Great Scene - Great Food - Great Time 1/24/2008

I went here with a couple of friends from work on a Thursday, and the experience was great. The bar was perfect for pre-dinner cocktails ? very good scene. The food was excellent - I highly recommend the Tuna Tostados and the Hanger Steak. Dessert was great as well - and we finished off with a couple of the interesting drink at the bar. I highly recommend for either a date or a group - the restaurant is perfect for both. Pros: The Drinks, The Service, The Food more

Amazingly Good Eats! 12/26/2007

Happened upon Los Dados one rainy Tuesday night after work. Entered wet and hungry. Left satiated and delighted. What a find! First and foremost, the service was exceptional. It left little to be desired. The server was friendly, knowledgeable and was always at the table at just the right moment. Cocktails are killer - inventive, fun and most importantly, delicious. They have a great tequila and mezcal selection. You must, must try the tuna tostadas as an appetizer. Great portion size. Between the hints of coriander, the pineapple salsa and of course, the guacamole, it is a piece of tostada heaven. I decided to take the server's recommendation of the glazed hanger steak as my entree. The dish was grilled to tasty perfection. Flavorful, without being overwhelmingly sweet. (It's marinated in tamarind and coca cola!) Never one to miss dessert, the pistachio ice cream profiteroles and the churros sealed the meal. Los Dados is the way for those of us without amazing Mexican mamas to still enjoy real home cooking. Pros: Amazing Cocktails, Great Atmosphere more

Rock out with your GUAC Out! 12/17/2007

Fantastic!\r \r Went here for date night since I had heard so much about it and now I can't wait to go again! Romantic/fun atmosphere, terrific appetizers and wonderful drinks. We started with the mini tacos, some guacamole and the plaintain gordita - and we cleaned our plates! I stuck with sangria and the boyfriend tried two different mixed drinks - he loved both of them. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and even though we were stuffed by the end of the meal we managed to down a few churros...yum. Pros: varied menu, tons of drink options, FREE CHIPS AND SALSA!!!! Cons: It's on the smaller side and it looks like its pretty popular- I would recommend reservations! more

great for delivery and brunch 12/14/2007

i'm starting to become a Los Dados regular after going for brunch twice and ordering for delivery at least that many times. i live in the neighborhood and so it's nice to have a solid addition.. for brunch i recommend the migas and the cinnamon chips, very tasty.. the heavier migas is delicious too, but i would definitely say this is better for fighting a hangover than getting something before shopping or walking around. the cocktail list is awesome -- apparently there's more to mexican flavors in cocktails than tequila! -- and the service has been friendly and helpful. for delivery, i say go for the lunch special or the chicken enchilada.. the portions are huge for the price and everything always arrives hot. once it took about 40 minutes for delivery, but i think this was when they first opened, and since then it comes much much faster. haven't been in for dinner yet, but i will try soon and report back- Pros: lunch special, friendly service Cons: dark room, price-y cocktails more

great addition to the neighborhood 12/14/2007

been to los dados a few times under a few different circumstances, and it keeps getting better. the first time was when they first opened, and there were definitely some issues that they needed to work out. as i've gone back again, they've definitely gotten their wheels spinning correctly and it shows in the service and the food. most recently i went with a group of 6, and we sat in a banquette and had a view of the rest of the restaurant, without having to feel like we were taking up too much space and without having people constantly bumping into us (as some other restaurants in the neighborhood overpack themselves with tables and large parties suffer for it). the benefit of a bigger group: sampling many things off the menu. my group's favorite was definitely the bbq beef mini tacos.. but my personal favorite was the pork appetizer with the pickled onions on top. for entrees, i loved the lentil dish (i'm not vegan, but it's nice to see a place considering those of us who are and making something decent for them to eat). i wasn't crazy about the steak, but my buddy practically licked the plate clean. we saved room for dessert on purpose, and the churros were hot and sugary. the cajeta crepes (crepas?) were a nice surprise as well. we shared a few pitchers of the sangria.. and for the first time in my life i felt like a grown-up ordering a pitcher (flashing back to college days).. which was great. i've also had snacks & drinks at the bar and was treated to a lesson or two in tequila by the bartender, who also taught me that serrano chiles can go with fruity vodka (i've been back a few times for it .. try the 'chili palmer'). they also have delivery & takeout i believe and although i live in the neighborhood i haven't tried it yet. all in all i think it's a great addition. Pros: specialty cocktails, ambience, beef mini tacos Cons: small bar gets crowded, hard to get a reservation more

