Food was fine, and the place is pretty cool, but the waitstaff was slow and pretty clueless. Worst of all was the rude bartender. Ordered a $9 rioja from the WInes by the Glass me...

Try it, but not without a reservation 7/26/2002

I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to try Pipa, but if you live in NYC give it a go. The hostess was condescending and the waiter was somewhat absent and unaccomodating (sure, we made a reservation to sit outside but when I asked to be moved indoors after I heard thunder he didn't even try to make it happen, giving me a blank stare and a shrug when I asked what we would do if it rained). It wasn't horrendously expensive- between the four of us we ordered 4 tapas and a pitcher of sangria, and it came to about $25 per person inclusing the tip. Then again, I don't typically eat a whole lot so the smallish portions may not do it for some. I'd go back just for the mushroom or vegetable flatbread though- they were delicious! Pros: Good food Cons: rude service more

back in your face 6/25/2002

most people base a restaurant experience on food, service, and atmosphere. both food and atmosphere were ok. the service is terrible. i came for my friend's birthday, and the waitstaff was just plain rude. after we paid our $500 tab (for 8 people), the waiter told us we needed to ""learn how to behave."" he was the one who did a poor job serving us and knew he was getting the tip. he didnt think i would do anything about that comment. i immediately called over the manager, who apologized profusely and suspended the waiter. no one is rude me like that and gets away with it. thats the last time i'm spending money there. Pros: good ambiance Cons: service, service, service more

sherry / tapas tasting menu... 6/24/2002

Decided to try their sherry / tapas tasting menu ($42). The white gazpacho was stellar - the grilled sardines perfect - the arroz con pollo was competent - the spicy duck confit with foie gras mousse and orange peel intriguing - the goat cheese empanada was a nice finish. The matching glasses of sherry - fino to delux creme - were well matched. I was able to walk in Sunday night without reservations. No hipsters or tragic loud players so dining was enjoyable. Pros: interesting flavors more

Zero Rating 6/22/2002

I called Pipa yesterday afternoon to make reservations for 4 people at 9:00. I was told that only outside seating was available at that time. I said, "that would be fine" and had the hostess confirm my reservation before hanging up. My friends and I showed up promptly at 9:00 and we were told (by both the hostess and the manager) that our reservation was for 9:30 (not 9:00) and that "I" misunderstood. Too make a long story short -- we didn't wait until 9:30 to be seated, so I can't comment on the quality of the food. BUT if the quality of their service is any indication, then you do the math. Pros: None Cons: Rude Staff/Manager more

when nothing else will do? 6/20/2002

I decided to take 3 friends who don't know each other very well out for a night and picked pipa with some reservation after reading poor reviews. My doubts were cleared immediately, the host was friendly and yes they suggest the pitcher of sangria before you look at the menu but you should take it anyway! The food wasn't great (but I'm admitely not a fan of anything other than bland food- so perhaps that's a good thing!) but the 3 chocolate desert dish was divine. The waitstaff doesn't rush you. The decor would have given us enough to talk about had everyone not gotten along well! Pros: lively, great waitstaff Cons: a bit dark, crowded more

People are crazy..... 6/20/2002

Pipa is one of the best secrets in NYC. I have been there twice and both times were equally wonderful. Food is very unique and use alot of combinations not found in American cusine. I wouldn't have guessed it Spanish when I walked in, but you can see hints in the types of spices and cheeses they use. TRY THE CHEESEPLATE! The cheeses are wonderful, as is the Chicken Rice dish. Sangria is wonderful....but get the hidden smaller version for 15$ less....gets about 5-6 glasses! Little crowded and service could be better, but no complaints from me!! Pros: Unique food, Ambiance Cons: Crowded, Dark, Loud more

Good food, great fun! 6/12/2002

Walking into Pipa, I was expecting the worst after reading a lot of these reviews. But the food was excellent, the sangria was great, the service was very good and the atmosphere was wonderful! The only semi disappointing aspect was the price, considering how much food you get. But the quality was certainly outstanding! I recommend! more

Very Pleasant Surprise 6/11/2002

After checking out some bad reviews, I was hesitant about giving my girlfriends reservations to PIPA a try. It turned out great! Service was great, and it was trendy and stylish without being stuck up. We ordered two appitizers, one of which we didn't enjoy much. Our waiter quickly appoligized, removed it from our bill, and gave us free desert! A very nice treat - we plan to go back with a bunch of friends. Pros: Trendy, Good Service, Great Food Cons: Expensive, Crowded more

A+++++++ 6/9/2002

I've read other peoples' reviews, and I'm disappointed to see the reaction. I've been to Pipa over 10 times in the last 6 months, and every time has been outdone by the last. The food is PHENOMENAL, I've yet to be disappointed. The service is also good; the waiters always try to explain everything as if it were your first time there. Most of the time they ask if you've dined there before, in case you need an explanation on how things work. The sangria (red, i've never tried another) is SPECTACULAR, and quite effective, at that. :o) Try it, enjoy it, and return for more, like I often do. more

  • Pipa is Spanish slang for having a good time and the people of New York are doing just that at Pipa Tapas y Mas. Innovative tapas, flavorful sangria and specialty cocktails, a bustling bar scene, great music and countless chandeliers set the scene at this enchanting location.

Editorial
  • The Scene
Inside, the restaurant feels almost tent-like. Entering the candle-filled space is like opening the doors on a gypsy hideaway.

    The Food
The traditional and interpretive tapas throw a sharp focus on the definitive themes of Spanish cuisine. Few styles of cooking place such an importance on texture--baby eels in a sizzling slick of oil, for example, is nudged just a shade away from pasta by the crackle of tiny bones under your teeth. Garlic is another constant, with its fascinating range of application throughout a meal--from subtle background agent to aggressive palate-prickler.
