Karma is something else! 2/9/2009

I witnessed the doorman and valet attempt to run this game on a person they didnt know was a police officer. The doorman decided the officers slacks, and button down shirt were not enough to get in. This black officer and his girl friend. Politely advised that three men ahead of them let into the bar not wearing jackets. The bouncer smirked and advised that was them and this is you. The officer walked away to his vehicle still parked on the curb as he valet had not parked it yet. The officer then contacted the valet and asked for his money back (20.00) as his vehicle had not been parked. The valet advised he would need to return at the end of the night (3am) if he wanted his money back. The officer looked at both the doorman and the valet and said " oh, i see your game." He then pulled out his badge and threatened to take action on the valet. The valet advised here is your money have a nice night. The doorman thought it was funny and decided now to let the officer and his girlfriend in. The officer declined and offered us a ride to another club. We ended up partying with the cop and his girlfriend the rest of the evening. We all hope the bar closes for good! Pros: looks really nice online Cons: selective entry more

I am so confused! 11/24/2008

I really have no idea what's going on, I feel like I am in the twilight zone! Well maybe not that dramatic, but what Obar are all these people talking about??? Bc I am having trouble believing it's that tiny little underground place on Main I know as Obar! I'm not defending the bar, I find the place a bit too hard to walk through/ get a drink anyway, but was so curious I had to ask! I live downtown and have been to Obar roughly 50 times over the past 3 years since moving to Dallas and I couldn't be more confused! Waiting in hours-long lines? Lists? Slipping money to bouncers? Did I accidentally link to the Ghostbar reviews somehow? And I don't even know what is going on with all of the racism stuff... I've never noticed anything other than a well mixed crowd. Who are the non-whites not getting in? Asian? Black? Hispanic? Again, I'm just curious at this point... bc the Obar all these people are talking about just.... doesn't exist? By the way, heard rumors Obar shut down? What happened with that? That was like... at least a month ago. more

WOW 11/24/2008

When I read the first review about the discrimination going on, I figured it was just because you were mad but as I am going through the reviews, it seems like every other review is about them discriminating. And I think that whoever responded by basically saying these people are pulling out the race card, you should have a real hard time looking at yourself in the mirror. I went to there once last year for halloween and had a great time. Then again it was predomanately black and the people throwing it was black. But I have never seen them have another party like that again. I was hoping they would do it again this year but now I wonder. Definately what did it for me is the young lady who's black friend got turned away from the door because they wern't on the list and no one was even holding a list. I seriously don't think more that one particular person would get on here and say the same thing if its not true. If it is true, you need to not defend the club mr. busness person doing the responses and listen, and investigate the situation to be on the safe side because these are serious acusations. This is illegal and should not be taken lightly. I however, will not go again and am glad that I didn't attempt to before. And Im already letting other people know about this so that they can tell other people too. more

Avoid at all cost! 10/13/2008

No stars for this one! Obar will give you an OMG moment. This establishment has not received the memo that the civil rights act passed. It is unacceptable that in this day and age Neanderthals are placed in front of an establishment to bar the entrance of intelligent, articulate, well dressed and financially able adults. Hmmm... Here's a thought. Maybe instead of suits, and designer dresses we'll show up with picket signs! My recommendation is to Boycott OBAR until the management changes its philosophy and these people are replaced. Pros: It's well known Cons: The bigots stationed at the entrance. more

Its Not Obar... its Rbar you know what R stands for 10/11/2008

I am not writing this just because I got upset they didn't let me in for the first time.I understand sometimes it would get really crowded and they won't let you in if you get there late. I went yesterday with couple of my friends again, and got there at 10.P.M , there were two bouncers at the door, there were no line and he let 6 white people in front of us without any question. I showed my ID, he was like Oh..we can't let you in because you didn't reserve a table and its crowded.GREAT We dressed up pretty well and we are professionals , But the matter of fact is he didn't wanna let us in and when we turned and started walking away those bouncers were smiling at each other as if they have accomplished something great in their life(Losers). I was like forget it, and lets go to Green ville which we had blast later. If you are not white they won't let you in which was so obvious when they didn't let us in for the 3rd time. I understand you people want to let decent people and maintain some standard. But in no dictionary it says decent mean WHITE. The bouncers are so horrible and they own this place. You need to tip them to get in(which I came to know later) when white guys walk in free in front of you. Come on, rather you people can have cover and I am happy to pay for it. STOP BS about you need to reserve table and its so crowded we can't let you in, @ 10 P.M when no one was standing outside and you can see others walk in before you without any problem and he didn't have any list to check either??? It would have been great if I had videotaped and posted it on you tube, But I am sure someone might do that soon. Bottom line don't waste time checking out this horrible place until things changes and they give respect to other people which I doubt would never happen until the management take this seriously. Pros: Ambience , Crowd Cons: Everything Else more

Discrimination at it's Finest! 10/9/2008

I hate this place with a passion! I've only been a few times and everytime is a bad experience! This place treats ppl horrible. The bouncer makes ppl wait FOREVER to get in. and then finally get in an hour later to see that it is nowhere near crowded! this is the type of spot where you have to "Play by rules". Like, if you are not a white guy then you have to dress better than the average white guy just to get in. That is unless you walk up with 3-4 hot model type chicks than they dont care. Either that or tip the bouncer. I will NEVER go to this place again! Save the hassle and go to Ivy or Dolce. more

What a shock ... 9/15/2008

I was doing research to locate unique venues for our patrons. I work in an upscale hotel downtown. After reading the comments regarding "discrimination" I know I certainly wouldn't feel as though I was doing anyone a service by sending to them Obar. I hope the owners address this issue as it most certainly will hurt business. I send legions of customers to local spots daily and am leery about sending them here after reading some of the comments. more

