Haaaaa-rrible... Please don't go here. Ever. 1/10/2009

First off, the day me and my roomies (who are avid brunchers) went in (one week ago today actually), we put our names in for the wait (which now having eaten there, I can't imagine there being enough people wanting to actually eat there to constitute a wait... must be first-timers there like we were) anyway, I digress. So. We put our names in, get our time quote and wait outside in the freezing cold (there's no inside waiting area really, it's to small a place) which actually was fine. we were bundled up and all. Then, I see an open table that would fit my party o'five and remind the girl of my name and she tells me that they had misplaced their list... ha! She sits us immediately and when I try to make a joke about it not being a problem that their list was misplaced, she took it in completely the wrong way and was a bit snarky with me. We sit, order drinks and come to find out they were out of not only orange juice, but coffee as well... tisk, tisk! That should just never happen at brunch. ever. Ev-er. Even that didn't spoil the brunch though. As our food began trickling out, some items were missing and later just altogher cancelled because of how long it was taking for them to come out. (Mind you at this point the place had really cleared out...) We start on our meals and the food was soooo bad. It had no taste to it and the things with discernable flavors were not good at all and left me wishing that they didn't have flavor at all they were so nasty. *Even if you completely ignore this review, DO NOT try the country ham or whatever it;s called... That was the worst part of the meal. I will give them this though. Their sticky bun was yummy. The service left little to be desired, but I feel bad complaining about her, as I could tell she was having a rough day. All in all, go elsewhere if you can... and if you can't, just brace yourself and get coffee (if they have it) and a sticky bun... Happy Brunching NYC! J Pros: location? Cons: the horrible (aka haaaaa-rrible) food, the service staff's attitudes more

Ma and Pap's fried chicken and corn pancakes- yum! 7/31/2008

Love this spot! Especially great from Sunday brunch or random Southern-style cravings. Their mixed berry hotcakes are the best. Service can be a bit slow, but that's part of the vibe. Also, try their teas, coffees and chocolate cake- amazing. Beware- HUGE servings, enough to split between two with an extra side order of corn bread, which is quite tasty. Pros: Chill spot, tasty food, huge servings and good value Cons: Slow service, rundown country ambience more

Southern Food 1/11/2008

I was very disappointed in this place. The service was fine but to say the food was mediocre would be too much of a compliment. I ordered the fried chicken. It was soggy and completely covered in a tasteless white gravy. Every dish I tried was flavorless and underwhelming. Pros: atmosphere Cons: bland, poorly prepared food more

an east village institution 12/31/2007

as two reformed southerners and long time east village residents, we know good southern food when we have it and this place hits the nail on the head every single time. it is admittedly slammed for brunch and there can be a bit of a wait, and the wait staff are clearly running themselves ragged, but once seated we've never once encountered anything but warm and friendly service.. is this the kind of place where someone will greet you at the door and say "hi my name is mindi-with-an-i, and i'll be your server today?" of course not. this is the east village after all. if you're looking for that sort of experience try the upper west side or better still your local i-hop back home. but definitely don't go back to old devil moon, there will be less of a wait for us! peace out. Pros: great food, great service Cons: sometimes very busy at brunch more

This place feels like family!!!!! 12/28/2007

i've been eating at the old devil moon since i moved to the city ten years ago and i think it just keeps getting better. i don?t know but that other guy must just have been having a bad day! i have always been treated really well here whether i came in for brunch of biscuits and sausage gravy with over easy (my old favorite), or huevos rancheros (my new favorite). the green sauce is spicy for sure, but this isn?t Applebee?s either!!! the staff seems to go out of their way to recognize regulars and i have felt like they were genuinely happy to see me come in again and again. dinners are usually less busy than brunch, although i have been there on a weekend and seen sara handling the full place with a nice smile and good attitude (she has been there for years now as have quite a few of the waitresses). my dinner favorites are the shrimp and andouille gumbo with the honey cornbread, the tofu portabella ribs, and the catfish tacos. don?t forget to order some deviled eggs for the table (not too many places in the city selling those), and a side of string beans that have the most crunchy and salty garlic spice sauce. they make all the desserts homemade and the peanut butter pie is essential. the black and white cake is also remarkably like one i remember from school lunches, but in a good way, cake almost black and decorated different every time. i think i remember it bearing the likeness of saddam hussein one time..... there aren?t too many places around that feel as special as old devil moon. i think it is actually better now than it ever has been. Pros: cozy and casual, very "homey" more

