Referred to this doctor from my family M.D. for acute back pain. My family doctor did not refer me to this specific Doctor. He referred me to a pain clinic and I was assigned to Dr. McCarty. My experience has been bittersweet. I am still experiencing the pain and have lost my job while seeing this Dr. I have tried everything from back injections to pain medication. Dr. McCarty goes from one extreme to the other. At first he seems to really be sympathetic and confident he can help. As the process continues, with no effective relief , he seems to act defeated and all of a sudden - he says ""I am not a back doctor"".. I knew this from the beginning but the way he said it was very cold. I am very paranoid myself regarding pain medications and the possible addictions that can occur. I went from a low grade pain medication to hydrocodone. The hydrocodone is not very effective but helps.. I have requested a pain medication that is more effective and Dr. McCarty just will not go there. That's where I was and I still am. Dr. McCarty has made comments that indirectly suggest I am abusing my pain medication. I have had to practically beg for medications that would relieve my pain. I know doctors must be careful of patients that abuse pain medications but I would consider Dr. McCarty as paranoid about this. I mentioned disability during one of my visits and he reacted with a lackadaisical response. Seems very cold to me and actually very unsympathetic to my condition. I have no choice but to continue seeing him at his time. I can assure you, when the opportunity is there, that I will move to another doctor. It is just too much stress for a patient when the doctor is constantly paranoid about giving you pain relief from medication.
