(This comment is in regards to cookies only) An okay cookie, but not as good as you've heard. The cookies all come in the same size; huge. Not huge as in wide, huge as in thick. They are too thick. Almost 2 inches! It's about the size of a cup cake. This makes them a bit on the dry side since they have to cook longer, and it is difficult to get a proper sized bite. The ingredients are good, but not fantastic. The flavors are unoriginal. In all, they are just sort of an odd, big-assed cookie that costs about $5. more

The cookies here are amazing! 1/8/2012

I heard about this place on tv a while back. Anyway, i finally stopped in and picked up a dozen. they were expensive as hell, but they were the best tasting confections i've had in a long time. worth every penny! more

Levain Bakery 3/25/2011

COOKIE COOKIE COOKIE is what you will be saying once eating one of Levain Bakery's famous treat.\r This is literally where the cookie monster lives an eats. This bakery has a pretty big cookie and it will leave you satisfied.\r Residing in the Upper West Side Levain Bakery is an upscale cafe with little to no decor creating a very modern and upscale look.\r This is a true bakery where the most important thing is the food. With a view from the open kitchen, passerby's can see that freshness is a top priority.\r Levain Bakery is an amazing bakery that plays on the cliche ""ingredients first."" more

Good cookies 4/6/2010

My sister is an absolutely cookie fanatic, so when I heard about this bakery, I had to try it out (even though it was all the way on the west side, and i lived in the east village). I was not disappointed. The cookies are opposite of Jacque Torres - which is a couple blocks away and also noted as top cookies: where JT is big and flat (think Zaro's), Levain's is fatter like a scone. I've had the chocolate chip cookie with walnuts and the double chocolate with peanut butter; both are really good, but it's hard to eat a whole cookie in one setting because it's so heavy. I would not be surprised if each cookie had literally 1000 calories. I gave it a 4/5 because of the heaviness factor (the cookie sheet and paper bag get soaked from the grease almost immediately). more

The Best Cookie in New York 3/24/2010

Do you remember the first time you kissed someone? and do you remember the first time you saw Starlight Express? Multiply those things together, square it and you get how good a cookie from Levain tastes. At first, I was hesitant to spend the + $3 on one cookie. I mean, how much better can this cookie really taste? Tate's is all I need. However, I took one bite and had to take a second to realize how perfect, and how much better this cookie is then anything I have had in the past. more

Heaven on Earth in the form of a Divine Cookie! 8/10/2009

We watched the Bobby Flay Throwdown featuring Levain's Famous Cookies. Just watching them on the TV made our mouth's water. We had to go find this place and try them for ourselves. It's a little hole in the wall place, but that's where the best stuff is usually hiding! OMG!!! These cookies are absolutley the most amazing things I have ever truly tasted in my entire life. I am someone who eats healthy, but loves to splurge on the weekends and indulge...I workout hard and deserve it....this cookie is Soooooo worth every savory morsel! \r Their chocolate chip walnut is my favorite!!!! \r The chocolate peanut butter chip is a close 2nd, its amazing.\r The dark chocolate chocolate chip is so decadent....\r I only regret not trying the oatmeal raisin.\r These cookies are massivley huge and heavy...but they are the best cookies I have ever tasted in my life! Pros: Amazing, Delicious, Enormous, Savory, Incredible Cookie Cons: They are probably a trillion calories =( more

Way too sweet! 6/30/2009

I really, really want to love a bakery with such a great name as Levain, truly dedicated owners and an address around the corner from my apartment. However, their famous chocolate chip cookies are way, way, way too sweet. Everything ele about them is great--they are chock full of walnuts and other goodies, browned to perfection--but the cloying sweetness is impossible to overlook. I've given these treats several tries, hoping to get past this. Sadly, I have come to conclude this is not the place for anyone who favors pastries that go light on the sugar. more

The BEST bakery on the UWS 5/8/2009

You MUST visit Levain if you are on the UWS. Fantastic Breads (my favorite is the Whole Wheat Walnut Raisin), unbelievable cookies (I won't wax poetic as I know everyone else already has), and my absolute favorite: Oatmeal Raisin Scones. Simple, yet perfect. Pros: Nearly everything is delicious Cons: Small space/ no seating more