worst service ever and salty boring food 12/9/2007

my friends and i will never be returning to old devil moon. the wait staff was so incredibly rude as soon as we walked in, had we not been meeting friends for brunch, we would have walked right out the door . when our order was taken we could tell that the waitress (who was wreaking of b.o) was not listening at all and after saying tofu scramble and no cheese to her twice she walked away without repeating our order back to us. someone else returned with 2 plates of scrambled eggs covered in cheese and then had to go check with the server who then said it was our fault and we had ordered scrambled eggs not tofu scramble. we were then told that they would remake it for us but it would take a long time and our friends breakfast burrito would sit there getting cold so he should eat it now. i really was expecting to be charged for the scrambled eggs as well and was surprised that it was not on the check. i made it a point to be exceptionally polite to these people just because they were so rude. it didn't work. when our food came, finally, the tofu scramble would have been incredibly bland if it wasn't for all the salt, the grits were ok but cold and the breakfast burrito came with guacamole that was so spicy it had to be scraped off the top (i love spicy food and i couldn't eat it). normally bloody mary's and mimosa's would have been ordered but we decided that the service was so poor that we skipped them and headed to another bar afterward. we were basically treated like garbage by all of the staff in this restaurant, the food was terrible and so not worth the money. at the table next to us i over heard the waitress being rude to them as well, and i thought how did all of these people get and keep their jobs? and how does this place stay in business? more

Wowie! Is the brunch overrated! 11/3/2007

While I've had a few nice dinners here, I made the mistake of popping in for the "famous" brunch. It was chaotic when we entered, which is to be expected but the service was appalling and much of the food came out cold! We were a party of 6 and we all got our food at different times. One of my friends did not receive his burger until the rest of us were almost finished and the bun was fully burned on the underside while the meat itself was cold. The exasperated waitress seemed put upon when we asked about the elusive burger. "This place has really gone down the tubes," is how my neighborhood friend summed it up." While some portions were generous, the huevos rancheros were barely enough for one. Tasty pancakes but that was really about it. With so much good brunch available in the neighborhood, it's a mystery how they can get away with overcharging for such a celebration of mediocity and bad service. Boo! Stop resting on your laurels & get it together! Pros: good non-brunch grub Cons: snotty waitresses, SLOW service more

The South in the City 4/2/2007

i2ivis Provided by Partner
Since there are barely any restaurants in the city that go for the whole southern/cajun style cuisine, this place is really one of a kind. The crusted catfish is excellent, and the atmosphere is a refreshing change from all the ritzy places in the city. A little pricey, but worth the extra dollars for a place with some character. Pros: Food, atmosphere Cons: a little pricey more

Bad Service 8/27/2005

rororow Provided by Partner
We had three problems with Old Devil Moon: the price of the food was unreasonably high for certain dishes (8 dollars for 2 eggs, an English Muffin, and a side of fruit consisting of a quarter of a banana, part of an apple, and a few giant, soft, green-grapes); they charged us 20% gratuity for a 6 person table, when the 6th person was a friend dropping by for ten minutes and consuming an iced coffee; and the manager was unpleasant, inflexible, and bitchy. I used to be a huge fan of Old Devil Moon, going there a few times a month. I will not return. Pros: serves food Cons: bad service more

equal opportunity for vegetarians and meat-eaters 8/26/2005

went here early for an early dinner on a friday w/ friends. only a couple occupied tables. drinks came quickly but our entrees took quite awhile. as a vegetarian i was thrilled with the options for me; my meat-eating friends had a ton of choices, too. my friend got the special (served til 7pm) - catfish, slaw, rice, a PBR or iced tea AND dessert for $10! the sangria is great but avoid the pricey nothing-special rot beer float. Pros: great special til 7pm, unusual menu, great veg. options Cons: service slow, some pricey dishes more

