If you fancy tiny, overpriced drinks and anorexic portions, give em a whirl 12/13/2008

I went here alone the other night and ordered two margaritas and the tamale entree. The margaritas were about the size of a dixie cup poured over ice and the tamales, while tasty, were two solitary blobs on a lonely plate. No chips, no salsa, just two measly tamales and a couple wimpy margaritas. Total cost (ding-ding-ding) $48 dollars (incl tip). I would have been better off tracking down one of those tamale vendors and making some don julio margaritas at home. Ignore the trendy hype, save your money and head on over to an authentic taqueria. Pros: Clean, Nice wait staff Cons: Everything else more

Now That's What I'm Talkin About! 6/5/2008

First I went to Mexico DF for drinks after work. The $5 margaritas and mojitos are killer, and when happy hour ended I didn't mind paying full price one bit. I haven't had a margarita that good since The Red Cabbage in Puerto Vallarta. The guacamole is wonderful - I especially loved the mango guac. I could have eaten that all night. But I moved on to the Gorditas and the Duck Flautas which were divine. My drinking buddy had the Huarache and loved it. Several days I went back for lunch on my birthday. I had the Torta Ahogada that melted in my mouth. My lunch mates had the Carnitas and loved it. Mexico DF is a gem. I will be back often for lunch, dinner, drinks - whatever. The food is awesome, the service is great and the atmosphere is so comfortable it's like being home. Pros: Food, drinks, service, atmosphere Cons: Parking, Bar seating more

Great all round experience 9/2/2007

A friend of mine decided to do a web search for an upscale Mexican restaurant and came up with Mexico DF. Pleasant surprise and incredible treat. We arrived a bit early to a trendy bar filled with people beginning the long weekend w/laughter. As we approached two smiling hostesses, we were told by one of them that being early would mean that we would be charged extra and she was going to pocket it! So she was thankful. This playful beginning allowed us to feel very comfortable and relaxed ? even though we were in this ?upscale? restaurant. Tables slowly filled up around us, yet our informative and personable waiter Tomas, made time to explain the dishes and make some wise suggestions. Some seemed unique with a tint of originality (mouth watering Duck flautas, ?lipstick? and jalape?o chiles fried panela cheese, and Cucumber, mango, and radish salad w/chile which had a great flavor that complemented spicier dishes). I am a picky eater; I hate beans. I questioned our waiter about substituting the beans for rice on the Sonoma chicken breast. He informed me that the beans were tossed in the mix of the sauce but would be happy to pick them out for me. Was he joking? I realized that he was serious and was willing to serve me a dish I could be happy with so I could have a ?great dining experience?. The richness of flavors made the dishes extremely filling. We requested to speak to Chef David. After at least 5 min. of pleasant conversation during a time when business had gotten extremely busy, we were very happy with this special find. The Flan was just right ? creamy yet solid ? and the Goat cheese cheesecake w/mission figs and grapes was flakey and perfect! Reasonable as any other high quality restaurant in the area would be ? drinks, starters, main dishes, desserts (complements of Chef David!) and coffee. I highly recommend Mexico SF in hopes that it will become at the very least a monthly visit for me and my friend and a SF established favorite. more

Upscale Mexican, Mexico City style 8/11/2007

Finally, a restaurant with the ""cocina alta"" or upscale Mexican cuisine long missing in S.F. Very fresh and inventive crudos (ahi tuna with mango), pulled pork tacos anchored in ultra tasty housemade tortillas that would make any Mexican grandmother proud, and an amazing whole grilled fish with garlic and herbs that would make Patricia Quintana cry - honestly, the best fish dish in town. Pros: Amazing high end Mexican cuisine Cons: Music too loud more

Incredible Food 8/9/2007

My friend brought me and another friend to this restaurant last night. The food is great, to say the least. We sampled about ten of their dishes paired with wine we brought and some wine that we bought from the restaurant. I highly recommend trying the salmon and the goat cheese cake, but all of the dishes were awesome. Pros: Great food, great service Cons: n/a more

Great Mexican food near Embarcadero! 7/23/2007

As a member of the YMCA on Steuart Street, I passed by this place numerous times on my way to the gym - hoping to eat here soon. Finally made a reservation for a Saturday night and boy oh boy, we absolutely loved it! The service was pretty good - could have been a bit more attentive but the food was outstanding. We had 3 tapas the ahi ceviche, carnitas tacos and quesadillas - each had great, tastly flavors. We especially liked the quesadillas as they were filled with cheese, beef and squash blossoms - YUM! One note - the quesadillas served looked more like empenada - but we didn't care. Also had margaritas and the house guacamole with chips...both very good as well. We can't wait to come back and try more items off the menu!! Pros: Great location, excellent food/flavors, friendly staff Cons: table service could have been a bit more attentive (for drink refills) more
