Curly Hair Experts! 10/11/2006

I've been going to Mes Amis for several years now. My hair has never been happier! After many horrendous haircuts with stylists claiming to understand naturally curly hair Gene Hayes was recommended to me and my hair is in love. The razor cut is phenomenal and with a little help from the Redken product any curly haired person should have stashes of Spin Control it can't get any better. Check out Mes Amis and you'll never have to deal with a bad cut or tacky highlights again! more

HUGH-best colorist in the city 9/28/2006

I am new to San Francisco from New York. I thought that I had the best in NY but I was wrong. I have been to Hugh 3 times now through a friends recomendation and could not be happier about moving. He is a master with blonds! My hair is shiney and vibrant with lots of depth. I am getting so many compliments! more

Perfection 9/9/2006

Gene is brilliant. Amazing. Extraordinary. You couldn't pay me to go to anyone else. Seriously. I particularly love that he takes the time to talk to me and get a thorough understanding of the exact look/style/cut I am hoping to achieve. And I am always 150% pleased with the results he gives me. 156%, even. What would I do without Gene? I hope, for my hair's sake, I never have to find out. more

Eye Candy... 7/27/2006

Gene is one and he can make you one too! (Sorry, he's gay and taken everyone.) I went to him with stringy over-processed and brassy highlighted hair, and left with a shiny sophisticated coif. He really helped dry my tears and made me feel at home for this NYC-princess. Try him. He doesn't disappoint. I would have plenty to rave about just mentioning my too-good-to-be-true perfect shade of blonde that Hugh achieves every time I visit. But then I would be neglecting to mention all of the other fantastic aspects of a session with Hugh- smart, spot-on tips and advice; fashion savvy; entertainment (ask him about Courtney Love or Michael Ciccone- he always has funny anecdotes); and overall the highest quality and level of service. I have been totally obssesed with perfecting my hair colour for years. Thankfully for me , so is Hugh.His philosophy of working with your skintone ,facial features and hair type to create an overall end result is nothing less than an art form.He always reminds me of what really works and what doesn't with a healthy dose of honesty wrapped in wit. Perfect Movie Star Blond Hair is what I got today from Hugh at Mes Ami 193. The best color I've had since my natural blond at age 7 or 8. Perfect sandy blond. My 7 week touchup appointment is already scheduled and I'm pretty sure this is the beginning of a long and happy addiction. I LOVE my hair and that hardly every happens. Nothing compares to Hugh. The hair cut was also amazing and the no nonsense professional attitude is refreshing. Twice the usual price, but 10 times better than the usual job, so it's worth it. I'm so happy I found him. Great Place! 3/14/2006

Hugh helped me pick a hairstyle that complimented the shape of my face, hid my large forehead, and accentuated my long neck--he's so awesome! Unlike many stylists Hugh is not chatty--rather he concentrates on his work. Hugh's cut start at $75 and it's so WORTH it! It would be a cold day in hell before I stopped going to Gene at Mes Amis. He's a miracle worker with my unruly hair and I LOVE him. (I spent the first half of my life thinking I had bad hair, when really I just had a bad stylist.) He's talented, so much fun, and great about customer service and PR. He knows everybody and hooks us all up as friends, chatty kathys, or potential business contacts, and he treats us all like we're his very best friends. He's imaginative with cuts and amazing with color. I've recommended him to more people than I can count and almost every last person I know goes to him. So if it's time for a new salon, fabulous hair, and fun in a salon chair, RUN - don't walk - to Mes Amis!!! Pros: Friendly, Professional, Affordable more

Gene ROCKS 1/29/2006

After going to several hair stylists and not finding one I was comfortable with... I visited Mes Amis. Gene spent some times listening to what i wanted, my current hair issues, and keenly looking at a bad picture that I had brought in of what i wanted. Gene summarized what I was looking for, told me exactly what he was going to do and then confirmed what length I wanted. Once he was done with his magic, I probably had the best haircut I've had in years! I highly recommend Gene for his talent, patience and easy going, non-fru fru attitude. Gene knows what you want even before you do! 1/8/2006

I came to Gene for a haircut, without a style in mind. He patiently went through magazines with me, and was attentive to my opinions. He also was honest and told me when a haircut wouldn't work for me. In the end he gave me a haircut that looked great at all times. It even looks good when I just roll out of bed. And the price was lower than most upscale salons of the same caliber. I will definitely come there again. Pros: highly skilled staff more

I drove up from SLO and he was worth it 11/23/2005

He selects the perfect shades for your hair, and not necessarily blonde. I came in with an inch of grey roots and a mop of reddish brunette overprocessed hair and left with a sophisticated taupe, linen color highlighted with platinum. It was the color of my hair when I was in highschool (a long long time ago). The cuts he made (and didn't charge for) made a similarly remarkable difference. Subtle but profound. I lost no length, but got a lot in highlighting my facial features and low-upkeep. How can he not be hosting some Hair Talk Show (or whatever the best hair colorist/stylist should do) I don't know. But I was thrilled when I called last Thursday and he answered the shop's phone himself and booked me into a cancelled appointment for Saturday at 1:00 pm! Pros: Shade Selection more

hugh is an amazing colorist! after searching for weeks to find someone to lighten up my damaged and porous hair hugh told me he would try his best- i sat down in his chair with over-dyed black hair and walked out only two hours later with rich, highlighted chocolate brown, it was just short of a miracle. hugh brought my hair back from hell to a natural and flattering shade. more

I'm an Entertainment industry female executive from LA. A close girlfriend of mine has been flying up to San Francisco once a month for a couple of years now to see this guy Hugh McGuire, and after my final color debacle here, I decided to go give him a try. This guy is incredible; he listened to me and knew exactly what I wanted him to do with my color. My friend told me he was good with blondes, but WOW! My hair has never looked better. Another nice thing about Hugh: how many of you have had one of those chatty ""it's all about me"" sylists? Well, Hugh is the antithesis of that. He is quiet, pleasant and extremely courteous. So I guess it's monthly flights to SF for me too now. Hugh isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for, so in my opinion he's a bargain. I love getting my hair cut here. I've been coming for a few years and Gene always does *excellent* work. He's at once friendly, professional, and a great stylist.
