BOSTONS BEST 7/13/2010

The food at rocca is to die for and you always want more! The service is great and the chef and owner are very nice too. The aps. were all great with my favorate one bein the summer melon plate it had three types of melon which were all so good and fresh and it had a really nie cheese with it. For my main dish i fot the three hour (or three day i cant remember the exact name) it was cooked very nicely and the potatos that came with it were so good. Rocca is a place you should try. Pros: EVERYTHING more

Good time @ Rocca 3/11/2010

I normally only go to Rocca on the nights when they have the gay parties, but I ended up here with a few co-workers on a Wednesday night and had a great time. We sat at the bar and had a few drinks. I ordered the margherita pizza with eggplant, which was delicious. Definitely not something you can fill up on, but it was a decent size and very light. I loved being here on a Wed. It was not busy, but great atmosphere, and the people at the bar were very friendly. Also Rob the bartender took great care of us! more

Overrated 1/13/2010

Rocca used to be cool back when it was new and hip, and everyone wanted to check out the space.. The time has long gone and the place is operating on smoke and mirrors. Drinks are terribly overpriced and meal service is also overpriced for the quality or I should say inconsistency of the food. The turnover in staff hasnt helped. Pros: Location (huge parking lot) and nice decor Cons: Drinks, Food more

Bad service, bad drinks 11/8/2009

I went to Rocca on Friday night with a few friends for drinks. We got there around 10:30 and the place was pretty packed. Unfortunately there was only dedicated bar attender to serve the big crowed. It was an arduous process to order a drink. The staff acted like they were paying me to go through all that trouble to get a drink. When it came out, the glasses were over flowing, dripping everywhere. The bar attender didn?t even bother wiping it off or at least putting the glass on a napkin. The drinks were of subpar quality. Pros: Bad service, bad drinks Cons: Decent d?cor more

Good meal, good waiter, uncommonly spacious and open for Boston. 3/9/2009

Visited Rocca for the first time on Sunday night and had a very good experience. Slightly off the beaten path, this is a really cool, modern, very open restaurant and bar. Need a place where your suburbanite friends can park their SUVs and not be uptight about sitting on top of strangers at another cramped Boston restaurant? Bring them here. Pros: Spacious feel, Good food, Good waiter Cons: Rambunctious Bar Scene, Disappointing dessert more

Is the parking worth it? 3/8/2009

I recently went to Rocca for a friends' celebration dinner. We had a price fixed, 4 course dinner, and when the waitress came by to ask if we wanted red or white wine, I assumed this was included in the cost. I was driving (excellent parking) so I did not partake, but the rest of the table did. 6 bottles of wine later, our bill came to $1500. Apparently when the reservation was made we were told that we could only have the table for 2.5 hours. 2.5 Hours for 4 courses? really? The staff was great and attentive, but the deserts were not out in the alloted time and we went over, which was clearly not our faults. While we were paying the $1500 bill, the owners/managers were coming over and ""jokingly"" reminding us that we were over our time and there were people waiting downstairs. While they were trying to be lighthearted, we got their strongly made point. I've never regretted spending money more. For the amount we spent, they should have 1. thrown in a couple of those bottomless bottles of wine, and 2. Let us sit there for as long as we wanted. They should have just been happy in this economy that there were people there and willing to spend money. There are plenty of empy restaurants out there...The food is OK, and the wines by the glass were reasonably priced when I looked at the list in the lounge downstairs. The waitstaff were great. I haven't been to Rocca other than this event, but I don't know that I would would go back. The food was good, but the end of the evening left a bad taste in my mouth. Pros: parking, reasonably priced wines by the glass Cons: rude manangement/owners not valuing the clients they have more

Great parking....but.... 1/2/2009

Why did we have to ask for bread? Then we had to ask for butter. We were told that the butter was too cold. Where was the waiter? Why was a woman's winter coat sitting on the floor of the ladies restroom? Why was my food not better than what I can make at home? Why did we get nasty looks when we asked for lemons for the uninteresting calamari? Why did we not stick around for desert? Pros: Parking Cons: Service more

Joey rocks! 11/22/2008

Last week there was an eating out incentive called Appetite Stimulus something...I agreed to meet my friends for dinner at Rocca - first time there for me...certainly not the last. Pros: Great food, even better service. Cons: Bartender should have a barback or server assistant. more

