YOSHIMATSU WORST RESTAURANT IN TUCSON 6/16/2009

DON'T go to this tasteless restaurant. First of all, this place FAILED its health inspection not once but THREE TIMES!!! This information was published in numerous newspapers in Tucson and it was all over the news stations as well. The restaurant is one word: FILTHY! I was appalled when I actually noticed the herds of cockroches in the main dining area as well as all over the sushi bar (and i mean quite literally ON the bar, I've actually witnessed this). Other than the disgusting environment, the staff is unbelievably rude and incompetent. Also, after speaking with the owners i wasn't surprised when they were not remotely welcoming to my colleagues and myself. They were to say the least, undeniably condescending and extremely ill-mannered. I've also witnessed various conversations held between the owner and her staff and she seems very driven by greediness. All that I mean to say is that asian people are CHEAP and the owners of this restaurant want customers to pay around $15-$20 per person on a single meal, talk about swindling the public to pay for overpriced INAUTHENTIC japanese cuisine. People go to RA instead, seriously because yoshimatsu is the worst place you can go in Tucson. Pros: NOTHING Cons: EVERYTHING more

so so 6/9/2007

I've been here a number of times and had some reasonably good food and some not so good food. \r \r I went in recently for the first time in a while. A big problem is uncleanliness. I asked for two glasses of water and the cashier gave them to me while holding the glasses from the top, with fingers around the parts that you drink from. This made me realize that it's best to serve customers glasses by holding them from the bottom. And then the food came. Now I realize why most places bring food out on serving trays. The server didn't use a serving tray and was carrying the plate in such a way that her finger was touching my food! This didn't wet my appetite.\r \r \r \r \r There's a sign saying that a 10% tip is appreciated, but this place is pretty much a self-serve cafeteria. The waiters/waitresses bring out food, but don't take orders and don't seem to wait on customers. And we had to wait a while to order, even though there wasn't much of a line. It seems a bit silly to ask customers to pay 10% tips. I recommend the owner pay the waiters/waitresses more. \r \r The rice was dry and not very good (not what one would expect at a Japanese restaurant) and the food was alright. \r \r Good points are the atmosphere. I like the building and the decorations. Some of the food is good and some isn't. The tempura and gyoza are pretty good. The okonomiyaki (Japanese pizza-like pancakes) is the worst that I've ever had. \r \r more

Funky little spot in the desert 4/16/2007

Coming from Seattle it takes some darn good sushi to impress me. Although this place didn't impress me, I wasn't disappointed either. The sushi was fresh and enjoyable particularly being so far from the ocean. The decor is bright and authentic. Come with a group of friends because it can be a bit quiet by yourself. I'd return but probably not until I'd tried some other spots around town. Pros: Pretty good sushi, nice decor, friendly sushi chefs Cons: Little small, fish could be better, seaweed salad was tough! more

Expand your horizons with Japanese food and atmosphere 7/17/2006

Enjoyed the atmosphere and food immensely. There are apparently two restaurants in the building. One is a more elegant restaurant and the other is a more casual sit-down diner. My husband ordered and gobbled down the spicy tuna and california roll combo plate. I had the chicken ginger bento tray which came with a variety of things to try: green salad with some sort of soy sauce dressing (delicious), rice (either white or their specialty brown), pickled cabbage (tastes just like pickles), yams, fried tofu, japanese seaweed (I think. In anycase, it was tasty), and the main course of ginger chicken (nice subtle flavor). The casual restaurant has a lot of Japanese decor which was fun to check out while we waited for our food at our table. Order and pay for your food at the entrance. The menus have pictures and good descriptions of the different items. In addition, there is a display case with food models so you can get an idea of whether or not you like the looks of something you are ordering. We will definitely visit this diner again. Pros: Enjoyed the food and ambience Cons: Tables needed a little cleaning more

Great Japanese without the guilt! 5/11/2006

Now, I love Japanese food, but sometimes I feel bad thinking about all of the MSG, fat, and carbs I'm eating, not to mention the dent it's making in my wallet. When I go to Yoshimatsu, I don't have to feel that way! The food is fresh, very tasty, and cheap to boot. The menu is daunting, and they serve everything from traditional bento (box lunches) to ramen (not the stuff in the package!!!) and even okonomiyaki (a southern Japanese type of pizza)! The staff is friendly, the service is rather quick, the decor is crazy, and the food is always great. A MUST GO if you love Japanese food. Pros: great HEALTHY food, neat decor, attached shop Cons: none!!! more

I have become a regular 2/20/2006

Sure it is not the most elegant, cheapest, or even the tastiest Japanese food i have ever had. However IT IS THE BEST. They are not a triditionaly decored japanese place, instead you will find J-Pop covering everything! You wont notice the entire figurine cast of lupin the 3rd cast when you dig into your pork katsu bento. If you like sushi they have a intamate sushi bar just for you. ALSO dont forget desert try the sweet red bean icecream. Pros: tasty, cheap, FUN! Cons: loads of choices, deciding on an entree, short operating hours more

Best Bento Boxes in Town! 9/21/2005

This stylish resturant serves excellent Japanese food - the menu is heavy on the non-sushi part of Japanese cuisine, like bento boxes, and udon soups. There is a lot of vegatarian food. The staff is young and hip; and the decor is straight out of a cheezy anime flick. The prices are much lower than they should be, dinner for two with sake will set you back about $22.00. Make sure to check out their gift shop when you are there. Pros: Inexpensive, Fun, Tasty more
