Sunday movies night! 3/23/2010

Wow ! New York scene is getting much needed education. Pravda's Silent Movies on Sunday nights . Its unique experience, have a tea, and a chocolate cake with a friend and see some of the Expressionist Horror movies. I saw The Hunted Castle and Faust ... amazing experience... highly recommended!! I was with my girlfriend and we had a treat! Dosvidania ! Pros: Russian Tea, Chocolate Cake, Cocktails, Vodka Cons: Monday :( more

Mediocre Fare with Nice Lighting 3/15/2010

I live in the nabe and passed the place for years before finally going in. The space was attractive, comfortable - its red and brown hues inviting. I went with two friends who drink a lot, so they could not attest to whether the food was worth eating. The waitresses acted like they didn't want to be waitresses, probably not everyone's first choice as a career, and considering the food was no better than Veselka, the prices were high. .. and about the stainless steel toilets. Is anyone except a hard-core S&M fetishist really interested in experiencing life in a gulag? my friends loved the drinks. There are many more interesting places in NYC with much better food. If you want to drink a lot of vodka served by really fed up waitresses, you will be in heaven more

Birthday Dinner 7/5/2009

My friends and I made reservations at Pravda for my best friends 21st Birthday Party. We had a group of about 15 people. The waiter was very patient with us as some people arrived late and she was very attentive. The drinks were delicious, but I'm not sure if $20 a cocktail was worth it. When we got the bill we were surprised that the cocktails were much more expensive than the menu had listed, but regarless we enjoyed ourselves. They allowed us to put our friends birhtday cake in their kitcken and after they brought it out and let her blow-out the candles, they then took it back and brought us each a piece. Other than the pricey drinks, 2 thumbs up. Pros: Interior, Food, Cocktails Cons: Expensive more

Great Cocktails at Pravda 2/24/2009

Perfect classy place to go for cocktails. Different drinks with the finest vodka. Great bartenders that server up the right mix to perfection. Fantastic location. Classsy, upscale decor without the pretentious attitude. Pros: Example: best croissants in town Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Great drinks, bad attitudes 1/26/2009

I had heard so much about Pravda from friends and how great the drinks were, so I was excited to go. I had never been before. I can not stress enough how absolutely rude every hostess was in there. After being booted out of TWO tables (for "VIP"s), we decided to leave. The hostess, who was giving us the stink eye all night, and circling our table like an ugly vulture, actually made us want to leave- even though we weren't even done with our drinks. We were five very nice paying customers.. I just couldn't believe it! So when we were literally WALKING OUT THE DOOR, she pushed me to the wall and said "you need to let people through"... there was no where for me to go! My friend did not have kind words, needless to say. I hope that the owner reconsiders his choices in his help. It's a recession, and I am sure there are other out of work actresses that are prettier and nicer. Pros: Great drinks Cons: Terrible bathrooms, dreadful service more

Amazing martinis, lousy staff attitude 1/24/2009

I love this place and keep going back even though the bartenders and staff aren't the friendliest because I love the martinis. This bar has a nice ambience, 2 levels, better for a small group unless you get a table. The martinis are tasty and strong. They are all voldka and infused with flavors. The Vladimir is fig flavored vodka, sounds strange but is delicious. Pros: martinis, decor Cons: staff attitude more

If you are with more than 1 person... DON'T BOTHER!!!! 1/11/2009

If you are with more than one person don?t bother going here!!!!! I went with a group of 10 people to hang out and it was like being in homeroom! You are NOT ALLOWED TO STAND ANYWHERE, BUT THE BAR. I had a few friends seated at a table who were scolded for not ordering drinks from the waitress, but after 20 minutes no one even came over to take our drink orders! You can not stand anywhere, but at the bar and if you even slightly move into any seating area in the place, this beastly women comes out and completely flips out that you have to stand at the bar! I think her entire job was to yell at people all night. We are all adults there is no reason to be hostile and flat out RUDE to people. The bar was pretty crowded and because there is no where else to go. We were separated from our friends the whole night and reamed out through out the night for standing anywhere, but the bar! It is a complete shame because the place is cozy, they have tons of interesting flavored vodkas and the bartenders were friendly. When we went to say goodbye to our seated friends we were AGAIN reprimanded that there was no standing anywhere, but the bar area. If you didn?t like being told what to do as a kid, this is NOT the spot for you! Pros: Cozy Cons: You can't hang out with a group of people. more

I would rather drink on the curb with a forty in a brown paper bag 1/11/2009

This bar stinks. The waitresses were rude, slow and un-accommodating. I have had drinks in applebees restaurants with more class and atmosphere. Just because you are in the basement of an old NYC building does not mean that you have atmosphere. Blasting bad music while serving overpriced and disappointingly tasteless drinks is not atmosphere. Do not be fooled by any hype, this place gets two thumbs down. Pros: There was no wait to get in and bouncer was nice. Cons: No space, not nice, not convenient, not cool more

