what the heck???? 9/18/2008

really really AWFUL experience....had my hair cut by a perfectly sweet girl who seemed to put it a lot of care and effort into a haircut that looked, when finished, like i had pulled it into a ponytail and hacked it straight across. seriously, my friends though that i had spontaneously just hacked it all off myself. i left with it wet and couldn't tell the full measure of how bad it was till it was dry, so i called back and said i was unhappy with it. the girl who cut it for me was a total sweetheart and offered to redo it and get this...THE OWNER WOULD NOT LET HER. can you believe that? do not get your hair cut here. more

HORRIFYINGLY BAD HAIRCUT 9/17/2008

Not everybody knows how to cut curly hair. IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW, DON'T PRETEND YOU DO TO KEEP MY BUSINESS, DON'T DO IT!!!!! my stylist put a great amount of time and effort and care into a hair cut that looks essentially as if somebody chopped my hair straight across a few inches below the shoulders, giving me the embodiment of the bad stereotype of curly hair cut in a TRIANGLE. Straight lines out and across. All this while assuring me that she was taking only a few inches off (she took 6, 8 with shrinkage) and taking great care and using techniques to avoid the triangle effect. I am not a demanding client. I was trying to help her out with her trial cut and said ""use your artistic license with the layers and angles, just please do not cut more than 3 inches and PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME TRIANGLE HEAD which is EXACTLY WHAT SHE DID. Pros: perfectly friendly Cons: while giving me a haircut whose first response by peers was ""oh gosh, can they fix it?"" more

shockingly bad haircut 5/17/2007

I went to Salon Luna to the ""short haircut"" guy because I wanted to have my long hair cut very short. The cut I got did not suit me at all, and was not what we had talked about. I tried styling it different ways, but eventually went back to have it fixed. It looked a little better, but the cut is noticeably uneven. I didn't feel that the stylist was really focussing on what he was doing. I would like to find a hairdresser who treats this job as an art and who is confident in his or her ablilities. Pros: lovely salon, free tea/coffee and snacks Cons: the haircut more

Love Salon Luna! 2/26/2007

Everyone is very nice and accommodating. Tony, the owner, is also a stylist who does a wonderful job. He really listens to what you want and is great. You can tell that the people who work here are really happy -- everyone is always smiling or laughing. The place is nice looking and the stylists/colorists are professionals yet there is a great, easygoing vibe. As other reviewers have said, there is no attitude or ego. They are also so sweet at the front desk. Everyone wants to make sure you have beautiful hair and are happy with your results. So glad to have Salon Luna in my neighborhood! Pros: Professional, nice decor, open Monday, accommodating more

Fantastic--I actually look forward to my appointments 2/25/2007

I've been going to Salon Luna for almost a year now, and I'm so glad I gave it that first try. First of all, everyone--from the receptionist to the stylists to the owner--is SO nice; there is not an ounce of snobbery in this place. It's also so cute, it has a great view of Porter Square and the rooms are painted different bright colors, it makes you feel like you're somewhere warm even in the dead of winter. The first time I went the salon owner, Tony, cut my hair and did a great job, I loved it. He also knew it was my first time there and made such a point of saying that if I'm ever not happy with a cut just to call in and they'd fix it free of charge. He also not only said it was alright, but actually encouraged me to try a few stylists if I wanted, something that I think can be really uncomfortable at a salon because you know you'll see a stylist you switched from and you don't want to be in that situation. Tony said that people do that all the time, and that no one at the salon takes it personally. The next time I went in, I went to Matt (who I've been going to regularly since) just because he was available sooner and I needed to get in quick (which, PS, has never been an issue since, you can always get an appointment within a few days, if not the same day). Tony made it a point to come by and say Hello to me. And Matt is AWESOME. He's super funky and cool and really nice, so easy to talk to, and my cut is always exactly what I want. Because I change my hairstyle slightly pretty much each time, sometimes I ask him for input, and he always gives it confidently and honestly, and it always looks fantastic. The man is good. Oh, and his chair is by the biggest window and has the best view, which is an added perk. I highly, highly recommend Salon Luna, it is a fantasic salon that could easily be super expensive and have egomaniacal stylists, but luckily its atmosphere is the exact opposite of that. And they have brownies and tea. Enough said. Pros: Incredibly welcoming atmosphere and people, very skilled stylists, affordable, and just plain fun to go to Cons: Absolutely none more

Great cut, great atmosphere! 11/27/2006

Matt is great for cuts! My hair is long, and I always ask the stylist to cut off 1/2 inch so it will continue to grow long, and Matt has been the only one who actually promised he would cut that amount, and stuck to it! Plus, they use Bumble and Bumble which are the best products. The atmosphere is so cute too! more

