I've had sushi at quite a few places around the twin cities and Saji-ya definitely underwhelmed me. The server didn't show up for 15 minutes after seating, he forgot part of our ...

Real Japanese food! 1/21/2012

Saji-ya has real Japanese food, which is unfortunately uncommon in Midwestern Japanese restaurants. And they do it pretty well. We had flounder and grilled squid. The flounder was quite tasty (albeit not fried like the menu said), and the squid was done just right--tender, and not rubbery. The seasoning was also like what you would find in Japan. The miso soup was good (flavorful with just enough miso), but the salad was more American-style than Japanese (romaine lettuce). We finished up with imagawayaki (like a waffle filled with bean jam). The imagawayaki wasn't as piping hot and crispy as what you'd get on the street in Tokyo, but it was still good. The green tea ice cream on shiso leaves was a nice touch. I was also favorably impressed that they served real plum wine (Choya) rather than the plum-flavored white wine that seems to be favored in these parts. The traditional menu had many items you don't see in Midwestern Japanese restaurants such as hijiki (black seaweed) and kimpira gobo (burdock root). They must be expecting Japanese customers (or people who know Japanese food) on a regular basis. The decor and ambiance were also interesting. They chose tasteful decorations and designs that would remind you that you were in a Japanese restaurant (e.g., a mosaic with koi and a sea turtle), but didn't try to make you feel like you were in Japan. The music was a little loud, but it didn't intrude on conversation too much. Overall, a very good experience and recommended to people who want real Japanese food (not just sushi). more

A Taste Of Japan 10/7/2009

I have been going to many different Japanese restaurants in the twin Cities since the early 90's and there is one that has worked hard to recreate itself from 1990's and that is Saji-ya. I went for the Teppanyaki and stayed for the sushi. The teppanyaki was a fun show and generous portions for the price, I thought. We thought we would have some fun and try some Sushi. My server suggested the Super Saji roll and the Spicy Tuna roll along with a small assortment of other sushi. It was some of the freshest sushi I have had in the Twin Cities. We had such a wonderful time. I have recommended Saji-ya to many of my friends. more

Going Downhill 1/29/2009

This used to be a top-notch restaurant, but seems to be going downhill. We ate on a TH night, had slow and very unattentive service (had to search the waiter out for drink refills, 2 orders were forgotten), and the sushi was just so-so. more

the most awful sushi I have ever had 12/4/2008

I have lived in LA, NYC, Miami, and Mpls. I'd have to say the quality and variety of Mpls restaurants is still comparable to other large cities. Last night I went to Sajiya and was sorely disappointed by the abject quality of the food. Granted we attended the happy hour for a ""taster"" and left with the most awful taste in my mouth. I could have gotten better sashimi at Whole Foods. I ordered a bowl of rice, which I specifically asked for ""japanese sushi rice"" and got a dry pile of jasmine rice that I was charged $2.50 for! It was a very cold day so my finace ordered a bowl of Udon Noodle soup and what came out was a bland bowl of mystery-flavored broth. We couldn't tell *what* flavor the broth was - certainly nothing we've ever had before and we know what authentic Japanese is. And just to for a last twist of the knife in our side, the saki did nothing but augment the foul, fishy sashimi taste with a tart, vinegary aftertaste. \r \r We've been exploring japanese restaurants in the twin cities and Origami remains to have the best quality and their happy hour still is the best combination of quality and price. Saji-ya seemed like a fun local hangout, but stay away from the food! Pros: Nice social hangout Cons: Stay away from the food more

Terribly Slow service 11/30/2008

My daughter and I went to Saji Ya on a Sunday night. We were promptly seated but we only got our server after 15 minutes. We already knew what we were going to order but the time it took for us to finally give it was way too long to wait. Once we placed our order it took half an hour to get our food which was unacceptable because there were only 14 people in the restaurant. Once we had finished eating and had asked for our bill it took 15 minutes to finally get our bill. The food is pretty good but the service is terrible. Pros: good food Cons: bad service more

Best in Town 10/26/2008

I have been to many Japanese restaurants in the Twin cities and this is by far the best. The food is really, really, good. The service is also great. They have very unique rolls which are very yummy. My favorite one is the incredible hulk roll. I would recommend going nowhere else but Sajiya for Japanese food. more

So So 9/19/2008

I have eaten at my sushi restuarants in the midwest area and Saji-Ya is alright. If you are craving a quick bite of sushi this would be the place to go. But if you are looking for some really good sushi there is koyi sushi, Origami, Blue Martini and Fujya. I would have to say that those are the best sushi in MN. more

Slow service -OK Sushi 5/25/2008

As Sushi goes the food was decent, the decor was nice, and also a nice location with parking, but the service was not only incredibly slow but they did not get the order correct. It was not very busy and it still took about 45 minutes for them to get our Sushi. If speed and accuracy of service would improve this could be an above average Sushi establishment. It was on a Sunday evening and I would have given them the benefit of the doubt on slowness had it not been for all the other reviews commenting on slow service. Pros: Location, Decor Cons: Slow / Poor service more