Prick-da 11/13/2008

Really bad y'all, really bad. Waited around for atleast 15 minutes before I able to get the dirty blonde waitress's attention. After waiting another 15 minutes with no drinks we decided to leave... I told this to said waitress, and she litterally turned her nose in the air without saying anything, like in some strange movie. The attitude with this primadonna server as well as the total D-bag dreadlocked manager was that of unwarrented pretentious superiority. The guy came up to where we were sitting--where the hostess sat us!--and said in a very deuchy way: "You can't sit at that table, it's reserved." The place was not even close to being full. NOT WORTH THE ATTITUDE... Plenty of other places in the city. If you liked Pravda, however, perhaps you will also like Rainbow Room! Ha. Pros: It's pretty enough--kind of like the oyster bar under Grand Central... Cons: Our dirty blonde servers and the dreadlock manager... and the smell of urine more

Needs some Lysol 2/16/2008

Such a great spot , great drinks, great staff...but one HUGE complaint which will cause me to go elsewhere next time I'm in that area. The entire place reeks of urine. We left wtih headaches from the stench. It's 2 floors and the smell managed to cosume both. If the bathrooms are kept in such poor conditions, I wonder how the kitchens are....its a shame, b/c the place has potential. more

Try the Pravda Press! 1/15/2008

I went to Pravda last night as part of a large group from work. We had a good time: food was good, served quickly, albeit expensive for the sizes (thank you, expense account). We tried just about everything on the menu and most items were quite tasty. The French fries were actually really good. For drinks, I tried the Leninade (vodka/lemon/mint) and the Pravda Press (vodka, ginger ale, bitters and something I forget) - both very good. Most everyone enjoyed there cocktails and we probably ordered every drink they had at least once. Service was attentive - probably due to our size and bill potential. But I'd definitely go back for a fun time. more

I love this Swedish Karlsson vodka!!! 1/13/2008

I visit Pravda once in a while and I have always liked it. But this vodka called Karlsson's from Sweden was not like any other vodka I have ever tasted! Usually I'm not even a big vodkatini fan, but that has certainly changed! Wow.. Thank you! more

Good vodka, good vibe 11/13/2007

Was here this past sat9 and its a pretty good place. I had the chocolate martini which was jus alright. What I really loved was their infused vodka shots, the fig is really yummy!! Highly recommended. Also, the mini burgers and fries are pretty good as well. The decor and the ambiance of the place is not too bad, kinda russian feeling w low lights and reddish paint job on the walls. It can get rather crowded and loud though and the waitresses are hard to get once they bring ur order but it?s a cool place and I would def go back at least to try all the other flavored shots! Pros: Great flavored shots! Cons: Can get rather loud and crowded more

Great martinis and other mixed drinks 3/31/2007

Been there a couple of times, most recently about a month ago. Nice chill place, the decor is very retro. The drinks are great, and expense reflects the location. But it can get really busy at times and becomes a drag when you have to wait 20 minutes to get a drink or can't get a table cause it's so crowded. Pros: Great drinks, nice ambiance Cons: crowded more

Pravda was a lot of fun! 1/1/2007

we had a great time on New Year's at Pravda. a great variety of russian vodka, good food and awesome atmosphere! more

there are far better bars in NY 12/14/2006

I went there on a Sat. night with friends. The decor is ok and music is ok. Is rather relaxed bar. But service is the worst ever, even for NY standards. $17 martini drinks are very overpriced and not good. The barman (specially the blondy with short hair) is not only illmannered and bad tempered, but he would not lower himself to ever talk to his customers. Very bad experience. If the owner made more effort in supervising the employees, maybe would be worth paying a visit. more

Fun place to grab a drink except during peak hours 11/15/2006

Pravda has a great ambiance and serves some good specialty cocktails, though they're a bit expensive. It's a fun place to grab a drink, but best avoided late-night when it becomes quite a scene and overcrowding can make it hard to even get to the bar for a refill. Pros: Drink specials Cons: Overcrowding, high cost more

Nice Ambience, Expensive (but good) Drinks 11/15/2006

Love the low ceilings and the cavernous setting. Drinks are not spectacular but good enough. Though for $13 a pop they should be spectacular..good martinis, good caprioska (but not better then let's say Yuca Bar which has them for $5 at happy hour and $8 otherwise). Vodka infusions are decent (best is chile horseradish) but not nearly as good as in the Russian Vodka Room. Overall the place wins with ambience and a good looking clientele. It also has some good appetizers (caviar eggs, ham croquettes) and a surprisingly great warm chocolate cake with sour cherry compote ($8). Pros: Ambience, Appetizers, Drinks Cons: Prices, Overcrowded on Weekends more

Great Variety in Drinks 11/6/2006

The Russian vibe in here is undeniable and the lounge is filled with some of the trendiest people alive. Ambiance aside, the basement lounge sports some of the most interesting vodka mixes available. Be sure to bring plenty of $$ for your date or group night out. Pros: Drinks, Service Cons: Prices, Crowded more

pravda rocks! 10/21/2006

I had a party there and it was out of control... great spot to share fun times with friends... especially if you like your drinks poured right! more

  • Having fallen from its place on the hot list serves this clandestine underground lounge and its imported-vodka devotees well. Without pressure to impress, its dramatic interior casts a much warmer glow. Moscow mementos and Cyrillic scrawlings are just a stylistic footnote to well-loved leather club chairs, tiny tables and a golden ceiling that arches low. The patrons are no longer model-slammin' gorgeous, but fans and friends still flock. They go to sample Russian vodkas as well as those from Poland, the Ukraine and more than 10 other countries. Here the liquor mixes smoothly with caviar, fat cigars and drinks priced as if rubles grow on trees.
