Saks Fifth Avenue

Perhaps it should best be compared to a museum. The Saks Fifth Avenue location, on Fifth Avenue, is simply a shrine to handbags. I cannot kid you. I have only purchased a Saks branded tote bag there, as that is all I can afford. Nonetheless, I make sure I stop in there at least once each year to revel in the presence of some of the top designer labels. Fendi, Yves St. Laurent, Gucci, Burberry…they are the bags you see in Vogue and Women’s Wear Daily and just dream of owning. I splurge on some lower end bags, but I head to this museum of purses to check out some of the finest stuff on the market. I did buy a wristlet at Saks once, so does that count as a purse? Seriously, this store is a must for a person who admires good workmanship. Saks is absolutely mobbed during the holiday season, but if you happen to be in Manhattan at any other time, it is worth a look. Sometimes I love Saks, sometimes I don't. For example, I love the Women's Lounge on the 5th floor but avoid the one on the 2nd (I think it is the 2nd...maybe the 3rd) like the plague. Sometimes the staff is helpful. Sometimes a staff member is so snotty and condescending to me that it makes me want to cry. But I don't cry - I just hope they work on commission and give my purchases to another salesperson. I was disappointed to no longer find Lilly Pulitzer clothing at Saks...did they just move the merchandise to a spot I missed? The shoe department LACKS compared to other department stores in the city, but at least you can find a salesperson. Love to have lunch in the restaurant up top, overlooking Rock Center & 5th Avenue. more
