Great for locals and visitors 10/5/2010

""I took an out of town business client to New Delhi recently and had an outstanding meal and experience. The menu is adventurous and diverse-- very nice selection of classic Indian dishes and chef's specials. Food was well prepared, seasoned, and sauced; had the tandoori chicken, mango prawns and rogan josh. Recommend you share the appetizers and main courses alike to sample as much as possible. Start with the samosas. Excellent drink list, wait staff, and ambience in a convenient downtown location-- close enough to SF public transport. Will be back again with family and clients."" more

Great for crowds 8/19/2010

My friends had their engagement party here. They reserved the bar for an hour then we all drifted into the dining room and enjoyed some of the best Indian food I've ever eaten. Because it was a large mixed party, there were some Indian food virgins in the mix. The staff went out of their way to make sure that everyone knew what they were eating and were comfortable with the spice levels. The vegetarians were happy, the gluten-free folks were happy and I'm trying to figure out how to get nimbu panis delivered to my home by the cute bartender. more

Indian food like Indian eat 8/2/2010

If you have ever grown up eating Indian food DON'T miss this place. Mostly Northern Indian with a page of Chef's Specials from around India.. The naan is made to order and delivered screaming hot to the table. Located a couple blocks from Union Square on the edge of the Tenderloin. This is the best Indian restaurant for it's price that I know of, and the dishes are not modified for an American taste!!! Pros: Authentic food, full bar, great for groups Cons: Parking, can be a wait on weekends more

Highly Recommended 4/8/2010

We went to dinner here on the recommendation of the concierge at the Four Seasons. We told her that we wanted some good food, but not something we could find in our hometown. She suggested New Delhi and definitely hit the mark. The menu was wonderful and I wish we could have tried everything on it. We settled for the Chili Cheese Pakoras, Mango Prawns, Sag Paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala. The food was spicy, but the tastes and combinations were delightful. Everything was delicious and dessert was the perfect end to one delicious and different dinner. Would go back in a heartbeat to try something different and would not hesitate recommending it to anyone. Pros: Great food, close to lots of good stuff Cons: parking more

Awesome nan & curries! 2/4/2010

We all have our comfort food. Mine is chicken korma, smooth, chunks of chicken, cashews and raisins over saffron rice - delish! New Delhi does this better than anyone else I've found in the city. The fact that they make lychee martinis is just frosting on the cake. Pros: Great food and service Cons: Crappy parking more

Wonderful north Indian cuisine 12/22/2009

When my entire family is together we have three vegetarians, two gluten-free folks, four unabashed carnivores and two people who just want to eat already. We all managed to agree on Indian food and off we trooped to New Delhi - where we stuffed ourselves silly and had a grand time. I think I know where all the special occasion meals will be from here on out. The staff is great and they helped the Indian newbies find something tasty. Highly recommended. Pros: Great food and service Cons: Parking, but it's near Union Square, so it's expected more

Naan bread from heaven 8/25/2009

Whether you're from India or not, it's difficult to NOT enjoy this gastronomic experience. The food is simply, and I do mean simply amazing. Just the right amount of seasoning to let the flavor of the food stand out. The presentation is grand, the drinks are up to par with the food. I recommend the Lychee Martini...actually the entire cocktail list is amazing. Save room for dessert, it's well worth it. Every part of India is represented, North, South, East and West, some of which has the addition of a flavorful Western influence. Go- try, and enjoy. I know I have, and look forward to it every time. Pros: Fantastic food Cons: Lousy parking more

Wonderful curries 5/16/2009

We went to New Delhi Restaurant on the strength of CitySearch and other reviews and were not disappointed. This isn't an inexpensive, let's-take-all-the-kids budget restaurant but an elegant and professionally conducted dining experience. We opted for several curry dishes, a tandoori sampler, and rice. The tastes on offer were subtle, well blended, perfectly pitched. This is a place I will definitely explore some more the next time I'm in San Francisco. Pros: Great food and service, the nan is outstanding Cons: Lack of street parking more

