Florentine Classics Supplemented by Sardinian Specials 3/7/2011

Massimo Al Ponte Vecchio has been one of my favorite places for twenty years. When I lived on Thompson Street I ate there at least once a week. They have classic Florentine dishes and always have delicious specials, with a focus on game. The new chef has brought Sardinian flavors to the menu which is complimented by an assortment of regional wines, Cannoneau, in addition to the outstanding wine list. Had a great bottle of Brunello di Montalcino last week with lamb shank osso bucco style. The ambiance has improved with the renovation of the main room and the deep wood of the expanded bar area. It is a great date place with unpretentious staff and most importantly the food is superb. They are now also featuring live music withh Grammy Award winning Guitarist Hernan Romero. more

A Culinary Delight 3/6/2011

Their menu has a great variety but didn't get to it as the specials were even more amazing.. I had a hefty plate of lobster and seafood pasta. My mouth kept saying yes until my stomach couldn't take in anymore. Their selection of Italian wine is the most interesting ever! Our waiter was very attentive and friendly making you foget you weren't in Italy.. more

Young and Sophisticated 9/9/2010

European style servings. Sophisticated, educated young crowd. This people know what they are doing. If you don't belong don't go there. more

Horrible--Worst service imaginable 6/13/2010

The restaurant manager was extremely rude?refused to serve members of our party who arrived after we did. The waiter said that they were waiting on a ?rush ?and that was the only reason that they could not serve our friends however this seemed highly unlikely as we where the only people in the restaurant and the entire place was EMPTY. The more pronounced bias was to our mixed race party who the manager took great offense to. We stayed and finished our barely edible cuisine?fair is fair if the food was good given the poor service on could at least contend with the attitude; however as the food was as poor at the service it was like adding insult to injury. Prior to leaving we had to call the cops as the fiery restaurant manager became increasing erratic?my suggestion is that if you are looking for great service and good food this is not the place. more

Absymal....just terrible 6/13/2010

I wish you could give a restaurant no stars. I wouldn't treat a threatening rabid animal the way this restaurant dealt with my table and other customers in the restaurant. The food tasted like it was a bit better than Lean Cuisine. Not the quality you would expect from a chef. The owner was contacted because we were kept waiting for close to an hour for our food--he reacted harshly and was very hostile towards us. The police had to be called to prevent him from following our table to another place. Unfortunately, we had to pay for such a shocking meal and horrendous service. In this economy, I wouldn't recommend anyone getting food for a landfill here. Save your money and go any one of the other appealing, friendly neighborhood restaurants. Pros: Nothing Cons: Poor service, lukewarm food= A dreadful restaurant more

Very Good 2/20/2010

Wild boar special was very tasty. Appetizer mussels in their white sauce lacked flavor and seasonings (parsley). Pros: Wild Boar Cons: Mussels in white sauce more

great 12/17/2009

POOR EXCUSE FOR AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT 3/14/2009

Ordered the Gnocchi and Rib-eye Steak special. The portion of the $17.00 Gnocchi would not even fill a baby's plate, and as for the Rib-eye, it must have been Grade D meat. Steak was very poor quality, and the presentation was even worse. The steak was in the middle with french fries, which were supposed to be rosemary fried potatoes, surrounding the steak. After having to tell the waiter that this meal was unacceptable, he informed me that these steaks are the same ones that have been selling for ten years. Zagat and Citysearch need to take a trip back to the restaurant and take their rating stickers off the door immediately. Pros: STAY AWAY Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

Don't waste your money! 1/5/2009

This place looked cool from the outside, but I guess looks really can be deceiving because the food was awful. We started with fried zuchini and the antipasto plate. The zucchini was bland, tasteless and anything but lightly fried (as specified by the menu). We had to ask for a side of sauce simple to ease the pain of consumption. The sauce that we were presented with was watery and just as tasteless as the zucchini. The antipasto was even worse. It was comprised of 3 paper thin slices of italian meat, wilted basil, and a few uneven pieces of cheese that could have come out of the Gristedes clearance dairy case. Pros: Nice location Cons: Terrible food, service more

