I love a good steak. I love a good steak au poivre. The steak au poivre I had here was not what I would call a good steak. I asked for Medium and got well done. The shrimp cocktail we ordered tasted like rubber and had a funky aftertaste. (Of course...why I ordered Shrimp cocktail in Charlotte, NC...I don't really know!) My husband's oysters rockefeller was fantastic though! My martini was also fabulous! We should have just hung out in the bar. \r \r However- one last thing...the next day I came down with a terrible of the stomach flu. Maybe the rubber shrimp? Alas, I will never know. This was my 3rd trip to McIntosh's restaurant. The first 2 times I had the Chilean Sea Bass which was awesome both times. But last night I finally tried the filet.... 13oz. It was overcooked, dry as a bone, and had that charred outside taste..and I ordered it medium rare!!!!! Oddly enough, the scallop potatos I got on the side were overcooked too... the cheese was bard as a rock and dark. If this is the standard, go to Del Friscos if you want a solid filet; theirs kills the one I had last night. I'm used to cutting into a medium rare filet and seeing reddish color and having plenty of juice seep out onto the plate. Not this time. I'll give them one more shot though because my other dining experences there were good. McIntosh's is my favorite restaurant in Charlotte to celebrate, well, anything. I've probably eaten there 40 times, and have had exactly 1 entree that was not delicious. And the staff made sure that particular dish was recreated to perfection. I almost always order the petite fillet, which is always so tender, juicy and flavorful. And as stated in so many other reviews, the scalloped potatoes are just devine. We also regularly enjoy the sauteed mushrooms and tasty asparagus. Probably 3/4 of the times we've dined at McIntosh's, we have done so w/ friends. And I honestly don't remember any of our dinner companions having a less-than-delicious meal. I love the restaurant atmosphere. It's very upscale, but cozy (NOT implying crowded seating), almost like a quaint neighborhood restaurant. The new bar area is beautiful and comfortable with sofas and chairs/tables. One of the things that makes McIntosh's so special to me is the truly personal service provided. Everybody from the hostess to the bartender is very friendly. The wait staff always seems to be at your table just enough. An added touch to the elegance AND friendliness of McIntosh's is seeing the owner stroll through the dining room, stopping to chat w/ diners at their tables. There aren't many restaurants at which I've had this happen. This is truly a top-notch, hands-on restaurant. It just can't be beat. I have eaten at most - not all - of the nicer restaurants in Charlotte. Many others are good as well, just depends on the type of food you are looking for. But I've never eaten anywhere that is so near-perfection with the whole package. And last, dessert. I can't comment too much on that, as I'm always too stuffed to order! Upon dining at other steakhouses around Charlotte in the past, i would like to say that this place is my favorite place for steaks. We went for my husband's birthday this year (2007) and had a wonderful time dining and wining with our friends. The trio of meats is my fav dish and my husband was offered free dessert, which he felt he deserved and enjoyed...all by himself ; ) It was a lovely dinner. No problems, no worries. We went across to Tutto Mundo's afterwards. The year before i asked the pastry chef to make my husband a special dessert and she obliged. McIntosh's is everything a typical high class restaurant should be and more. From the moment you arrive you get complementary valet parking (but of course you should tip), then when you enter the place really is breathtaking, there is a huge new bar and a gorgeous dining room. The service is excellent and the steaks are the best in the city, not to mention the scalloped the potatoes are amazing. The only thing about this place that one needs to be aware is that it is a high class restaurant and the prices do go along with that, meaning two people should not go here and expect to eat, drink, and be merry for under $100. For example, my husband and I do enjoy coming to McIntosh?s and eating but we would never expect to eat a 3 course meal for under $130 and if we want to drink as well we expect to spend more accordingly. For a fine dining experience, this restaurant is nothing special ? neither does it try to be. My husband treated me to a night out on the town for my birthday. Unfortunately, I requested to go to this establishment. For the price, I feel that our meal was below average. The food presentation was picture worthy. According to my partner the shrimp was really good. The yellowfin tuna was alright. The crust was not too great (too much black pepper for my taste). Overall, the food is very good, but don't expect to be full when you leave. I ordered the shrimp/lobster and there were only three shrimp on the plate and very little lobster, all of this for $27.00. Be careful, everything is a-la-carte, so get ready to pay for salad and all sides, nothing is included... except for the one roll they give you. We easily got our reservations for 7:30 Friday night through their website. As a steak lover this was by far the best steak I have ever had! I ordered the filet, while my date ordered prime rib. I usually cannot finish my plate, but this steak was so good I didn't leave even a bite on the table. We ordered the mashed potatoes, and they were the best we have ever had! They were the creamiest, most tasty potatoes. The only thing that I wouldn't rave about was my ceasar salad. My date had a soup that he loved though. Our desert was also amazing . We both had soup/salad, steaks, a side, desert, along with a bottle of wine. The bill was expensive, but not quite as bad as we had expected. This restaurant is quite pretentious. They appear greedy. They covered the fireplace with a table in front of it. It was 38 degrees out. Tables were uncomfortably stuck together. My wife weighs 115 lbs and felt cramped and claustrophobic. Food was served plain with no spices or imagination. I was surprised the steak was cold and overdone. The buzz word in the area is not that its gone way downhill. I have recently asked around since my experience. I live in the area. we were asked if we had a reservation. We politely said, no . We were seated at a small spot. The bread came out stale. My hearts of palm salad was not rinsed when it came out of the can. I could taste the preservatives. The waitress was cheerful. Almost to a fault. We knew something was up. Alas, my steak came. a 38.00 steak.....BROILED. dry and unflavored with absolutely nothing. Frieds and I had a magnificent, gastronomic experience at McIntosh's. The sirloin steak was excellent - both taste, tenderness, size and the way it was cooked. The triple lamb loin was great. Our service was a '10'. Can't wait to go back to Charlotte to come here. Congrats!!! more
