sheepherders is a perfect place. We will be making this a regular stop. more

My husband, brother, mother and myself 5/29/2012

My husband, brother, mother and myself went to Sheepherders May 26. We had 7:15 p.m. reservations. The waitress arrives to the table and asks to bring us drinks. At that time I told her I checked into Facebook so we'd also like our appetizer. I asked her what was good and she suggested a couple of things. She took the drink order while we figured out what we wanted as appetizers and comes back to let us know that the ""free"" appetizer was bruschetta. So we ordered the bruschetta as well as mussels and Thai Chicken Lettuce wraps. She comes back 10 minutes later saying the appetizers will be right up and she takes our dinner order. When ordering prime rib, she asked how I like it. I asked what their (Sheepherder's) medium is. She said it was ""standard"". I told her that didn't tell me anything and she said red in the middle and pink on the outside. I told her their medium was perfect for me. Our appetizers arrived 10-15 minutes later. The mussels on top of the bowl were cold. The broth was warm as were the mussels in the broth. Although the mussels were overcooked, they were tasty. There was no ""bone"" bowl delivered to our table to put the empty shells into. Literally (and I am not exaggerating) two minutes after the appetizers arrived, our dinners arrived. My brother had not even had time to wrap the chicken into one piece of lettuce. We pushed aside the appetizers because we did not want to eat our dinners when they were cold. Ended up sending the mussels back, they weren't worth eating anyway. My brother's prime rib was done as he liked it, medium well. My mother's dinner looked delicious. (Fish & Chips) My husband's pizza looked good, though it was lukewarm. We asked for extra cheese for the pizza and the busboy brought out two ramekins, one with dried red chili pepper and parmesan cheese. There was no spoon to dispense the peppers or cheese. My prime rib was over done and was sent back. I sat at that table for 10-15 minutes without my food. The waitress came to check on the rest of the table and said my prime rib would be right up. After a while, the waitress came out and knelt by me and said that she was told there was no more prime rib. The reason I was given the over done prime rib was because it was the last piece. The waitress was very apologetic and sympathetic, offering to get me anything I wanted. I could do nothing but laugh. I could not believe what was happening. So, I ended up not eating because by this time, the rest of my party was nearly through eating. To ""compensate"" us for the comedy of errors, the appetizers and drinks were comped and we only paid for the three meals eaten by my brother, mom and husband. The mix-up with the prime rib was not the waitress's fault. She should not have been made to come out to my table to apologize and explain that there was a banquet and another large group of people and that is why I was sent a well done piece of prime rib rather than being told straight up that there was only two pieces left and neither was medium The chef or manager should have come out and apologized to me. As we were sitting there looking around, we noticed the busboys cleaning dirty tables of their dishes, washing dirty tables with dish rags, shaking patron's hands and then setting the table with clean setups and glassware and plates without going to wash their hands. We were staying at a hotel next to this restaurant and suffice it to say, they have been informed of this experience. more

New Ownership 9/1/2010

All of the reviews currently on Citysearch are reviewing the older ownership and restaurant. In 2009 the restaurant changed hands. The food, atmosphere and service are excellent. Go for the food, especially the prime rib/french dip that they are known for. Keep coming back for the service you receive and the friends you will make. There is also an awesome happy hour. more

Great atmosphere, so-so service 12/9/2008

The Sheepherder Inn's long refurbishment is worth the wait. The remodeled building has all of the charm of the old building, but with a new, rustic-but-elegant feel. more

Sheepherder Inn 11/22/2008

The food was outstanding. The service was pretty good. Short wait for dinner. VERY good with our son. Drinks are over priced for the size but are still good. Pros: Ambience, food more

Terrible service 6/26/2008

I have to admit the ambiance was very nice, they did a nice job renovating. About 10 ladies and I went to Sheepherders for a retirement party, sat in the bar area. Our server was very slow and never checked to see how we where doing. We ordered drinks, for a double Grey Goose they charged $16, $3 for club soda. The food was not good. The calamari was soggy. And to top it off they charged an 18% gratuity. We where sitting in the bar area, and we got terrible service. I don?t mind paying for good service, but this was not good. I will never go to Sheepherders again. Pros: Beautiful interior Cons: bad food and service for price more