Great neighborhood Italian Restaurant 12/9/2008

My family was visiting me at NYU and I took them to one of my favorite italian restaurants around washington sq park. Massimo's is awesome...it's delicious, warm, inexpensive. I really like it there. I would suggest this place anytime. Pros: quintessential nyc italian restaurant more

true Italian, good value in the Village 7/1/2008

The owner is really Italian (I heard him complain to someone over the phone about how difficult it was to get something he needed for the restaurant), and so are some of the waiters. The food is very good (try the shaved fennel salad, for instance), and the location is in the heart of the Village. Definitely worth a try. more

Bad customer service 6/28/2008

Massimo al Ponte Vecchio is not a friendly place to eat as the waiters give a bad attitude to its customers. We were asked to leave the restaurant after sitting down for 30 minutes because we made a reservation for 15 people but only 9 shown up. The waiter said they can't serve us because we didn't have the promised people arrived. Cons: Very Bad Customer Service more

Sweet Spot 5/30/2008

Last week our study group came here on the recommendation of a friend. The food was fantastic and the wine was very good. Moreover, the atmosphere is comfortable and the service is super friendly. We enjoyed our meal. Pros: Out door seating more

Re: Tourist Trap 2/28/2008

This person must be crazy... I guess your idea of great Italian food is never ending pasta and bread sticks. Sorry, you're not going to find that here. Massimo is easily one of the best Italian restaurants in the city. I've had some of the best meals of my life here (and I've been to Italy more times than I can remember). I first ate here as a teenager, and I'm now in my 30's. In all these years there hasn't been even one mediocre meal. The buffalo mozzarella, orecchiette with broccoli rabe, pasta fagioli... incredible. This is authentic Italian food... and it's as good as you'll find anywhere. I promise. Pros: Great Italian food, great service, double / half orders more

Great Italian Food & Friendly Atmoshpere 2/1/2008

I went to dinner here with some firends and it was fantastic. They had a great wine selection and we shared a bunch of amazing italian dishes. I thought is was authentic and I really liked the atmosphere. The waitstaff was fantastic and they were very friendly...especially the owner. We had a great meal and a great time. Pros: fantastic italian and atmosphere more

Tourist Trap Number One 6/14/2007

I honestly don't know who goes here. I have passed the place many times and never wanted to eat here. But the other night, we were a large hungry group, it was raining, etc... Pros: location, outdoor seating, lots of room for a large group Cons: bad food, overpriced more

Authentic Italian, great service, reasonable prices, next best thing to dining in Rome 1/26/2007

I've been dining at Massimo for years and it has remained my favorite Italian restaurant in the Village. The secret is authentic Italian and crisp, professional service. I recommend that you skip the menu and ask your waitor for the specials. If available, choose the starter combo that recently included the freshest imported mozzarella, a delicious portobello, and fresh grilled asparagus. If you are into game, recent specials were grilled wild boar and venison. I ordered the venison in wine sauce and the meat melted in my mouth. The pasta choices are also wonderful and will bring back memories of dining in Firenze and Rome. Allow Massimo, the ever-present owner, to choose your wine. He always keeps the price in the range I specify and his selections perfectly complement the food. Food and service like this don't come at Olive Garden prices but you get what you pay for. I find the prices here very reasonable, especially compared to other places in the area. Give it a try and it will become a favorite. Pros: Food, service, menu, specials more

One of my favorites 1/19/2007

My wife and I have dined here many times and are always satisfied with the food, atmosphere, and service. It may not be the best Italian food you have ever tasted, but it is good, especially the Pasta Carbonara. The atmosphere is usually quiet, dim and romantic. The service is impeccable. Everything is reliable enough for us to take guests when they are visiting town. I am not sure what the other reviewers experienced, as the prices are typical for Manhattan. Pros: atmosphere, reliable Cons: very good food, but not outstanding more

great service 12/3/2006

my friend and i dined here on a recent trip to new york. the food was delicious--i especially loved the gnocchi with gorgonzola. we were able to get half portions of the pastas--so between the 2 of us, we sampled a nice bit of the menu. it was a little pricy, but how many restaurants will do 1/2 orders? we had a delightful house wine and the service was impeccable. i will certainly return here on my next visit. more