I would love to come back 9/14/2008

Let me start off by saying that we had our dining experience at the upstairs bar. We walked in around 8:30 and were immediately seated upstairs at the bar. The host was such a nice guy. The bartender was fantastic. The food was amazing. We started off with the marinated olives and the polenta. Very delicious. Can the bread get any better? My pasta dish was really small and really not worth the price. It was delicious but there was hardly anything to it. Get the baked rigatoni. That's a full meal and it's really good! The place has a great vibe. It's a bit loud in there but everything else is great. Pros: Great food, ambience Cons: Small pasta dish, loud music more

It's great, but..... 8/9/2008

Well let me start by saying I went to Rocca on a Tuesday night around 9pm with reservations. I went to Rocca b/c my friend and I saw an episode of Phantom Gourmet and thought this restaurant would be nice for a birthday celebration. Pros: good food, nice staff, FREE PARKING Cons: slow service @ times, prices doesn't agree with portions more

Right on Rocca 7/16/2008

I attended a birthday dinner for a very good friend tonight. We had a wonderful time. When my partner and I arrived about 7 minutes prior to reservation time, the hostess nicely showed us to the space for the party. The waiter seemed uncertain about what he should do with us before the host and the birthday boy arrived. Once others arrived be began taking drink orders and settled into a nice routine. All the cocktails were excellent and well prepared. We sampled a wide variety of appetizers, entrees and desserts. The sliders were very popular, the fried cauliflour was tasty, the olives were quickly polished off. The only item that was even questionable was the sunflower bread with eggplant caviar. It was not bad and not wonderful. Some ordered steaks, some ordered pastas, some ordered chicken or pizza. Everyone seemed very happy with their food. The polenta was ordered as a side and was fabulous. I like good polenta a lot and can't stand it when it's bad. This was VERY good. For dessert we ordered a number of sorbet sundaes and almond bark with chocolate. All those items were very good, too. The dessert for the birthday boy came out with a candle and we all sang to him with the waiter leading us. This was a very nice evening and I would return at almost any time. One final note; I am a vegetarian and there were plenty of items for me to eat. Pros: Beautiful interior Cons: Surrounding neighborhood needs improvement more

Stay Away - bad food 6/29/2008

Went to Rocca on a Saturday night with another couple. We had an 8:45pm reservation and were not seated until 9:50! Normally this is forgivable if they provide good service and good for, however not so much. The apps were good (calamari and muscles) so things started off well, but then went down hill from there. My girlfriend said her pasta honestly tasted like it came from a can, my friend?s octopus was so overcooked she needed to take a sip of water after every bite just to get it down. the final 2 entrees were both the hangar steak which was tasty, but was like chewing on a piece of rubber.... this is when it got interesting! We very nicely voiced our displeasure with the waiter. And instead of apologizing like they normally would, he didn?t say a word! He just quickly and quietly cleared our plates and walked away.. Then moments later he passed by the table and just flung the check onto the table! Normally I am not one to complain but that got my steamed, so I went and asked to speak to a manager?. The Manager apologized, gave us a discount off the bill and then unprofessionally told us she just fired the waiter.. Which we all know didn?t happen. Pros: Ambience Cons: food, service more

Horrible food and service 5/19/2008

I am from Boston, and went to Rocca with a group of 7 (all 26-33 years old) for a friends Birthday at 10PM on a Saturday night and did not have a good experience. The service was horrible, they ran out of bread so we didn't have any, and they also ran out of broccoli rabe. 3 people ordered the hanger steak, and the other 4 ordered the swordfish. When our entrees arrived, the steaks were luke warm/cold. The people that ordered the swordfish said it was not very good either. It's too bad, because it's a nice restaurant, with a pretty good bar and atmosphere. The only positive part of our evening was the free parking, but I will never eat at Rocca again, and recommend you choose somewhere else also! Pros: Free Parking Cons: Bad Service, Cold Food, Ran out of food items (bread, broccoli) more

We are definately going again!!! 5/9/2008

My wife and I went here last night for her birthday. It was great. The atmosphere is lively and upbeat. Our server enjoyed describing each dish almost as much as much as we enjoyed eating them. With so many options in the South End, we rarely revisit a restaurant but this time we will be back!!! more

