It is history... Sudden and without explanation.... ALL GONE! A call to the phone number gets a sad recording about the death of the mother of John Drocco, the owner. (but no particular date is given, but it just occurred, after the place closed. more

It's good for what it is. What it is ain't great N'Awlins food. 4/13/2008

Several years ago I came here for a friend's birthday. At some point we ended up having a food fight. In the middle of that, the waitress asked us if we wanted more to drink. That's what makes PJ's good. Just went back tonight for an anniversary dinner. The salad was nice. The cold seafood extravanganza (I think that's what they called it) was fine. Most of it was pretty good - fresh seafood served cold and unadorned. The jambalaya had almost no flavor. I've made jambalaya - it ain't hard to do. No excuse for that. But the waitress was great - super friendly in a genuine way. You could tell she still didn't really care about what she was doing - not like she was trying to impress us. The atmosphere is fun. Had a really good time. Go for that. Pros: Good fun Cons: Some food is good, the cajun is bland. more

I wish I could review this restaurant and tell you all about the delicious meal I had, but after waiting 30 minutes to order after receiving bread and water, we left. The restaurant was not even crowded and we could not even get someone's attention. It was like we were suddenly invisible. Really weird. more

Mediocre service, below average food 1/22/2008

I went here for the dine about town special where they have a prefix menu with the lobster. When we asked about the special menu, the waitress said they don?t have it on hard copy so she had to write it down for us. The waitress didn?t have a pen on her so she went to go get one (took about 5 mins). When she came back she wrote down the entrees. We ordered the lobster cioppino and the lobster tail. Halfway through our salad, we did not get our drinks. When we asked for our drinks again, the waitress forgot what we ordered. When she brought our drinks back she told us that they didn?t have lobster available, so we ordered off the regular menu. We ordered the 1 pound bbq shrimp and the seafood platter. The first thing I noticed was that both platters were over cooked. When seafood gets overcooked, it gets very rubbery. Also, we couldn?t tell the difference between the seafood platter and the shrimp platter, both had the same exact taste. On top of that the sides, rice and corn, tasted like the frozen bags of food you would buy at the supermarket. For a restaurant that specializes in seafood, I would think that the food would not be this bad. Pros: Great Ambiance Cons: Seafood, Service more

Have been a long-customer. From the time you walk in till the time you leave you are treated special by the friendly staff and wait people. Starting with appetizers, the cream of the crop are PJ's famous crab cakes, Alligator eggs, fried calamari and many more; On "Bayou By the Bay NIghts" Cajun food is served along with lobster, crab and crawfish. It is wonderful. One of my favorite dishes on any night is trout cahoule. It is an open piece of trout served on a black skillet, smothered with shrimp and onions. It is to die for. For starters their clam chowder is one of the best I have tasted. When my brother recently had Caeser salad he was impressed when he was asked if he wanted it cut. He said it was the best Caeser he had. My brother is not a fish eater and loves their baby lamb chips, or the smoked ribs. For dessert there are many good ones to choose from. My favorite is the bread pudding. I have to make sure I save room. I highly recommend PJ's because no matter if you love seafood or don't you will be able to find a dish you will love. God on Wednedsay or Thursday nights and guest chef Michael Reese will give you jello shots and mardi gras beads. If your lucky he will give you one of his stuffed peppers as a starter. I can't wait till I go again. Pros: friendly greeter, wait staff etc., great food and drink Cons: parking can be difficult. more

Bright Beads and Blah Food 4/11/2007

When I attended Tulane University in New Orleans, my tastebuds longed for cuisine that didn't have any sort of cajun or creole flair! Cajun japanese, creole salads, new orleans brunch- it all tasted the same... but today that dilemna fuels a bitter distaste for mediocre "new orleans cuisine" disguised poorly by cheap liquor and Bourbon Street bobbles. Because most food in New Orleans is similar, only the strong survive. But PJ's has proven, yet again, that most people outside of NOLA have no idea what good cajun food tastes like- and assume New Orleans is about jello shots and bland seafood dipped in flavored mayo! I want to like PJ's because they are nice, but they certainly don't deserve such a high rating. It's sad there aren't more options for Cajun in SF; I find myself at PJ's occasionally and normally leave asking why I wound up there again. Pros: Nice Owners and Staff, One of Few Cajun in SF Cons: Too bland and one dimensional, like standard NO tourist food on Bourbon st more

Deliciously spicy! 8/3/2006

I've been to PJ's about 3 times in the past year. If you love spicy food, this is the place to be! I've ordered the crabcakes, the gumbo, the lobster, the oysters, and the jambalaya. All were very good. I've always made reservations through OpenTable and haven't had any issues with being seated whatsoever. One time, the cook came out and gave us all very strong jello shots. I can't say anymore, but I've always had a good time at this restaurant! Pros: delicious food, great ambiance more