Good food, stay away from the Sangria 11/5/2007

We started the evening with a 'pitcher' of sangria: barely 4 glasses @ $45. (Curiously, by the glass, the sangria--still overpriced--is $10...so $40 for 4 glasses. Weird. Not to mention the fact that you can get a decent real bottle of wine for $45...hate to pay that for jug wine and some fruit.) So by the time the food came, we were ready to hate the place. But the food was good. Some of it (steak, fish) very good, and decent-sized portions for the price. Pros: Very good food. Main courses decent value for the price. Cons: Apps. too small. Sangria, which is pushed, way overprice! more

delicious high quality food 10/9/2007

The food here is fresh and you can really taste the difference when you compare it to other Mexican restaurants. I had the organic chicken enchilada that was delicious! Great guacamole too! My only complaint-my margaritas had very very little alcohol in them-at $10 a pop they should work on that. more

Best Maragitas and Unique Cocktails complement Exceptional Food! 9/28/2007

Los Dados is an upscale Mexican restuarant located in the very hip meatpacking district, and is well worth the price. The drinks are spectacular (you have to order the Avenida Muerta -- it's the smoothest, tastiest drink I've had in a while, and the cinnamon sugar rim adds the perfect touch.) Other drinks I've had and highly recommend are the Vanilla Bean Margarita, the Hibiscus Blueberry Margarita and the Pinche Bueno -- yum!\r \r The food is fantastic. A half-dozen Beef Picadillo Mini Tacos is a perfect place to start; sweet and crunchy and very shareable. For the main course, I had the Grilled Salmon in pumpkin seed sauce with a fresh corn tamal, and a side order of sweet plantains. The salmon was cooked to perfection, and the plaintains were sweet, warm and salty (a delicious combination!) For desert, I had the Crepas de Cajeta, and a taste of the Baked Brie (Almond, piloncillo, pasilla chile) and a taste of the Bittersweet Chocolate Cake with vanilla bean ice cream. I heartily recommend any and all of them.\r \r The crowd was upscale and fun, while the lighting and ambience was just dark enough to make our table of six seem very intimate. It was the perfect New York night out! Pros: Drinks, food and ambience more

Horrible restaurant 9/21/2007

Worst restaurant experience I've had in New York in a long time. The service was terrible - incredibly slow. We sat down just before 930pm and were not served any food until 1120pm, luckily just before the kitchen closed! Then, the food was horrible. The supposedly ""fresh"" guacamole was certainly not fresh (made at best that morning) and was watery and disgusting. The fish was also inedible - though my boyfriend ate it because his fish tacos were even worse and kiddie-sized portions. I wouldn't eat here again even if they offered me a free meal. Pros: In MPD for those who still think that's cool Cons: Horrible service, even worse food, overpriced more

Average 9/19/2007

Just an average restaurant. Good location, nice decor but my friends and I found the food lacking. We visited about 2 weeks after opening and maybe they hadn't settled in yet but they were out of several dishes (3 out of the 4 of us didn't get what we wanted). The salads were boring, the scallop ceviche was unseasoned & had a strong fishy odor. The lamb tacos were a little plain ( just the soft taco shell & meat even though the menu stated lettuce & radish it was such a miniscule amount that it was more for garnish than taste). The meat was good but the dish could've used some sort of accompaniment. The lentil cake resembled a dry boca burger. Our fav dish was the quesadilla. Nothing extraordinary but simple, fresh ingredients. The pistachio profiteroles were excellent, the choc cake was dry & the churro's dense. Although we were dissapointed we'd give it another chance as the setting is great and the service was accomodating. more

non-mexican eatery 9/9/2007

The food was lacking in authentic quality. Prices definitely are not mexican. Burritos for $15, Tacos for $16. Are people such fools? Only the atmosphere and cocktails were worth the experience. I guess I could have gone elsewhere and gotton some decent food. \r \r Go for drinks not the food. Pros: tequila menu, margaritas Cons: food is subpar, authentic mexican food - c'mon, are you kidding me? more

Loved it!! 9/9/2007

I've wanted to try this place since I received an email about it's opening about a month ago. I love the Meatpacking District, the restaurants are for the most part, very good with great people watching. We called 2 hours before we got there on a Saturday night (2 of us@ 6:45) and they accommodated us even though they had a fashion week party booked. Our waiter was amazing, very friendly and helpful. He made great suggestions to us! Although the portions are small, we were able to try a number of different things. We started with the Guacamole (they also gave us homemade chips and a flavorful salsa) and mini Pork Tacos, which the waiter suggested. The mini tacos are DELICIOUS! We then shared the entree of the Chicken Enchilada with Salsa Verde. It was very spicy but tasty. They don't give you sides, all sides are a la carte. We tried the Strawberry Guava and the Hibiscus Blueberry margaritas, which were okay. I would have preferred them frozen since it was very hot out (I walked in sweating profusely but cooled off inside). But they will be serving frozen margaritas within the next month or so. We had room for two of the best desserts (that our waiter suggested). The Churros and the Guava & Cheese Empanadas were YUMMY!! We finished EVERYTHING! Inside is a somewhat small & intimate dining area with a bar separated by a wall. Overall, I would highly recommend this dining experience! Pros: Service, Ambience, Food Cons: Somewhat cramped for couple tables, No frozen margaritas yet more