Hold the Pickles hold the lettce - 3/21/2008

Horrible service- incompetent bar staff - unfriendly- note to the staff: If you hate working in a restaurant go do someting else. Rolling your eyes and making negative comments about other customers is puerile and unprofessional. If you are not happy with the South End clientel then take a job where your interaction is asking if you want to ""superSize"" that. You will make everyone more happy! Pros: free parking Cons: see the comments more

Poor customer service!! 1/14/2008

LAst weekend was my first experience at Rocca. After seeing it on the Phantom Gourmet, I was very excited to eat there! I planned a night out with my girlfriends and Rocca was the beginning of our Boston adventure. April, who was very accomodating, sat us in the lounge, making it a perfect atmosphere for my girlfriends and I! A server came over to our table immediately and gave advice on their specialites. I thought she was going to be great!! My predictions were unfortunately way off!! When my girlfriends asked to have seperate checks( 8 girls on one check and 8 girls on the other check) she said, ""the kitchen will get all confused if I do it like that! So I will have to divide it at the end"" That was ok with all of us, there was a large number of us and asking for 2 separate checks, I didnt think was a big deal; especially since we all told her BEFORE we even ordered. ALso, I told the hosteess when I made the reservations 4 days in advance that we would do that. She assured me that that wasnt a problem! While ordering, most of us ordered multiple apps and salads for our entrees. The waitress asked us what our entree was going to be. When someone said, that they were just having the apps for dinner, she sighed loudly and rolled her eyes! She made us feel uncomfortable! Also, it was my girlfriends, bday. We asked the hostess for a cake with a candle in it for dessert. She again said""yes!"" Well everyone's dessert came out and no cake!! ABout 10 minutes later, our waitress came over and dropped 2 scoops of ice cream with no candle and said "" its on the house!"" No happy birthday, candle, or cake!! Well to top it all off, we got the bill! She spilt it, but it was all mixed up! Some people's food on one, and drinks on the other, etc! I always leave extra gratuity other than the one included!! Well this time was the opposite! I wish I could have taken it all back! I was embarrassed by her actions. My 16 girlfriends and I will not be returning. more

Horrible service but great food 1/13/2008

I visited Rocca with a group of 16 for a special night out and was so disappointed. The food was excellent but truly was not appreciated since the service was so horrible. The timing of our food was terrible. Half of our table got their food 20 min before the other half and all food was served at once..appetizers and entrees covered the table. I asked a hostess if they could do something special for someones birthday in our party and she said they would do a small chocolate dessert with a candle. Sounded perfect except they never told the waitress and our birthday guest ordered her own dessert. When I talked to the waitress about it she said ""theres no communication in this restaurant"" and stormed off. 10 minutes later she came from the kitchen with 2 small scoops of ice cream and placed it in front of my guest and said ""this is free!"" more

Sorellina Jr. ..in a good way 11/8/2007

If you want the Sorellina experience without the attitude, then this is the place to come. It is on two levels which makes it seem more intimate. The staff is friendly , cheerful and helpful. When you enter there is a nice bar with some couches..so the whole first impression is one of comfort. The upstairs dining room is spacious and has nice , large windows. The booths are great , and there is a second bar on this floor . The food is broken into different catagories.. tastes, appetizers , pasta and main courses. I went with a large group, so we got to sample a wide array of courses. The pasta was varied and makes a great second course. Main courses were all well prepared, but the whole fish is a standout... and something you rarely see done these days and alone is a reason to come here. The Ligurian seafood stew was also a big surprise. The veal milanese was greasy ( yes ,Sorellina does it better) . Wine list is all Italian , but very affordable with many good bottles. Desserts are quite good...apple crostada was excellent. And to top it all off...there is complimentary parking in a lot right outside. Pros: Great food, friendly staff....and free parking!!!!!!!! more

Not worth the hype - at all. 10/9/2007

I was thoroughly disappointed in my dining experience at Rocca. After checking in at the host stand I headed to the bar to have a drink while waiting for my table to become available. A rude man tapped me on the shoulder and told me I could eat outside now or wait to eat inside. When I asked how long I would have to wait for inside he shot back at me ""however long she told you when you got here."" I let him know that she told me it would be 15 minutes and 10 minutes had already passed. He snapped back ""no, 30."" When I turned to ask my friend if he wanted to wait or not the host grabbed my shoulder and demanded ""outside now or what?"" After letting him know I wanted to discuss the situation with my friend I turned to let him know we would just take the table outside now, only the host was across the restaurant. We chased him down and he brought us to a table outside. Cons: Nasty people working there. more
