Waited 35 minutes even though we had a reservation. food was ok but not great. would not go back

A n accpetable meal, but poorly run restaurant. 7/14/2009

I had read some really good on-line reviews, though when I asked people in person most people told me that they had a negative experience. Well, I wanted to think that hey were wrong so I took a friend for a special night out. I made reservations . . . we arrived on time (though we had to park blocks away - tiny lot). But then the hostess said our table was not ready. We sat at bar . . . for 45 minutes. Nice bartender, but hostess NEVER ONCE came to give us an update. Mind you we had a reservation. Finally she seats us at a table that had been available for the whole 45 minutes hat we sat there waiting. My friend said the duck was the best he had ever had. My meal was forgettable (not terrible, just okay). . . couldn't tell you what I had, but it was expensive. While we were there there was one table with a regular and the waitstaff and owner were fawning over that customer, but I got the impression that they didn't really care too much about someone who was trying them out for the first (and last) time. I have a shop in town & people often ask me to recommend a good restaurant in town. I wouldn't send them to Scutra; I don't think they would shop in my store again. Too bad I was excited to think that there might be a nice Belgian/French bistro in this town. For French, try Le Petit Robert, it's not in this town, but it is excellent with incredible, attentive service. Pros: My friend said the duck was the best ever. Cons: Unprofessional hostess ruined the experience. more

Horrible food, horrible service, horrible employer!!!! 3/26/2009

So heres the low down on Scutra --- From a former employee! First and foremost, walk by the ""KITCHEN"" door at Scutra and peek in the glass windows. THE KITCHEN IS NASTY! How bout the owners who mysteriously forget to pay you for hours that you had worked and when you ask about this they get mad. Immigration could clean the kitchen better than bleach can, ONLY THE CHEF IS A CITIZEN! THE REST NO HABLA INGLES! Hmmm how bout the so called ""manager"" whose like 30something and lives off the tips of cheap Arlingtonians! GREAT EXAMPLE OF WHY KIDS SHOULD GO TO COLLEGE! Oh and lets see last but not least --- LIEING TO MY UNEMPLOYMENT ADJUSTER STATING THAT I QUIT, WHEN IN FACT I WAS HIRED AND LET GO FOR NO APPARENT REASON. ALL I ASKED WAS FOR MORE SHIFTS, MORE OPPORTUNITY TO EARN MORE MONEY! STAY AWAY FROM SCUTRA! TRY THE ARLINGTON DINER ITS MUCH BETTER THAN SCUTRA!!!!!! Pros: Closes early and not open for lunch! Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

A five star restaurant without the 5 star price 10/7/2008

My husband and I love going to Scutra's. Other friends of ours do as well. It's a 5 star restaurant without the 5 star price. Each time we've gone there, the dishes have been incredible. The wait staff is courteous and nice, the hostess is very professional, and the chef is friendly and a master of his cuisine. Mr. Baugniet is a 5-star trained chef with just as much talent as other famous chefs, but without the clamor and glamor of MIng Tsai or Michael Schlow. The ambiance is pleasant and contemporary, and it's quiet enough for conversation. Did I mention that they have a REAL cappuccino machine? The fish is so fresh it swims! The pesto sauce mussels are to die for. The tempura shrimp with a light wasabi sauce is incredible. The salmon is cooked perfectly. The steaks... I'm getting hungry already. \r I would highly recommend this place to anyone who would like to enjoy a gourmet dinner at an affordable price and actually carry a conversation. \r However if you are into Vinny T's or the local burger place, or you feel the need to pay $65 for a main course at l'Espalier in order to enjoy your meal and show off your culinary expertise, well, then, do everyone a favor and don't come here. Pros: Delicious food, quiet, courteous staff, reasonable price, great coffee Cons: off Main street, parking may be a problem, not that cheap more

Never, ever eating at Scutra again. 1/29/2008

Our party of six had mixed reviews of our dining experience (the vegetarian entry had no starch or protien, tilapia disappointing and menu choices slim) but this restaurant is getting a poor review from me because I called the restaurant to share this feedback with the owner and shouted at for almost 10 minutes. Even tho I told him that I personally adored my own meal, he ignored my compliments and said that clearly my party ""weren't the type for Scutra"" and would be better off eating elsewhere. Next time we will spend our $200 elsewhere. more

Not really impressed with food. 8/13/2007

After reading others' reviews, I decided to check this calimed gem out. The atmosphere and service was great, but the food wasn't really impressive. Someone mentioned the food here beat Flora, also in Arlington. I disagree. I've been to Flora a few times and everytime had no complaints about the food, which is always a good reason to keep going. Scutra, I wouldn't go back. The food was pretty average. The appetizers were good. We had soft shell crab and mussels, but the entrees were a disappointment. I had the Hawaiin Seabass, wasn't good. My friend had steak and it was okay only. The food also didn't seem to render French/Belgian. Overall, I didn't think the food was worth the price. Pros: Nice atmosphere Cons: Not so yummy food. more

Good good, reasonable price 1/28/2007

I'm not sure about calling this French/Belgian--was much more Italian when we were there. But anyway, the food was good but not great. The prices were reasonable and the service good. While the wine list was not extensive, it had many selections available by the glass which I like. As others have said here, reservations on the weekends are a must due to the small size.\r \r All in the all this is the kind of place I wouldn't make a special trip for, but if you're looking for something nice in Arlington I recommend it. more

Don't let the parking lot fool you!!!!! 8/23/2006

I have accidentally driven by this fabulous establishment for the past 2 years without having a clue as to what lies within!!!!! I just left this restaurant and can not believe what I have been missing!!!! Tyrst and Flora have nothing on Scutra!!!!!!!! As a matter of fact they are not even in the same class. The food was fantastic, the waiters fabulous!!! I can't wait to get back. Make sure you make a reservation as seating is tight but well worth the effort. Pros: Almost everything Cons: Not a drop in kind of place, reservations are a must. Adequate wine list but oenophiles will be disappointed more

Good Place To Eat. 8/15/2003

As long as your not real hungry. For the price they charge the portions are small. This is the pnly critical thing I can say. The food is tasty, the service is top notch. It's a small place so be prepared. Make a reservation. The owners went out of thier way to say hello to us and ask us for an opinion. Can't beat that! It's a recommended place to eat. more

A Place With Character and Great Food 2/1/2003

This is an excellent restaurant if you are looking for a nice night out that's not too formal. The food is great and the atmosphere is modern but cozy. The service was excellent, one waitress was handeling the whole restaurant and she did a fantastic job. Their desserts are terrific. It's a great place for small groups, friends, or family. more
