Indian for food lovers 2/22/2012

I'm always skeptical about the authenticity of ethnic restaurants in touristy areas. Given that New Delhi Indian Restaurant is just 1 block from the Union Square madness means it's a pretty big red flag for me. However, I was recently here on a business dinner with some out of town co-workers who love Indian food, and the restaurant didn't disappoint. Most of the dishes ordered seemed to be very flavorful and had spice (usually restaurants wimp out on the spice because they think people can't handle it). That was a refreshing surprise! We ordered the mixed vegetable pakoras, papadum, and samosas as appetizers. All were solid, and a really great way to begin an Indian meal. For the main dish, I chose to go with one of the Ranjan's Specials, namely the spicy madras tamarind chicken. Being a huge fan of tamarind and never seeing such a dish on a standard menu at Indian restaurants, this was a no brainer! It was delicious!! More on the sweet side than the tangy side, so it was an explosion of flavor for the taste buds. Loved every bite of it. The others ordered a variety of chicken, lamb, and seafood curries, as well. What I noticed was that the restaurant does not cheap out on the quantity of meat in curries. Usually you go to an Indian restaurant and they've got about 4 pieces of meat incorporated into a whole dish of curry and charge you about $12 or so for it. The dishes here were averaging about $15, but the amount of meat in the curries was fantastic! None of us finished any of the curries, because everything was so plentiful! more

Always a pleasure 4/18/2011

I have been to New Delhi many times and have never once been disappointed. The setting is comfortable and decorated in such a way that you will feel transported to another country. The food is always delicious even when from a buffet. The only downside is that rice is not included with entrees, which can be a problem if you are having a spicy vindaloo or curry. The service however is always top class, and the waitstaff will always be sure that you have plenty of water! They have a nice selection of Indian beers to go with a reasonably priced meal. more

Kudos to the chef 4/10/2011

Very creative - but still classic - Indian cuisine, but there's a subtly to taste that reflects credit to the chef. It's not just spices but with delicate flavorings that has this restaurant compare favorably to the Michelin-starred Indian restaurants in London. Seating is crowded and servers are nice but a little over-worked. Still, given the price this is a bargain --and a true culinary adventure. more

Worth the travel! 11/11/2010

I love Indian food, having had difficulty in finding a good upscale Indian restaurant in SF, New Delhi solved my problem when I discovered it 4 years back. I live in Antioch and travel all the way to Union Square to enjoy this wonderful food....Chicken Tikka is awesome, so is Biryani...i might have tried all their dishes in these years and everything tastes so good, not to mention the naan and samosas...Good food and the owner always greets me like family. more

Awesome drinks and food 10/19/2010

We started in the bar, so I'm starting my review there. It was dark it was raining, all we wanted was to slip into a dry martini. The bartender suggested a lychee martini, apparently they infuse their own vodka. Sold. Man, that was good. We had just started the second round when our table was ready, so off to food. Diner was excellent too. Everything is served family style, so sharing is easy. The portion sizes are decent and the nan bread is cooked to order and served screaming hot. All in all, a great evening. I recommend the rogan josh, spicy but not overwhelming. more

  • In Short
An upscale choice for North Indian cuisine, this restaurant right off Union Square has a dark, wooden interior that opens past the full bar into a large, dressy dining room. The space has a vintage feel thanks to lots of old wood and exposed brick. Dishes include traditional Indian fare--curries, tandoori, rogan josh, tikka masala--and more exotic choices such as kofta shah jahani (stuffed meatballs) and murg akbari (spiced chicken with dried fruits).
