Great Seafood and Service 12/30/2008

My wife and I frequent Newport Bay 1-3 times a month for their great happy hour. The last few times we noticed they had changed their Dinner menu and we saw a few things we really wanted to try. We never came in for dinner before and we were really impressed with the food and service. Our server was warm and friendly and helped us narrow down our choices. All the courses were well timed and just the right portions. I had the seafood sampler that had fried cod, halibut, salmon and oysters. My wife had the seared scallops which were huge. Overall we had a great dinner and now we'll be back for more than just happy hour. Pros: Good seafood choices Cons: Not a lot of dessert choices more

Ample parking, mediocre food and service 7/9/2008

We went in for Happy Hour tonight. We expected the food to be a good representation of the dinner menu, and I hope that it wasn't! We ordered fish cakes, fish and chips, and the pear salad. All of it was boring, and unsatisfying. The pear salad had bleu cheese on it, but only a few pieces. The pear was under-ripe and crisp. Even for happy hour, the portions for the fish and chips was small. The salad was fairly large, tho. The waitress was slow and not very attentive. We will skip it next time, and go either to Beaches, or Stanfords. Pros: Good parking, good location Cons: Not a good place for happy hour more

I really enjoy the food at Newport Bay. 3/5/2008

I have enjoyed everything that I have eaten at Newport Bay. I do believe the tea is weak in flavor. My new choice is the Asian Chicken Salad. Believe the staff could improve in customer service....seems like it takes a while before they realize your drinks are low. Would live to see some "diet" meals on the menu, i.e. Weight Watchers with points and would like to see the Asian Chicken Salad on that list. Pros: Food, parking, Cons: Tea is weak, servers are slow on checking refills, avoid 5-7 PM very busy more

Uninspring, but palattable 3/8/2007

I celebrated my wife's birthday here last weekend with my family. The crab-flavored dip was okay for an appetizer, and the pan fried oysters were also ho-hum - I know that's not very descriptive, but the food looked and tasted like the same fare I'd find at a RedRobin, Applebees, or other mass-marketed chain store. Certainly nothing special even though they were touted as "Specials". My burger looked like a dressed up McDonald's patty - certainly nothing to write home about - and about what you'd expect at a seafood house... so I won't hold that against them. Two of my kids had the kids fish and chips... my elder boy (age 12) decided he wanted grown up food and ordered the halibut and chips from the adult menu. Curious that the kids' menu cod tasted and looked a lot like the adult's fried halibut, even though they're nothing alike. Having four different waitresses during the meal didn't help the agonizingly slow (though friendly) service. The price was about what I'd expected for a full dinner for five ($75). But the really tough part was explaining to my kids that we wouldn't be coming back to redeem their "complimentary sundae on next visit" coupons they were handed on their way out the door. Given the food experience, a free sundae with kids' meal would be appropriate - I mean, even Shari's, Denny's, and Sizzler do that sometimes (and this meal was about on par with their dining experiences). Pros: Price was right for the food quality/service. Cons: Chain-store fare; Nothing special about the experience. more

Pricey Sunday Brunch not worth it 7/23/2006

Very disappointing Sunday brunch. Menu sounds good. Taste is something else. Presentation even worse. I ordered Stufed French Toast with marion blackberries. It was truly awful, and the brunch items on the buffet table were ordinary and very unoriginal. For $15 a head for breakfast I espected much better. The restaurant was not crowded, despire a beautiful Sunday late morning, when most places are packed. Now I know why. Service was ok. Nothing special. Waitress was just getting through her day. Pros: Lots of seating, seldom a wait Cons: The Food, The Service, Very Ordinary more

Get Catched Here! 11/6/2002

My mother, sister and I went out to a wedding on the Oregon coast as we drove from Seattle to the coast we decided to stop at this seafood restaurant even though I don't like seafood. I ate the Hazelnut Halibut and it was incredible! I am just craving another taste of it but, since I live in Minnesota, I doen't think I'll ever make it back there! We all just loved this place, the food was awesome. The only problem was very slow service... Pros: Good location, Awesome food Cons: Slow service more

worth the flight 7/11/2002

Ever since I moved from the Northwest 3 years ago, I've planned my business trips to fly into Portland. Why? The hazlenut breaded halibut, it's worth the price of the flight. Pros: halibut preperation Cons: iced tea weak more
