Needs New Owners 4/24/2010

This place needs a new owner. The food and service was terrible and all the while the owner, who is married, was spending all his attention on his lady friend... who he is obviously having an affair with. I thought someone said that this placed was named after his son? The poor kid, I wonder if his wife will leave him. Tangents... but the point is that if he spent 1/4 the amount of time paying attention to his customers and his food as he does to his mistress this place might be half way decent. I mean honestly... how do you mess up sushi. Don't waste your time, money or breath on this dump. Pros: Not One Cons: Too Many Too List more

Not worth the price 9/8/2009

The fish was pretty fresh, but we have several issues: Pros: Fresh fish Cons: Very expensive, limited choices, slowwwwwwww service more

Never Again 6/9/2009

I can't think of a single nice thing to say about these guys. Long wait, rude staff, poor service and the fish wasn't very fresh. I was sick all night after eating here and would never recommend this place to anyone. Never again. And the owner/chef was such a jerk2me. Pros: None That I Can Think Of Cons: Bad Food more

Worms.... 8/27/2008

There were worms in my fish. The server was rude, and when I asked for my money back, they refused. I will never step foot in this place again. Cons: worms, service more

Outstanding sushi. 6/4/2008

What a wonderful sushi mecca! The fish is incredibly fresh, and the sushi chefs extraordinary. Although the sushi bar only seats 6, it is worth waiting for a seat at the bar. Without a doubt, the prices are very expensive. I highly recommend the Omakase, but be prepared to spend close to $100 without alcohol. Is it worth it? You bet! This is not the place to get a quick bite and run. This meal should be an adventure. Plan to spend some time and put your trust in the hands of the sushi chef! The choice of fish depends on what was available in Japan that morning. There were many types of fish that I have not seen before. They make their own blend of soy sauce, and use a premium sushi rice. If you have a chance, read a book called ""The Zen of Fish."" A fabulous book on the history and art of sushi. Then, go to Sebo and enjoy! Pros: Outrageously amazing sushi prepared by sushi masters. Cons: Outrageously expensive. more

best. sushi. ever! 2/23/2008

This is the tastiest sushi in san francisco! Perfect portion size and so fresh and flavorful. A little expensive, but well worth it. more

Sushi quality is good 11/17/2007

As a person from Japan, I was quite surprised that the sushi here was pretty good. I guess it is supposed to be a ""Tokyo-style"" sushi, whatever that is. I liked the simple Zen-ish decor and lighting. But because they don't take reservations, we had to wait for about 45 minutes. And the serving is quite slow. I would recommend thinking this place as a Sake bar with good sushi as appetizers. I think it will be VERY pricey to get full by just eating the tiny sushis and donburis as real dinner. It would also be nice if there are more variety of nigiris, appetizers and drinks. Next time I will go as if I am going to a nice bar. Pros: Sushi quality is like I am in Japan! Cons: A little too pricey.. more

Are they EVER open?? 8/12/2007

I've tried to eat at Sebo several times, but while it is supposed be open from 6 to 10, I've shown up 6:20 and they still hadn't set up, and at 9:30, and been told they're not seating any more people. Their reason was that since they had had a busy night, they figured they'd close early. The finickiness is just too aggravating. Pretentious attitude, pretentious decor, pretentious prices--having lived in Hayes Valley for 20 years, I've seen a dozen businesses like this come and go. more

Prepare to get bent over the barrel! 1/31/2007

I predict that this restaurant will be out of business in 6 months or less. Pros: no wait Cons: outrageously expensive, small portions, limited selection more

