Still well-loved 7/8/2008

Nordstrom has long been a local favorite in Portland. I now live across the country but seek it out everywhere I go because I can depend on the excellent service and generally cutting-edge stock. Nordstrom's women departments carry a lot of fashionable boutique brands but the store can offer service and return guarantees that boutiques cannot. The downtown store now boasts gucci, chanel, and dolce and gabbana boutiques, but will never be as cold and stark as Saks. I used to think i would look like everyone else if I always shopped there- not true. Also not true is the above poster's comment about employee retention. While turnover may happen, I know many people that have worked there for years (though some seasonally) and many employees are extremely devoted to the company, which also means they believe in what they're selling. more

losing the most important part of Nordstrom, resulting in lessor Customer Service 10/15/2006

The ""Word on the Street"" is that all the Nordstrom stores are rapidly losing long-time employees, from District Managers to the sales floor. The downtown store seems to have a few old-time people left and the rest are young kids who neither know, nor care, nor expect to stay very long. Offering current employees 100. per anyone, from anywhere, that the employee can get to take the interview and take the job pretty much says it all. Pros: High qualityof merchancise Cons: severe lack of product knowledge due to constant quitting of employees more

Suits & shoes great, casual ok 6/18/2002

I find Nordstoms in Portland to have, as always, an incredible selection of mens shoes and suits. The dress casual attire is not my style or need so I can not comment on that- at least they don't offer what I need. For the very casual attire, Brass Rail?, mediorce is the theme. While they do have some great brands (BC Ethic/Lucky/Etc) they just don't have the selection. The furthur out of downtown the worse this department gets. Service is always great, but just not a big department or what I need. When I have a suit to buy or dress/dress casual shoes- Nordstrom is where I go first and usually last. Pros: Men's suits, shoes, customer service Cons: dress casual, casual selection more
