Gotta love being able to eat from the Slanted Door kitchen at a fraction of the price of the full-service restaurant. Its certainly busy during lunch time, but you just order at ...

My god, where do I start. This was probably the most pretentious restaurant I have visited in 10 years. A friend and i were seated by an unexpressive waiter wearing black eyelin...

The Slanted Door 8/23/2006

http://slanteddoor.com/ Always packed with people during lunch and dinner. You should always make reservation for this place. Cool decor. Yellow tail (appetizer) is always good, small portion for the price though. I am a big fan of their grilled pork over rice noodle. very tasty. Service is always good at this place. Conclusion: over priced Vietnamese food. more

Slanted Door 5/6/2006

Back in the day, Slanted Door was a slightly over-trendy restaurant in our neighborhood. Then, one day, they papered over the windows and put up a sign that said closed for renovations. Instead of opening up in the same place, they got some famous architect to design them a humdinger of a space over at the Ferry Building. Now, the much bigger, much trendier, more expensive than it used to be Slanted Door serves up its nouveau Vietnamese cuisine that's just as good as the original. Things I love there: anything ahi tuna, lemon grass tofu, spring rolls… though even as great as they are, still not as good as the cheapies over at Tu Lan. more

Lost its soul, but gained a lounge! 4/29/2006

My wife and can't say we're regulars at The Slanted Door anymore, but back in the day when they were located at 16th and Valencia and we were living in the Lower Haight, we made sure that we popped in every month or so for excellent food, amazing chocolate cake and a well thought out selection of tea. That was back in the 1990s, and this is now 2006. It's been a long time since we first experienced the shaken beef, served by dedicated staff that recognized familiar faces and treated you like you were practically one of the family. Over a decade since our first taste of the food, the restaurant has moved twice and undergone changes that in some ways are great, but overall leave me wishing that they were still a little known restaurant in the Mission. Since we have moved back to town, we've been there once for dinner and a couple of times for drinks, most recently this evening. Though the new space is sleek with an expanded lounge area - it lacks the warmth and personal touches that could make it great. Even the staff seemed to shlub along through the crowd in ill fitting, slightly faded Slanted Door black t-shirts. The DJ and cocktail selection are nice, but don't really fit the vibe of the restaurant area. It tries to be hip and unique, but ends up being generic and a little cliche. Well prepared drinks are brought out at a painfully slow pace, making it difficult to enjoy yourself while trying to flag down a server and time your order to when you might finish your drink in order to avoid a lengthy in-between-drink gap. All of this, and you end up paying about ten dollars per cocktail when tax and tip are figured in. If the service in the bar can't be fixed, then it would be better just to abandon it, rather than tainting the overall experience. Call me crazy, but when I miss the food, I'll head to Out The Door and have some takeout. more

slanted door 3/17/2006

this restaurant is beautiful and beautifully located but a bit on the pricey side. everyone raves about this restaurant but seriously seems vietnamese food is cheaper and better at hole in the walls. but so many reviews have come back good on this place that i think i'll try it again after some time has past. more

Great food; pricy 11/17/2005

Overall value was lower than expectations but the view made up for it. If you want a swanky and spendy place down by the ferry building, this is it. Very creative menu and delicios fresh food. Definitely make a reservation although walk ins are welcome and can be taken on weekends. more

It's good 9/23/2005

But you could eat vietnamese for a month on Larkin for what you pay for one night here! I like the crepes but the waitress was rude The drinks are tasty but the wine list need improvement. I thnk I will never go back. I think thought that you shoud tyr it to wee why wveryone eklse likes it. more

Outstanding Vietnamese Food 8/20/2005

This restaurant really does live up to it's reputation serving excellent Vietnamese food. Everything is fresh and well prepared. The bar serves up some unique cocktails and the overall service is top notch. I miss the original location in the Mission. If I had to nitpick, the new location is new and modern, but a bit cold. Still well worth the wait and expense. Be sure to get plenty of appetizers and share so you can sample more of the menu. more

Heavenly 8/11/2005

By far one of the best restaurants in San Francisco, Slanted Door is a a refreshing step in the right direction to Vietnamese Food. There is no pho, but rather a twist on the normal Viet meals. Try their house spring rolls. Don't forget to have on their specialty drinks. The decor is beautiful, if you are lucky, you can get a seat overlooking the Bay. The staff is very friendly. They have great desserts to choose from. This is one place everyone who comes to the city needs to experience! I recommend calling way in advance for reservations. I waited two months! more

Vietnamese food with a twist 9/20/2004

Though I prefered the first location (in the Mission), you really cannot deny how good this food is- especially the claypot fish and the shaken beef. These two dishes along with a delish lemongrass tofu are worth the trip. For your basic spring rolls and noodle dishes you can eat more cheaply at Sunflower back in the mission! more