Terrible service 7/6/2006

We went on two occasions, and on both the service was frankly offensive. On the first they sat us at the bar and then forgot about us, nobody would take responsibility until we almost had to tackle them, and then when our food was ready we waited 10 mins for someone to help, until we actually just asked the bartender to grab it from the kitchen. The second time we showed up at 9:15, one couple was waiting before us, and they were seated, after which the hostess/waitress returned and said they were closing and would not seat us. We asked about the advertised closing time, and they said because it was slow they were closing early, YET THEY SEATED SOMEONE JUST BEFORE US. Avoid this place at all costs. Cons: Terrible service and attitude. more

Great Oysters! 1/9/2006

Ate at PJ's for the first time last night. The oysters were wonderful! The crem brulee was decent, but it is an oyster bar, so I wouldn't let that be a deciding factor. If I can't make it up north for raw oysters, I'd definitely go back there! Pros: fresh oysters, good service more

Great atmosphere, subpar food 12/18/2005

sanfranfoodie Provided by Partner
My wife and I ate here recently and sat at the bar. The servers were very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the hype that we've heard. We tried the crabcakes, which are advertised as award-winning. They were very small and soggy. Nothing like the crabcakes we've had in New Orleans. Are other dishes were equally disappointing. However, the atmosphere and friendly staff made up for the food. If you are ok with average food. I would definitely recommend P.J.'s because you will have a good, casual time. But if you're a serious food snob, perhaps this isn't the place for you. Pros: Great atmosphere, Friendly staff, Great crowd Cons: Average food more

The staff is very rude. The food is tired and non authentic. The restaurant is not clean, to say the least. The guest chef pushed drinks that we didn't order on us, and that wasn't cool. Just not what I expected of the place. Pros: - Cons: menu, locale, service more

MAMA WOULD BE PROUD 11/13/2005

galjour Provided by Partner
Every Monday down the bayou, our mamas, like their mamas and their mama before them, make red beans and rice while doing the washing. Eating red beans and rice back in Louisiana is like going to Mass on Sundays. You don't not do it. PJ's red beans and rice have a kick to them that will take the wrinkle put of any pallet. The andouille sausage gives the beans a rich flavor. The overall spiciness is just over the top in the spirit of a culture that lives over the top. Any Cajun mother would be proud of this dish. Pros: friendly service, ample portions, atmoshere Cons: crowded more

Quite simply, the food was excellent. The management and service was top-notch. And the ambience of the room was loud and full of folks enjoying their food creating a truly festive atmosphere. This restaurant holds up to everything you would expect in a great city like San Francisco. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Jello Shots, Small Portions more

Fortunately my uncle had made a reservation for our large family. This place was fun and fabulous food. We started with Fresh local oysters, crab cakes and roasted mussels to die for. Than we had the Rex salad. Our knowledgeable server recommended the mouth watering Trout and Shell feast Roast. The super friendly chef Micheal Reese dropped by with Jello Shots. We finished with an assortment of deserts. I took an extra order of Bread pudding home it was sooooo delicioso. I highly recomend making a reservation and bring your friends. You wont forget the experience. Pros: food, fun Cons: loud more

i recently moved out to the sunset, and not being familiar with the area i thought i'd have to head back across town to enjoy good food and a better vibe - thank god for PJs! some friends recommended it as a good hang-out spot with a new orleans feel and having had such a good time there, i feel obliged to do the same. *not* the place for snobby, gentrified folk who come into the city (from Marin?) to nibble frisee salads by candlelight...this place is a real, down-home, come-as-you-are-and-eat-some-damn-good-food festival in a box. the servers are open & friendly and the food is uniquely delicious. damn good drinks, too. they don't even mind that you get loud and boisterous and litter your table/floor with crabshells or shrimp peelin's - heck, they encourage it! keep up the good work PJs!! the city needs more places like this. Pros: crowded (successful!) Cons: parking difficult more

neighborhood classic! 10/25/2005

I moved here from across the country a year ago and live in the sunset. Pj's has become my home! It's always hard being away from family and they've adopted me with warm welcome hands. The food and ambiance are a close second to the loving vibe. I even got two invitations for thanksgiving since i won't be able to go home. You can't help but wonder "what goes on in that place" glacing through the window while passing by on the muni. A magnetic attraction! once inside you are greeted with a smile and often times a jello shot if guest chef michael resse is working. The open kitchen keeps your senses aroused at all times. rising flames, cajun aroma and fast hands make the overall experience stimulating. The inner sunset would not be the same without PJ's making a noteable neighborhood classic!! more

Some lagniappe and Hot servers 10/23/2005

ursadance Provided by Partner
One of the only places to get some langiappe( a little something extra ) while you wait. That could be a mojito, or a calamari apetizer. The host called us "dalin'" with his friendly New Orleans accent as he sat us and handed us jellow shots. Great apetizers and entrees along with the warm cajun atmosphere. Hot service and hot food! Gotta love it! more