Dissapointed 5/23/2008

I was so sad when Sheepherders closed....it was my favorite restaurant. My family and I use to go there all the time for birthdays and get togethers. About a month ago my family and I went there for my grandmothers birthday. This was our first time going there since it had closed, so we were very excited. As soon as walked into the restaurant my excitement quickly went away. I could not believe how bad they F'd UP such a unique, historical landmark to make it look just like every other boring upscale restaurant in the Sacramento area. If my family wanted to go to a modern restaurant they would have picked from the many carbon copied restaurants available downtown. What a dissapointment....historical charm is what made it different, and different is good. Now there is nothing special about it. Sad. The food is nothing special either. It's 1-800-BORING! The food tasted bland and was way overpriced. My whole family and I will never go back. I hope business fails so that another owner who actually cares about historical charm can take over and bring back this once unique beauty. Pros: Customer service was good Cons: everything else more

Sorry to say, not the same 5/22/2008

What a disappointment our visit was - we decided to try the ""new"" Sheepherders with much anticipation & excitement, as it had been years since we were there. We did not like the new menu or the food when it came. Mashed potatos had no flavor or seasonings (although they were supposed to be garlic) & meat tasted left over from previous day. Bread was good, but butter looked & tasted like margarine. In addition, we sat at a booth where there were ants crawling up the wall - one entered my bread plate & walked around. When we pointed this out, they said they were aware of it. Yuk! We will go back if/when they return to the ""old"" Sheepherders. Pros: Ambiance Cons: Ants crawling up wall & on edge of table. more

Excellent Customer Service 4/17/2008

My husband and I planned his mother's 70th birthday party at the Sheepherder's Inn. We received excellent customer service from beginning to end. The event coordinator was pleasant and very helpful with suggestions. The servers were very accomodating, outgoing, and on top of everything. The food was served for about 40 people and it was prepared perfectly. Everyone raved about the food and the service. My mother-in-law was very pleased and commented on how the food was so good and also the service. I would recommend this place for anyone that is planning an event. You will not be sorry. Pros: Food Yummy, Service Awesome more

Sparkling gem in Sacramento 3/24/2008

I am surprised to see any comments with poor service ratings. I have been there multiple times since January for dinner and lunch, bills ranging from $30 - $220. I would bring anyone here, any time. The food is fabulous, the service is wonderful. The bar is a little slow on busy nights but that is how it goes when the bar is as packed as the SHI. The 22oz Porterhouse might be the best steak we have ever had and the Bouliabaise is to die for. Pros: delicious food, great variety Cons: my stomach isn't big enough for the large portions more

Sheepherders is a great asset to the area 3/17/2008

Sheepherders is a great asset to an area that is in sore need of nice restaurants. We have had many business and social lunches and dinners in the past 5 months and have never been disappointed. Judging by the crowds each time I've been there, I am not the only one who has been very satisfied with the service and meals. If I had one (small) criticism it would be the lack of ""lite"" meals. I always start off thinking I'll ""be good"" but fall prey to the chowder or the pork sliders. If this was one of 50 restaurants perhaps I would judge Sheepherders a little more critically, but given the competition, I give it 5 stars. Awesome Irish Coffees. Pros: location Cons: no low cal options more

Sorry to hear its been remodeled inside, lost old charm 12/8/2007

Its sad to hear the restaurant is not the same. I was so excited when I heard it was reopening. It was my favorite place for years. I loved the charm and sorry to hear they have changed it. I wont be going back there. more

It is not the same, it is better!!! 11/25/2007

Many years ago, I took my son to this restaurant to celebrate him getting his driver's licence. The food was good and we enjoyed our lunch. I was very sad when it closed. Hearing that it reopened, my son and his family decided to surprise my husband and I with an anniversary dinner at the newly opend restaurant. It was a wonderful meal and the building looked beautiful. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to go back as a family for Thanksgiving. We were lucky to get in as they were booking up fast. Our meals were wonderful, especially the prime rib, which according to my husband is the best he has ever had. I was a little nontraditional and chose the Halibut. It was delicious ( I loved the crispy polenta and the yummy sauce), as far as I am concerned it is the best halibut in town. The Turkey dinners, had by the rest of the family, got rave reviews. It was a wonderful way to spend Thankgiving, no stress, great food and service and of course NO DISHES!! Everyone should do this! This is definately not the same Sheepherder restaurant of yester year, it is better! Thanks to Justin for the delcious Buena Vista and thanks to Ralph for his attentive service. We will be back year after year after year. Pros: Wonderful atmosphere, drinks, appetizers and food. Cons: Would have loved the fireplaces to be lit more