Very Professional 11/22/2006

I got a haircut here and I hated it...I called the salon and they were so nice, they scheduled a new appointment for me to come in and they fixed it, free of charge. They didn't make me feel bad about it either, they were totally nice. Now I will definitely keep going back...the space is cute, they give you coffee and tea and they have chocolates there too! Plus, I know if I don't like something they will be very nice and help me change it. Pros: ambience, convenience (close to Porter Square T) more

Proceed with caution 9/16/2006

I tried Salon Luna after reading the reviews. THe receptionist convinced me to see a new stylist to the Salon so I obliged but I should have asked for the most popular stylist or one that received rave reviews every time. THe new stylist was young and seemed somewhat inexperienced. She actually cut the back of my hair straight instead of sectioning it off like every other stylist I've ever had did. She also repeatedly kept asking me if it looked good, if it was okay. Her lack of confidence in doing my hair made me really nervous. Not the best experience...however she did do a great job on my color. Overall I am not satisfied by I will probably go back to Salon Luna but see a more established stylist. THey do have a great space and people are really nice overall. Pros: Great location, hip salon, overall great vibe Cons: bad haircut...uneven and not what I wanted more

Good experience 4/10/2006

I've been trying to find a hair salon in Cambridge/Boston that I really like and I think I finally have! They did a great job with my highlights (I got many compliments) and cut. The atmosphere especially is fantastic, very comfortable and I loved the people. Matthew did my hair and he was very good. The cut prices are very reasonable, although they just raised their highlight prices but it is still definitely cheaper than a lot of fancy-schmancy places around town who do just an okay job. more

Love it Love it Love it 3/7/2006

I love this place. First off, it is beautiful, looks out over porter with great big windows. I have been going there for almost 2years. My stylist Heather gives me the perfect blonde......worth every penny. Pros: perfect color, everyone is so nice Cons: NONE!!!! more

Pay attention 1/12/2006

I looked up my stylist's salon for the phone number to make an appointment...and found this site and these so called reviews for Salon Luna. It takes more than one visit and alot of communication with your stylist to determine what cut/color/style is for you! I saw one girl for a couple of years for cuts and then got scheduled with Tony because my girl was unavailable. The endless string of compliments changed how I felt about myself...I was repeatedly told I looked much younger and my confidence soared. YOU must be clear when you tell your stylist what you want. It's all about interpretation. For the individual who was appalled that she was asked to remove her shirt for the cut: A.) there's a room you go into for that, dufus....B.) It's preferred to do a better cutting job and to protect YOUR clothing from sharp shears. more

WORST CUT EVER 11/21/2005

Salon Luna was the worst experience I ever had with a salon. I was charged $40 and left me with an uneven cut (literally, an inch longer on one side than the other!), uneven layering, and 1/2"" poofs where ""long angled bangs"" were requested. I didn't realize quite how drastic the damage was because my hair was not even properly blow it out! Once I styled my own hair I found how uneven it actually was. The head stylist offered to fix it, but the chop-job that he performed was little repair to the damage. I am left with thinned out hair where my admittedly gorgeous locks once were. I am disgusted at the lack of expertise at such a seemlingly nice salon. All I can do is wait it out till it grows back, and never ever walk through Salon Luna's door again. I suggest you do the same. Cons: Terrible Cut more

Can't find better 10/17/2005

I've been going to Salon Luna for 6 years. My stylist is creative and is great with colors/highlights etc. When I moved miles away from Cambridge, I tried to find an equivalent place both locally and in downtown Boston. After a couple of near disasters, I went back to Salon Luna and was again completely satisfied. A relaxed, professional salon for both men and women. Pros: experienced sylists, good colorists, friendly atmosph more

Nice stylists, relaxed ambience, pleasant staff 8/12/2005

I searched for a place like this for years before finding Salon Luna. I've only gone to one stylist but I think she's great. I've been going there regularly for over a year now. The staff is very pleasant and the ambience is hip but not pretentious. Parking is not great but I usually take the bus. Pros: staff, atmosphere Cons: parking more

I loved it, and I wouldn't go anywhere else. I've tried many places around Boston (I've lived here ten years now) and I have never found someplace as satisfying as this one. Its great and the people are wonderful and cheerful. more

Finally a real hair dresser 3/10/2003

After trying far too many places since I moved to town it was a pleasure finally being in salon as you expect: from the small thing like the free coffee when you arrive to the all important fact that the stylist actually asked, listened, and corrected until it was as expected. I am expressed and for once I actually look forward to come back. Pros: attention more
