Rattan Asian Bistro

My girlfriend and I heard about the wine setup here and thought it would be nice to do some tastings and grab a bite to eat. We went arount 8 pm. There were quite a few people eating and we liked the decor. Since we knew we were going to do quite a few small tastings we thought it best to sit at bar. Too our surprise the bar was quite small and only sits maybe 6 people. We ordered a salad, the skewers, and some pot stickers then started ordering some one and two ounce tastings. Our bartender/server was not very personable, never smiled all night and seemed a bit put out by our small pours. The wines were fresh and the selection not bad but we felt the whites were served a little too cold. The salad and pot stickers were very good. The skewers were'nt bad but were so heavenly marinated that it was hard to tell the difference between the pork, chicken, beef, and lamb. Around 9:15 the place pretty much cleared out and the entire staff went into close mode(they close at 10) - bartender disappeared, every one was scrubbing and mopping floors - and they were using fantastico - which is very strong and completely through the rest of our tastings off. They should really be carefull about this is someone is drinking wine. We will definately come do another tasting and try a few more menu items but we will make sure its well b4 closing time. Hopefull our server will be a bit friendlier. more

The decor is great, lot's of great things to try on the menu and an ever revolving daily special. The owner is a great guy and really tries to perfect every aspect of the restaurant... Of special note is the progressive wine list and wine prices which are the best we have found outside the loop. Friday evening they have live music which adds some fun and a great way to cap off your week! Our favorite dish is the Miso Glazed Sea Bass, worth the trip all by itself. The food was decent, however I didn't really like the dish I got. It was a the chicken basil noodles that was more like a curry dish. The portions were small for the price, and I just feel like we could have gotten better food at a more authentic Thai restaurant. But the atmosphere was nice! Pros: Good atmosphere Cons: Pricey more

I have visited this restaurant 3 times and everytime has been great. Great atmosphere, and food! The wait staff is also great. I had not eaten sushi in years b/c of a bad experience and Rattan has changed that now! LOVE LOVE IT! Pros: WINE BAR; GREAT FOOD-more than just sushi also! Cons: A little pricey, but worth it. more

My boyfriend and I decided to try this place this last Saturday night. We sat at the bar and Amy was our bartender. This place definitely had the three things needed for a great experience - Great Service, Tasty Food and Wine, and a wonderful atmosphere! They have a wine system in place that allows for a one, two or full glass pour of any wine on their list. Between the two of us, we tasted about twenty wines - they were ALL amazing! Amy was very knowledgeable in explaining the characteristics of each wine we tasted, which added to the experiece. We also loved how the owner was very hands on with all of the guest to make sure that they were taken care of. The food was also amazing! Best homemade potstickers and tuna salad I have ever had. I also love curry, and Amy suggested an off the menu dish that was sensational. They also had a great three piece band that was there for entertainment. the waitress was incredibly courteous and recommended the vietnamese garlic beef which was amazing, and i also tried the bistro roll and the crunchy roll, both of which were awesome.. the creme brulee is seriously delicious too.. the atmosphere is also chic and beautiful, i loved eating there and would definitely go again. this is a good spot for after work.... wine and appetizers. The wine list is the thing to go for and happy hour is the time to go. The food was ok..curry was tasty tho bland, the thai shrimp bland...even the sauce was bland. If you like spicey Thai food this won't do. Sushi was average as well, tho an interesting selection. 2 stars for food, 3 stars for service. 4 for wine, great selection by the glass, ....would have been a 5 except the white wine was not chilled...no excuse for warm white wine in a wine bar !!??!! They did have my favorite Cloudy Bay sauvignon blanc by the glass....tho at $17/glass.... skip the glass and get flight 1 which includes some less expense but still quite fine sauv blanc including the C Bay!!. more

This is a great place for someone who loves Asian food. The menu has a good mix of Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese flavors and influences. We dined on the patio which is nice especially if you are looking for a bit quieter setting away from the music pumping inside. I was pretty impressed with the wine list which is pretty extensive for what I would consider a fairly casual spot given the menu prices which settle mostly in the $8-13 range. I am particularly interested in the wine flights offered and would go back just to enjoy this. We had the Tropical roll (salmon, mango, and more) to start and it was really delicious. My husband who loves won-ton soup and tries it everywhere he can thought the dumplings were tasty (with chicken and shrimp inside) while the broth was so-so. We both ordered specials which we enjoyed, but don't expect special prices to be as "casual" as the regular menu. My husband's short ribs which were well-sized and very flavorful were $23 while my Kobe beef and shrimp skewer accompanied by grilled veggies and a sweet potato puree ran $40. The beef was well marbled and had nice texture, overall really good, but I felt the shrimp, which were huge, were not as flavorful. For dessert we tried their caramelized bananas with cinnamon-sugared won-tons and pineapple ice cream. This was okay, but I am sure delicious for the banana-lover. I think I was more intrigued by the pineapple ice cream of which there was just a modest scoop. We definitely enjoyed the dining experience and our waitress was very attentive. I had heard nothing but good things about Rattan and I was let down slightly. Don't get me wrong, I liked the place, but it was so hyped up by a friend that I expected better. Service was ok. The food was ok not spectacular. Decor is amazing!! WOW what a beautiful and inviting decor. Music was fair. Really the only thing I can say that was truly top notch was the wine list! This absolutely has to rank amoungst the city's best!! Not only was it priced to perfection, but with so many great choices, not just nonsense like so many restaurants do!!! It was almost too good of a list because I couldn't decide what to get because I seen many wines that I loved!! There are around 50 wines by the glass and maybe 200 by the bottle, these were professionally selected thats for sure!! Great job to the person or persons that put that amazing and reader friendly wine list together! We loved it. All in all it was good, not great, but if you like wine..........THIS IS THE PLACE!!
