I LOVE THIS BAR!!!! Cheap Beer and you can SMOKE!!! OMG I'm in heaven. Not only is the beer cheap but they have a great variety!!! I was drinking barley wines for $3 and I didn?t ...

Worst

This place pretty much stinks, literally and figuratively. The fact that they still allow smoking makes it difficult to breathe, and I think every patron was lighting up. I came...

cheap, seedy -- great dive bar 7/11/2009

Stopped by here on a pub crawl. The place totally reminds me of some dives I used to goto in San Francisco. Dark and seedy, bathrooms covered in graffiti, but with an interesting crowd. The beer was cold and cheap ($2.30). They have .75 cent hot dogs and chili dogs for $1.25, but they're kinda nasty... But hey, whadda you expect for $1.25! :) Never the less, it's just what the doctor ordered when you stumble into the place at 1:15 AM! Pros: cheap, seedy, interesting Cons: chili dog more

full of overly educated, elvis costello style drunks 4/29/2009

If you can't deal with smoking, rude waitresses or cheap beer this place is not for you. If you are going cause you like to smoke and like drinking good beer for low prices then this place has it! Pros: Cheap Chimays! Smoking! more

A Diamond in the Rough 10/6/2008

I LOVE THIS BAR!!!! Cheap Beer and you can SMOKE!!! OMG I'm in heaven. Not only is the beer cheap but they have a great variety!!! I was drinking barley wines for $3 and I didn?t have to go outside to enjoy my smoke either!!! If you?re not a smoker or can?t stand the smoke then don?t bother, I?m originally from Scranton so, this is a little place like home for me. Believe it or not there are a lot of people looking for a place like this especially in the City. However, they most likely will not be writing a comment on this page. This is the kind of bar that people find out about from word or mouth. No one in the right mind who is looking for this type of bar will be surfing the net. All the people who wrote lousy comments about this place don?t know what a real Pennsylvania-Philly bar experience is worth! You can have your stinking smoking law and I hope you all get 2nd hand black lung anyway! Pros: You can smoke and find craft beers @ affordable prices Cons: I personally couldn't find a con! more

Great for what it is... 3/21/2008

It's a cheap smokey bar. It smells bad. The workers are rude and scary. Pros: fun and cheap Cons: a tad bit depressing, too smokey for me to breathe (but I will manage) more

Never Have Been Treated So Rudely 3/16/2008

I will tell everyone that I know to avoid this bar. I was never treated so rudely. I just arrived at the bar and was apparently standing in the way of a disgruntled waitress when I was told to ""move"" and she literally pushed me. After that, she told me she would ""push me harder if I continued to stand there"". This should have been handled more politely. Upon asking for management, no one was able to provide any sort of apology. I was treated as if I was in the wrong...and I had only been there for about 5 minutes. From reading the other reviews, it sounds as if miserable servers are the standard here. Stay away! Cons: Employess who treat their patrons with disrespect more

Maybe just not my scene 3/3/2008

This place pretty much stinks, literally and figuratively. The fact that they still allow smoking makes it difficult to breathe, and I think every patron was lighting up. I came here with 3 friends on a Thursday night, and we barely stayed long enough to finish one drink. My friend and I went up to the bar to order a round, and were told we couldn't be served since our other friends were seated at the Ms. Pac-man table. Mind you, there were plenty of empty tables and space around the bar, and the service at the Ms. Pac-man table didn't seem too speedy. A grim waitress eventually served us some cheap beer, the one plus. The rest of the crowd was pretty seedy too. All in all, I usually like my dive bars a little less rude and smelly, but then maybe I'm not a fan of true dive bars. Pros: cheap beer Cons: smokey, rude service more

Stinks. 8/18/2007

This place is bulls***. The place denied my boyfriend service because his eyes are ""too red"", but they weren't too red to get into tops bar above and owned by the same people, and not too red to get into the bar. The service is rude, they are dirty and unaccommodating. It's not a dive bar, it's a c*ap bar and you should totally avoid it. more

The Bar where I learned to drink in a Bar. Pros: A slice of my ill spent youth; ah the memories. Cons: Mcglincheys stays the same; I get older. more

Appalling Service. 4/6/2007

The waitresses here are downright rude. The beer is very cheap, but it is just not worth it. It makes you afraid to order a beer because it will be slammed down in front of you by an unsmiling waitress, if it comes at all, and you are perpetually afraid that you will be given a hard time about standing or sitting in the wrong place in the bar. This place prides itself in being an authentic Philadelphia dive bar, but I have lived in Philadelphia for four years and never experienced rudeness like I have at McGlinchey's. My advice: don't bother. Pros: Cheap beer, decent hot dogs. Cons: Rude service, smokey. more

DO NOT GO HERE 2/2/2007

My group really had a poor experience here. We were visiting Philly from the midwest and were referred to this place for cheap drinks and a good crowd. When we (group of 6) arrived, three sat down in a booth, while three went to get drinks. The waitress promptly went up to the people at the table and said, ""If you aren't going to drink, you can't sit here."" Slightly upsetting, since we had literally just arrived. So our group vacated the table to stand next to the bar. We all ordered drinks, and then the waitress was upset because we were in the space that she uses, and they kicked four of us out of the bar. No warnings, no asking to move, just snatching our beers and making us leave. I and another of our party were at the bar, drinking the two beers we just ordered, while this was occuring. After our friends left, the waitress went up to the bartender and said, ""Watch these two, they were with all those others, and probably should be kicked out."" I said, ""what are you talking about."" Pros: cheap drinks Cons: staff more

Philadelphia landmark 10/17/2006

McGlinchey's is the drinking man's bar. Regulars drink beers and shots. The drinks are cheap, the glasses are hazy, and the atmosphere is spartan and dingy. It's comforting. Pros: They never stop serving you Cons: They never stop serving you more

Lager & Shot 5/5/2005

cheapest and therefore greatest. on the wall there is a large faded painting of maybe a guy and a duck in a lake. stare at it to pass the time. more

Drinking is the game 5/19/2003

Comfortable, eclectic mix of people intent on changing the world and, barring that, getting toasted like an english muffin on a bleary-eyed Sunday morning. Pros: Non-pretentious Cons: Hit or miss barkeeps more

Home Away From Home 10/18/2002

This is the place I come when I only half feel like going out. It's never too loud to hear your friends and the prices make it almost too expensive to stay in. The service is the surliest I've had in the city but hey, once you get used to it you are uncomfortable with anything less. The food is safe but not good, I mean, the hot dogs. If you had a few too many don;t hesitate to order. more
