Editorial review from Citysearch 9/11/2013

So I stopped off here and found a little piece of heaven. The store is dark and the air is filled with the scent of aging books. Would've loved to have bought lots of books from here, but I was kicked out before I got the chance. To my the public, I have a tirade going against the white-haired devilish proprietor/owner of this remarkable store on my page. To any future employers, any of my posts about said @$$face proprietor/owner; though they may have a negative impact on my resume, are justified in my eyes. — at Quarter Price Books. more

Not worth the time to stop by 12/4/2011

I went to this store yesterday to sell back a fairly large collection of books I have in order to make space in my apartment. I entered the store to ask if there was any interest and the guy asked me to explain the type of books I had. I did explain and he said he wanted to see them. At that time a couple came in and he stopped talking with me abruptly and had a 5 minute conversation with the couple while I stood awkwardly by. Then he came out to look at my collection (in my car trunk). He said he was only interested in the Eastern European books I had so I started rummaging around to find them. As I was doing this, he said ""Well, you're obviously not organized"". He then turned to a lady who had just pulled into the parking lot and angrily said ""This guy doesn't want me to look at his books, but says he has a bunch"". She looked confused by his comment. At that point he just walked off back to the store. I got in my car and left. I donated all my books to Goodwill.\r \r Don't bother wasting your time at this place. Rude and reps don't care about customers unless you already know the owner or fit some stereotype. more

Don't listen to these other reviews 11/5/2010

The guys at quarter price books are abrasive but they are not rude. If you think they are rude then you are probably not smart enough to figure out the references they are using. The prices can get out there a little ways but they have the stuff that other places don't carry or don't have the guts to carry. Starting up a conversation with the guys who work there is like talking to an encyclopedia with snide references thrown in. I hate going in this store because i always find something to buy because of the greatly varied selection they have. The other reviewer is correct about the signage they use but goto any second hand bookstore nowadays and they have that. Print media is going away for the most part and have to get your attention somehow. In short, go here if you want to find something interesting to read. more

Rude and not worth your time 9/11/2010

I have shopped at a lot of used book stores around the nation in my days and I always try to get something because I love the people running them and want to see them kept around. Also, while I agree with the fact that the books in this store are over-priced (esp. with the misnomer of a name they have and the ridiculous used car lot type signs out front), just like a great hole in the wall, I'm generally easily willing to pay more for some great atmosphere and friendly service that beats the retail giants. Quarter-priced books had neither of these. Musty books crammed in a disheveled order, but again, even that isn't so bad and a book lover can still love searching for gems in stores like this. The owner, however, is why I'll never return and will advice all my friends (and evidently the internet crowd as well) not to bother in the first place. His rudeness has been discussed in several of these posts and I suspect the ""Great"" reviews are personal friends or long term customers he treats differently. To top it off, he was rude before AND after my girlfriend and I bought a book. (A book we only half wanted, but bought in the first place just because we like to keep these types of stores rolling.) At any rate, we won't be making that mistake again, and I'd advice against anyone reading this to make it in the first place. more

Best Book Shop on the Planet 6/10/2009

Each book has been collected for the serious reader. I have had the pleasure of finding hard sought books at reasonable prices on many occaissions. I live way out of town and I make it to this book shop every chance I get. It takes hours just to peruse the collection and worth every minute. Expect quality books collected by serious book lovers with a consumate variety. Pros: This is the best detailed shop for serious book lovers. Cons: There is only one location. more

Stay away from 1/4 price books. high prices and rude if you don't buy 2/7/2009

I would stay out of this store. 1/4 price books had some appeal to me when I went in, looking for a photoshop book but when I couldn't find it and started to head out... I came across a black and white photography book about 18 years old. They had it priced at $12.00 so I put it back and wished the store owner to have a nice day on my way out. He asked. ""Sir, just out of curiosity, how much would you have paid for that book?"" Since my initial interest was the photoshop book, I didn't really know how to respond but given the age of the book and the name of the store,""1/4 price books"" I replied about half of that which is about $6.00. I didn't even mention to him that for an 18 year old book, that was pretty good in my opinion. Keep in mind, they asked me... I was on my way out without commenting... His reply was ""Were not running a flea market here Sir"". Normally, I think I would have said something... but I think I was just 'suprised' at what he just said... anyway, I left. At least he said ""Sir"", but the tone wasn't very friendly at all. Anyway, I suguest steering clear of this place unless you want to feel pressured into possibly buying a book that might be overpriced for the age of it.\r \r Posted\r more