Unique sushi, price is outrageous, good quality 10/31/2006

They had some hard-to-find sushi that you don't normally see in most sushi restaurants. The one that we liked the most was ""Aji."" We had several kinds of nigiri and sashimi. Everything was very fresh and tasty. However, the rice part of the nigiri is too small. Not that I like large chunks of rice, but it was really, really small. Pros: unique sushi/fish, good service, good ambiance Cons: super high prices (i think the highest I've seen so far), small nigiri & sashimi more

absolutely delicious~ 10/17/2006

we have been looking for a local sushi place to satisfy our cravings and we definitely found in here! we ordered only nigiri and loved everything we ordered (wish other restaurants would use fresh wasabi). we ate at the bar and the owner/chef described their philosophy on fish and pointed out some fish (and other sashimi) we have never tried before. all of his suggestions were perfect! it is a tad on the expensive side but well worth it. i have yet to find a sushi place like this since kabuto. (i also am a big fan of kiss sushi). i thought the service was fantastic as well. maybe its because we sat at the bar *shrug*. Pros: great choice for sushi connoisseurs. Cons: not a good choice if you're looking for chicken teriyaki. more

not for anyone serious about sushi 8/7/2006

i was so excited to try this place, b/c the reviews made it sound like it was a good place for serious sushi lovers (i.e. no rolls, teriyaki, etc.). i don't mind paying a premium for really good sushi, but not only was this place outrageously priced (i.e. $9 for regular tuna nigiri), but it tasted horrible. presentation was sloppy, service was slow, and fish was mediocre. Pros: good location Cons: sushi more

Great new spot in Hayes Valley 7/24/2006

I'm hesitant to write a great review because I don't want to have to fight the crowds that will go... Simply put, it's a great environment - very intimate and the fish is arguably the best you'll find in SF. The service was gracious, even when I mistakenly requested more soy sauce in which I drowned my fish, they didn't bat an eye... A closer look at the menu revealed the advice to not drown the food... Honestly, I can't even remember the edemame or miso, but if you're looking for more americanized creations, go to Sushi Rock, Blowfish or Ace... This is a great meal and experience. Pros: Best fish, excellent ambience, friendly service Cons: Very small, may have to wait a while for a seat more

Wow...Sushi, Service and Personality 4/29/2006

My friend had read about this restaurant...I have to say, I don't read the reviews and the magazine articles....but this place was great. The owners are wonderful, kind and knowledgable men that really know how to serve great Sushi. The selection of fish was great. The sake menu was broad and the entire dining experience was one of the best I have had in the city. While I hate to recommend it, the sushi bar is the best place to sit in the place...then you not only get the benefit of the great food, but also the great personalities of the owners Michael and Danny. Pros: Food, Ambience, Owners more

A msut try 4/26/2006

Great spot if you like to enjoy your sushi in a quiet relaxing sophisticated setting. Sitting at the sushi bar is the best part watching great chefs make their food. Thsushi no doubt is the freshest around. Atmosphere is relaxing and not overbearing. great spot for a relaxed quiet date... Ill be back more

Disappointing..... 4/26/2006

We live right around the corner, and I am huge sushi fan so I was really looking forward to this place joining the neigborhood. Unfortunately, I will not go back, wouldn't even do it on someone else's dime. The sushi was not bad, but it wasn't that good either, and the service stunk. The menu does not tell you that they serve miso soup or edamame, but they do. By the way, skip the miso - it is very salty, and the edamame is very mediocre. Those items are suppose to get your pallet ready, not make you sour faced. I write this review in hopes that the place either gets better or gets out. I know that may sound harsh, but I think they can do better and I really want them to because they are so close to me! Cons: service, menu, food more

Rare and delicious 4/14/2006

My first experience at Sebo was unexpectedly magnificent. Owners Michael and Dan served up varieties of fish rare to San Francisco, using preparations I had never tasted before (thats rightthey are the sushi chefs behind the bar). And then there was the sake. Sebos carefully curated sake list features brews hardly available anywhere else (they are supplied by True Sake across the street). Try this place before it becomes packed with those eager to get in on the ground floor of one of the Citys best sushi spots. And dont forget to sit at the bar, where Michael and Dan will give you plenty of backstory for every bite you enjoy. Pros: Service, Sake list, Rare sushi more