Great authentic Indian cuisine 4/13/2009

My girlfriend and I stopped in here for a nice dinner a few nights ago. We didn't have reservations and the bar was kinda full, but we got sat quickly and had a waiter at our elbow shortly after. My sweetie is an Indian newbie and our server was great at answering questions and making suggestions. We went with a couple of them and were very happy with our meal. The rogan josh is great if you like spicy food, the chicken korma is great if you don't. We'll be back and this time we'll make a reservation. Edit: Tried the new Chef's Tasting Menu and wanted to give it two forks up. A great addition to an already fantastic place. Pros: Addictive nan bread Cons: Lack of parking more

Great start to a wonderful evening 1/27/2009

We went to New Delhi last night. Had a memorable evening and received wonderful service. We are vegetarians and our server recommended a delicious combination of eggplant and spinach dishes along with some wonderful nan bread and saffron rice, with an amazing Indian beer. Service was great. Food was amazing. Our server was gracious enough to wrap up our dessert to enjoy later at our hotel. We had a very romantic evening. We got an amazing evening and we left a 40% tip because our evening was that amazing. Pros: Right downtown near many hotels, easy to find, friendly staff Cons: Parking is terrible and the neighborhood is ""transitional"" more

just average food and very expensive! Small portions 1/13/2009

If I didn't have a Restaurant(dot)com certificate for this place I would've passed on going. I don't understand why people rave about it. First, they charge you $18 for a soup-sized bowl of curry with 8 chunks of chicken swimming in sauce. No rice, no naan, nothing. Just a bowl. Must have some magic spices in it. Pros: ok food Cons: small portions, too expensive, possibly dirty in the kitchen more

Great Birthday Dinner 1/6/2009

I went to New Delhi Restaurant tonight and they made me a great special veg. dinner. They heard it was my birthday and brought me a free ce cream. The food was really good and the dinner was relaxing. The service was also great (free ice cream!). I had my mom with me and this was her first Indian food experience, the staff was awesome at going over the menu and making recommendations. We went with some of their suggestions and everyone had a great time. This is a fantastic spot to take a group for a party, they do a great job and don't freak out over big groups like other places. Pros: Awesome staff and food! Cons: Parking, but that's why God gave us Muni. more

Just like eating in India 10/28/2008

Having been to Southern Asia many times, I have experienced what true Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine is like, I have high expectations for Indian restaurants in the US. I have found that New Delhi Restaurant has gone above and beyond other Indian restaurants in San Francisco and the US with their authentic and irresistible cuisine. Everything is incredibly flavorful and nothing is hot for the sake of being hot. The nan bread is outstanding and I could eat the chutneys that accompany it with a spoon. Pros: Full bar, great specials Cons: Parking, but what can you expect downtown? more

Best Indian Food ever - including India 8/26/2008

New Delhi Restaurant has the best Indian food I've had anywhere (including in India). Amazing flavors and the right spice level combined with a unique menu and friendly, efficient service makes New Delhi the best Indian restaurant in San Francisco. The ambiance is of upscale elegance (without being pretentious) with amazing artwork by Indian artists. New Delhi has a excellent menu with dishes that you would not find anywhere else, for something different try the Balti Mongo Prawns and Paneer Ferezi. For drinks enjoy the Mango Martini Pros: Inventive menu, good spice blends Cons: Parking's a challenge more

  • In Short
An upscale choice for North Indian cuisine, this restaurant right off Union Square has a dark, wooden interior that opens past the full bar into a large, dressy dining room. The space has a vintage feel thanks to lots of old wood and exposed brick. Dishes include traditional Indian fare--curries, tandoori, rogan josh, tikka masala--and more exotic choices such as kofta shah jahani (stuffed meatballs) and murg akbari (spiced chicken with dried fruits).