Excellent sushi 5/19/2008

Just went here for dinner last night and had a great experience. The service wasn't exactly the greatest, and had I been on a schedule vs. a leisure Sunday evening, it may have been a problem. Our server was a very sweet girl who understood the menu well. So to recap on the service: not abysmal, not spectacular; nothing worth writing as much as I already have. \r \r To name a few, I've had sushi at Chino Latino, Origami, Benihana's. The sushi here was so amazing, and wins out on all past experiences. I am still craving it and have been sitting on the fence all afternoon on whether to get some more for dinner take-out tonight. Some of the rolls are pretty pricey, but when you are eating them and the plate is suddenly empty, you dismiss the prices and order more anyways. We had the salmon sashimi, the spicy tuna roll, the number 9 roll, the king crab sashimi, and the crunchy roll. The king crab was probably my least favorite, but all the rolls were so good. We also got the ginger chicken wings and the egg rolls. Both were very good, but their sushi is where it's had. I'm so glad to know I have a top sushi place in my neighborhood so I don't have to keep driving to Minneapolis when I need a fix. Pros: Sushi sushi sushi! Cons: now that I think of it, our table was sticky, too more

seaweed like plastic 2/24/2008

-SLOW yet casual service\r -Seaweed on the sushi like a rubber tire\r -Overcooked everything\r -Are Sunday's baby night??\r -Dirty, bad lighting and crammed together like you are sitting on an airplane... Pros: One nice glass of wine Cons: Most everything more

What a great place! 9/14/2007

I've been here a few times now and have never been disappointed. The drinks are really fabulous, although a bit expensive. The food is great - the sushi is fresh and artfully made. Saji Ya has a nice patio for the summer, nice ambiance inside and plenty of free parking. I am looking forward to going back! Pros: Food, parking, ambiance Cons: expensive drinks (but isn't that true everywhere?) more

I could eat their food everyday! 6/28/2007

I love Saji Ya! I wish i could afford eating sushi more often. The staff was really nice. When i didn't understand a few of the dishes, they were really helpful. I've had sushi lots of other places and rate SajiYa at the top witha few others. You have to try their caterpillar, crunchy roll and the Yaki Niku appetizer - too die for! more

Great service. 4/13/2007

Managers obviously don't care 12/14/2006

We chose Saji-Ya to take our out of town guests to for a fun, unique dining experience. The experience was anything but that. We were seated right away when we arrived prompty for our reservation, but service just tumbled downhill from there. Our server was either brand new or the management just doesn't care about training it's staff properly, as she guessed when we had questions about the menu and we had to go out of our way to get what we needed for our table. Shouldn't the server take care of that? We were also disappointed to learn that they had run out of tai (red snapper.) How can a sushi restaurant run out of a popular fish at 8 on a Saturday? We would have ordered more sushi (even though it was very sub-par) and dessert, but all our dishes were cleared and the bill brought to the table before we were asked (or had the opportunity to ask) for anything else. We decided to spend our dessert and drink money down the road at Cafe Latte instead, which was the much better choice in the end. Through the Saji-Ya website I wrote to the management about our experience, but now it's several weeks later and I still haven't received an apology for the disappointing service. It's obvious that Saji-Ya cares nothing about restaurant hospitality and customer service. Pros: Convenient location Cons: Poor service, management apathy, mediocre food more

Decent food and terrible service 11/21/2006

We were seated promptly, but the serivce went down from there. Our server did not know the menu when we asked questions. We constetntly had to ask for refills of tea and water. Our dishes were cleared after a first round, without asking if we would like more. The check was brought before we were asked about desert. The food was ok, but not worth it because of the service. Pros: Food is ok Cons: Serivce more

Great Sushi and Service 11/29/2005

I have always had a good experience at Saji-Ya. On a recent visit, we had Malo as our server and he was awesome! Very attentive and friendly! Food is always wonderful! I highly recommend this restaurant if you're in the area. Only thing I would change is the atmosphere, like the decor but it lacks something since the remodel....not very intimate. Pros: Sushi, Service, Food Cons: Ambiance more

Fantastic Teppanyaki 11/28/2005

Group of 20 went there day before Thanksgiving. All sat next to each other, 10 to a table, upstairs at the teppanyaki tables. Chef was great and good personality. Food was the best. Service was average due to waitress having to go downstairs all the time. Price is comparable to Ichiban's and Benihanna's. Worth every penny. Parking a pain if on a busy night. Small bar area not impressive Pros: Teppanyaki food, Beer selection, Teppanyaki chef Cons: Parking, Bar area more

I really love this place 11/25/2005

My husband and baby go to this restaurant montly. We recommend the grilled beef dishes and the sushi. We are not teppanyaki food fans so we cannot recommend what we are not into. The portions of the bento boxes are generous for a Japanese restaurant which is saying alot compared to the other Japanese restaurants in the area. The atmosphere is wonderful our daughter loves the place and she is only 16 months old. I love the staff as well always welcoming and accomodating. I hope this place does not change. Pros: great food, good staff, Awesome tempura Cons: busy more

A Japanese Delight 7/23/2004

The food was simply amazing. I ordered the sashimi appetizer with a steak bento. The service was average. The best night to go is Saturday night. For some reason the food tastes so much better, especially from the kitchen. I believe the two cooks on staff was an elderly Japanese woman and a young asian man. Pros: Saturday night cooks, Great tasting food, Good ambience more

Good food, but too noisy 5/9/2004

The food and service were good, but the noise level was so high we couldn't hear the couple across the table and we eventually gave up trying to converse at all. I would not recommend this resturant if conversation is on your menu. Pros: food more