Great for Vegetarians 3/4/2005

This place is very homey and is great for vegetarians although they also have meat dishes. I am not a vegetarian, but at this place I prefer the chicken fried tofu to the chicken fried steak. Everything I've tried at this place is good. I highly recommend going on Thursday nights when they have live music! Pros: Good Food, Comfortable more

Was looking for some good soul food on a budget. Had to hail down waittresses in trashy outfits too busy chatting at the bar to notice you. Food was horrible. I will never again go to Old Devil Moon. more

Eclectic Brunch 3/22/2003

The first time I went to New York [with friends] we went here to have Brunch. It was half an hour to three I think, they were about to stop serving but they let us order anyway. It was soooo good, and the biscuits are very good, this coming from a southerner. So i moved to New York and this is officially one of my favorite places for Brunch is i'm looking for something more traditional, with a spin. Lot's of good, spicy sauces as well- which is intresting up here in the bland [when it comes to hot stuff] North. Pros: Hot and Spicy Avail., Good, Good area Cons: A Tad Pricey more

I've liked what I've eaten at Old Devil Moon, but considering how crowded it is at brunch, I don't know whether it's really worth it. Everything is a la carte at brunch, so if you're expecting to get a deal for $10 that includes coffee and a drink like at other local brunch places, then mosey. But great pecan pancakes, and large quantities. Service was random at best...but the place was packed. more

Veggie Moon 9/9/2002

While the service was really, really slow, they were also really really nice and I enjoyed my meal at this funky little east village space. The options for vegetarians were numerous and I had trouble deciding, which is a switch from the usual "well, I guess I am having X caue it is the only veggie dish on the menu" The buffalo tofu fingers were great and I'll be back soon to try some other dishes. Pros: cheap, live music, vegetarian friendly Cons: slow service more

Never again for breakfast 7/29/2002

sadie Provided by Partner
Maybe I'll have better luck with their dinner menu, but breakfast was quite disappointing. The pancakes tasted like wet flour no matter how much maple syrup I drowned them in, and the ham was thin and practically charred. I was so pleased with the friendly service (at first) that I commented to my friend that it didn't seem like NY. However, at the end of our meal the lump of flour in my stomach turned when we were asked to leave because other people were waiting. There was only ONE party that had just arrived - they would have surely waited 5 minutes without becoming impatient. And we wouldn't have left with such a sour taste in our mouths -- literally and figuratively. more

Maybe Try It Weeknights w/ a Few People! 6/18/2002

Went to ODM with 12 friends on a Sat night for a birthday dinner. Food was great- down home cookin'. The fun & relaxed atmosphere only added to the positive experience. It wasn't all positive though. The wait staff went from apathetic to almost-friendly, and sort-of attentive. They must not be used to large parties, even though we tried to make reservations ahead of time. Also we called ahead to get the OK if to bring in a cake from the outside. We were told there was no charge, yet they charged $1 per slice that night! The prices aren't too pretty, though reasonable for the area. Maybe ODM is more pleasant & friendly on a weeknight with just a few people, but please don't try to bring in a large party on a weekend! Pros: excellent food, location- near bars!, atmosphere Cons: unfriendly service, pricey more

The best thing about ODM is its vast selection--vegetarians and meatatarians eat side by side without issue. The funky decor is pleasing, too. more

Lost its glow 5/16/2002

When it first opened, this was a favorite. Tasty Southern cooking at inexpensive prices. It's stayed farly cheap, but the food quality has declined. Everything is overcooked and tastes the same. Service is molasses-like. Great jukebox and beer list, though. more
