Best

Love the new location in a new shopping center by Lowes on Steck in north Austin. It is chic and casual....

Worst

The food at Marakesh is consistently average, not worth the long wait, lack-luster service or the elevated prices. Today, I spent 25 minutes waiting for a take-out sandwich. Chips...

Wonderful Food! 8/10/2006

I love this place because it has such a relaxed atmosphere and the food is great! It's not the kind of food that makes you think you've died and gone to heaven, but it's very tasty!\r \r I would definitely recommend the hummus and falafel! They have so much flavor, eating them both is sensational! If you go there on the weekend evenings there's a belly dancer, which is fun but sometimes a little intrusive. All in all a wonderful place to eat a relaxed meal! Pros: Flavorful food, relaxed atmosphere more

Until I give it another try... 5/21/2005

I tried Marekesh this weekend for the first time and I was not impressed . Just one visit to a restaurant is not really enough to judge their food accurately. However, their beef kabob was so hard and chewy that I decided not to finish it. I hope to have a better experience next time... more

so so 12/19/2004

The place is cute... but, not quite what I was hoping for. Good for lunch maybe... it just didn't feel intimate enough. The food was okay. Better than some... but certainly not as good as others. I would stop in for lunch if I was in the area... but, I would not go back for diner... it is not worth the effort to get there. Cons: , food, parking more

Want grap leaves? Don't get it from here 11/25/2003

I'm a huge fan of stuffed grapeleaves and I was very disappointed when my craving was subdued by their overly sour and spiced rice that was used as the stuffing. Maybe it was just that one night when the chef accidently poured the entire bottle of cloves and lemon juice. I've never tasted anything so horrendous. Yuck! But their grilled chicken plate was delicious!!! Pros: grilled chikcen plate, good service Cons: indifferent host, grap leaves more

I really tried to like this place 6/1/2003

Prices were amazing, and the atmosphere fun. We enjoyed the ""experience""...friendly service, good location. However, after having just eaten last week at Niko's in Houston, my lifelong lebanese friend and great cook, and my many visits to Phoenician bakery, well..Marakesh falls shy of performance in comparison. The hummus was watery and bland (needed more garlic, but we improved it upon lemon). Very sadly, the pita is thin and insubstantial, (a supermarket variety?), instead of warm, chewy, thick pita you normally find in Mediterranean restaurants. My chicken kabob, spiced well, but so dry I literally choked on it. Lamb kabob paled next to the lamb shanks at Nikos. Our friends enjoyed their cabbage rolls. I loved the side salad, but rice was mushy. I might return for the fun and price, but for great food, I'll stop by Phoenician bakery. Pros: atmosphere, price Cons: food that falls short, parking more

Great Suprise 1/5/2003

My wife and I were driving around the city looking for somewhere to stop for desert and found this restaurant. We had some excellent mint tea and Baklavah. Looking at the menu we were suprised at the menu items and the affordable prices for a downtown restaurant. We'll definitely be back. Pros: Inexpensive, Menu more

great food and warm atmosphere 9/20/2002

We stopped in on a late weekday afternoon and discovered a gem. We had the lamb gyro and some baklava and loved them both. The service is great. I felt like I had stepped into some exotic Greek getaway. Neat murals. more

where's the taste? 9/1/2002

Ok...Marakesh is located on Congress and is near a lot of cool attractions. It's nice watching people and the food isn't THAT expensive, but I couldn't recommend this place. I've been to this place a few times and every experience is the same...ok food that leaves something to be desired. The Shawarma chicken sandwich is the best thing they have...but they sometimes serve it too dry. I'd recommend Ararat or Claypit any day. Pros: location, people watching, great service Cons: food more

fun to watch the avenue 5/26/2002

i had the appetizers for two as my entree. i wonder why the ""tabbouleh [tuh-BOO-luh] which is supposed to be A Middle Eastern dish of BULGHUR WHEAT mixed with chopped tomatoes, onions, parsley, mint, olive oil and lemon juice. It's served cold, often with a crisp bread such as LAVOSH. "" had very little bulghur wheat and a lot of mint. I still enjoyed it but wondered if the market was out of bulghur wheat the day i visited. I very much like their red wine selection. It is fun to watch the avenue passers if you visit after folks leave the downtown area from working and before the theatres begin. Pros: inexpensive, uncrowded, attentive waitpersons Cons: downtown parking more