What a fantastic place!!!!! 7/1/2008

I went for their 4th b-day party and had an amazing time! It's trendy and a very good example of the urban texan. Some are better than other ( people) but you find that everywhere. They try to be discrimanating at the door without zeroing out most. It does get corwded so get there early, the later it gets the more ' trendy' the people that try to get in get, so just have some fun and behave in front of the doorman :) He is there to make sure we all have fun! Pros: great crowd , drinks and music Cons: none more

Pay (bribe) the bouncer and skip the line 6/22/2008

Having been to O-Bar a few times before, and liking it, my friends and I decided to go back this weekend. We get to the door and there is about 20 people waiting in line. Not too bad, its a nice place and worth the wait, right? Well, not this time. The line didn't seem to move yet people kept walking past us and getting in. VIPs, or so I thought. After waiting for close to an hour, we get to the front of the line and the bouncer lets half of our group in and leaves three of us waiting in line for another half hour. It was then that I noticed what was really going on at the door. People would walk up to the bouncer, shake hands, pass some folded bills in the handshake and walk in. The bouncer would then transfer the cash to his left hand and slip it in his pocket. I have seen a number of bad reviews here that point to mainly poor management so I doubt this practice will change. So next time I think of going to O Bar, I will have to decide between waiting in line, bribing bouncer or walking away. Pros: Nice decor Cons: Poor service more

Fun and trendy 6/22/2008

i love the setup at obar. very chic and trendy. and it draws a great crowd! the drinks can be a little pricey, but what else can you expect downtown. more

Awesome! 5/24/2008

Went last Friday night, had a great time! They played great music, but it was not too loud so you could actually have a conversation in the place. This place has a lounge area, patio, and great service at the bar! Only negative that I experienced was the valet service took a little too long, but besides that I had a great time. I am looking forward to going back. Pros: great music, great service at bar Cons: valet service took too long more

Horrible If you are Not White Do Not Go 5/12/2008

People let's stand together and Boy Cott. Why are we giving money to an establishment to increase there revenue, when they don't even want us there. Think about !!!!!!!!!! Don't give your slave masters money to enslave you. more

obar is still my favorite spot!! 4/23/2008

I have been going to Obar for almost two years now and it is still my favorite bar in Dallas. The staff makes me feel like I am apart of their family and the crowd always makes for interesting people watching. One of the best things about Obar is that it is eclectic, you don't have to fit a certain profile to feel like you belong. If you haven't been there or if it has been awhile then I suggest hitting it up on a Friday night, the DJ is great! more

great vibe 4/21/2008

I'm hispanic, and visit this bar when I can. They treat me very well! I have not felt discriminated against at all. Its a great place, w/o the guestlist nonsense and no cover! Good pours and great patio. Im just going off what i've experienced and it has been great. Crowd has always been diverse on my visits as well. Pros: no guestlist, no cover Cons: dallas drink prices are starting to resemble nyc more

You Deserve a Law Suit 4/8/2008

New to Texas and searching for new places my husband and i would like...your place sounded like our what we might enjoy...until i read your reviews. Its one thing to get a bad review, my husband and i both have 25+ years in the restaurant business, my husband is currently a COO of a food chain and so we are very sensitive to service and attitude, he deals with online complaints regularly. Some are legitimate and others will always be unwarranted...BUT YOUR RESPONSE TO THIS COMPLAINT SHOULD BE GROUNDS FOR DISMISSAL - the owner of this bar should seriously consider the implications that have been made and whomever responded in such a callous and LAME way should be fired. There is nothing worse than a great place with horrible management...and obviously this is one of them....No thanks, you lost a great customer over nothing more than ignorance. As a caucasion the discrimination disturbs me, but it was your response that is a complete turn off - my advice as the average customer... delete change your response...my advice as a professional...DELETE IT AND HIRE NEW MANAGEMENT! more

Still stuck in the past 3/10/2008

Most friends who have been to this club complains of one thing. The fact that they are discriminatory and that is very sad at this age..well that can only happen in texas.. so beware if you African American, Native or Latino. You will only enjoy this bar if you are caucasian..They are very discriminating to guests that are not whites.. more

Disappointing! 3/8/2008

A group of us came to Dallas for business. Obar was recommended for its atmosphere and chill unpretentious attitude. Well we get there ,on a Saturday night, and found the opposite. Three of us walked in after just showing our I.D.?s. The other two African American male members in our group walked up later after valet parking, but couldn?t get in. The door man saw them and immediately said ?you can?t come in you?re not on the list.? The funny or not so funny thing is there was no list. The door man was holding no list to reference. The first group of us were inside for 30 minutes waiting. The decorum is trendy. It looks like a chill spot, but it was too crowed for the small venue. The D.J. was good. Once we left and rejoined the other two members of our party ,we waited for valet for another 30 minutes. While outside we observed the door man usher in dozens of people without mentioning or referencing any list. It?s disappointing that this club discriminates against people based on the color of their skin. In Los Angeles there are a lot of pretensions clubs with more people on the outside trying to get in than on the inside. The difference is these clubs often treat the average White guy the same as the average Black guy, bad. It?s not right, but being denied entry, based on ethnicity is hurtful and illegal. Pros: DJ Cons: Discriminantory more

all trash at one place 1/29/2008

if you want to get disrespected,WELCOME TO OBAR, They should change the name from obar to trash bar, Bouncers crazy, they wil make you wait outside purposly for 15-30 min by saying, club is packed but that's not true, they will make other go inside whom they know(WHITE PEOPLE), when you go inside you only see bartenders only giving preferences to WHITE PEOPLE, C'mon people it's 2008 be nice world has changed, This place needs miracle to survive, i would never ever recommend this trashy place to anybody. more