Thanksgiving Dinner was AWSOME! 11/22/2007

The Sheepherder's Inn was most definitely the perfect place to spend Thanksgiving with my family. The only downside was that the only time available was at 3pm, and it was a bit early for dinner. The renovated building looks like the old Sheep, but once I stepped inside I was so amazed with the beauty of the new place. They have done a great job in keeping the essence of the old place and giving it a nice, clean new look! For dinner we started off with the calamari appetizer which was cooked to perfection. My family had the Turkey Dinner, which was just as good as MY Thanksgiving minus the labor. I personaly had the Prime Rib, which was excellent! Our server was very plesant and attentive, along with the rest of the staff. Our experience was wonderful and we will be back again. No wonder 3:00pm was the only time slot left! I will remember to reserve early next time! Pros: good service, great food, beautiful place! Cons: dinner at 3pm more

POOR FOOD/SERVICE, ERROR ON BILL, DISMAL INTERIOR DESIGN, LOST ALL CHARACTER 10/26/2007

A 10-03-07 meal for $97.96 for two people (after TWO adjustments made on bill). Stingy with cold, tasteless bread. Mediocre shrimp appetizer. Good coffee. Cold meals!!! Undercooked scallops. Porterhouse tender. NO baked potato on menu!!! Waitress (Lisa P.) substituted the twice-baked with a tasty salad. Then she charged for the salad's overage on the bill. Error corrected/credited upon payment. Garlic on food served when requested not. Asked for horseradish THREE times over 50 min. time span. Complained to Manager. He took $20 off the bill. Waitress never checked if meal was satisfactory. Horseradish finally served ---in tacky plastic bottle still sealed! Kept waiting for items and issues to be managed. Two creme brulees seemed more like custard instead of heavy cr/yolks/sugar ingredients....cheated on the real thing! Pros: good coffee/steak cooked well/good salad/calamari good Cons: cold food/poor and untimely service/NO baked pot/bad bread/subpar creme brulee/billing error/needs big windows/ambiance sterile more

Never again.... 10/15/2007

Wanting to try the 'new' Sheepherders Inn, my wife and I had dinner there last night. The front desk folks, while young, were very friendly and polite. The menu was varied enough for us and the service was good. However, the 'fresh' bread they brought apparently had been from yesterday as it was so dry my wife would not eat it. And she LOVES bread. I had the smoky bacon clam chowder, Caesar salad, and 8 oz Filet Mignon. The clam chowder was very good, but the filet was covered with some sort of reduction sauce that I found not very appealing. My wife had the Asian chicken salad, and crab cake sliders. She thought the salad was excellent, but the crab cake aoili made the little 'hamburger bun' they were served in quite soggy. Anyway, we finished the meal and and went home. This morning I awoke to the most awful gastrointestinal distress I have had in quite a LONG time. My diet before the Sheepherder meal was very bland through the day, so I know that something in the food at the Sheepherders Inn was responsible. If I had to guess, I would lean toward the reduction sauce on the filet mignon. In any event, we will NOT be eating there anytime soon. I plan to contact the manager and advise him/her of the problem, as well as the county of Sacramento. more

A BAD CHANGE FOR THE SHEEPHERDER 10/11/2007

We have been going to the sheepherder for years and when they closed to remodel we new it was not going to be the same and it is NOT>...........very disappointed with the look of the inside and the food.........take it back to what it was, why do we as a society want to always change the best things going. Cons: THUMBS WAY DOWN more

She's not the memorable steakhouse she used to be. 10/8/2007

The new Sheepherder's Inn: Pros: Its open, remodel is nice. Clam Chowder is Great! Cons: No Prime Rib, French Dip, very pricey, loss of historical charm more

Great customer servive!!! 9/25/2007

Beautiful atmosphere...I hope they make it! I worked at the old Sheepherder Inn for 8 years and i'm so impressed with what they have done with the place!! The menu looks good..haven't eaten there yet, but the wine was good!! As a bartender...that matters!!! Cheers!!!! more
