La Traviata has the best Duck entree in the State of TX. It melts in your mouth and the flavors are outstanding. more

Great Italian Food in Downtown 8/2/2009

You can't go wrong starting your evening with a great Italian meal at La Traviata. They have a great menu with a wide variety of pasta and meat dishes to choose from. The wine list isn't extravagant, but good enough for all but the most discerning winos. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend the rigatoni with spicy lamb meatballs. EXCELLENT! Being smack-dab downtown, it's expected that the restaurant will be crowded. Don't expect to have a ton of space. But the friendly hosts and patrons will make you feel at home at this great downtown Italian eatery. Pros: Excellent food, great service Cons: Somewhat small/cramped more

Worth the downtown hassle 2/16/2009

My girlfriend and I went to La Traviata for Valentine's day. It was a total hassle finding parking, but it was well worth it for the meal we had. There was a set three course meal and each one was amazing. I'm not a big salad person, but even the salad was great. I had the beef tenderloin and it was so soft I almost didn't have to chew it. It just melted!! The desert. Well....let's just say no matter what you like, if it's sweet they have you covered.\r \r We had never been there before, so I didn't know what to expect. It's small and cozy, but not too small. It's perfect for a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary. I will definitely be going back and would highly recommend La Traviata to anyone who truly appreciates great food. Pros: Food was amazing! Cons: Zip more

One of the BEST places in Austin to eat! 9/22/2008

The mushroom pasta is so creamy it melts in your mouth. I love the atmosphere. Very ""Austin""... Can get a bit loud, but that is just part of the experience. Service is far above average and food is incredible. A ""must eat"" when downtown... Pros: Incredible Food, Austin Atmosphere Cons: parking downtown is always a bit of a problem more

Great Restaurant 7/29/2008

We decided to go for our first year anniversary. My husband isn't as big on Italian, but we both liked the menu. It was absolutely delicious! We ordered the crispy polenta for a starter which I totally recommend. It was so good! I also had the spaghetti carbonara. I wish I could make this. It was so flavorful and although I was unsure of the uncooked egg, I was pleasantly surprised. I would definitely recommend this dish and this restaurant. It is quaint and comfy and the wait staff is really accommodating. Pros: great service, parking lot close by, food Cons: small restaurant- better for dates, not large parties more

Loved it! 2/20/2008

My sister and I went for lunch the day of my wedding and had a great meal (roasted red peppers & goat cheese, mesclun salad with shaved parmesan, etc.), so we took a bunch of family back the next night and had another wonderful meal. My husband's veal with a white truffle sauce was amazing! Nice atmosphere, good service, great wine list, and fantastic food...definitely recommend it! more

Absolutely Delicious 1/17/2008

It was our anniversary so we were hoping for a nice evening and La Traviata definetly delivered. Our reservations were for 6 but we arived early at 530 and they promptly seated us. We had a nice little table for two. The watiter quickly came to te... Read morell us of the specials, and help us pick out a glass of vino, and a few appitizers. he crispy polenta was all I had read about on other reviews the crisp outside with the creamy inside sitting in a creamy pungent gorgonzola suace was heavenly and perfect for such a cold day. The prosciutto and parmasean was elegant and another must try when dinning here. For the entrees my wife got the spaghetti bolognesse, which made her moan through the meal, and I tore into the osso buco, the roast was so tender I never picked up my knife rather all was needed was to flake tender juicey peicesd off with my fork run it around the garlicy creamy polenta and enjoy. As for the wait staff, they were there when we need and invisible when we wanted time alone. We never found ourselves waiting for anything. So if your palate con only handle the over salted foods of the chain italian restraunts, and your idea of good service must include a ADHD caffiene hped up flare wearer who squats at your table so eagerto fawn over you I would suggest TGIF or Olive Garden, but if you want to try an elegant marriage of earthy, bold flavors, and a classy dinning staff this restraunt is a must. My wife and I both look forward to our return visit.\r \r Pros: Food, atmosphere, food, price Cons: could get loud if restraunt was full, suggestion, make dinner our first stop of the evening, go early more

Horrible Service, Great food 10/19/2007

The food was delcious but the service was horrible! I would definetly have recommended the restaurant had it not been for the HORRIBLE service .The blonde waitress that we had pay no attention to us and blew us off most of the time. She only had 2 other tables and gave them 85% more service. She judged us because we looked like college students so she probably figured she would not get a good tip. But never judge a book by its cover. I would love to go back because the food was wonderful, but I probably wont becuase of the service. I would not recommed this restaurant. more

Anyone open for Italian? 8/11/2007

This is a great restaurant in Austin. It is Italian with a Congress Avenue wash. The food is surprisingly good. Lunch is easy on the pocketbook. How nice it is not to have another Italian restaurant from a cookie-cutter mold with food prepared on a pound of butter. What is interesting about this restaurant is that it has old time charm (okay a hundred some years) without the Welcome-to-Paris, Give-us-what-you've-got- in-your-wallet- so-that-you-can leave-hungry. Like many of the commercial properties on Congress Ave, the space is narrow: Hats off to the decorators' use of paint, mirrors, and a bar to give the restaurant a great start. Add in clientele and the pursuant conversation and you've got an interesting beginning. But the key is definitely in the surprisingly consistent excellence of the food. God bless Texas or the Italian-capable cook who took up residence.\r Okay. I like this restaurant; it made the list of where to bring visiting friends, business associates or coworkers for a rejuvenating midday meal.\r Good value, delicious food, great atmosphere (though it does get loud mid-day.) Pros: Get in early-to chose your seat Cons: Does get loud when at capacity: acoustics off the wall. more

Finally! Good Italian food in Austin! 12/11/2006

Wonderful Italian dishes, and I loved the atmosphere. It is a bit busy and slightly loud, but that's what gives it its hopping vibe. They have a good wine list, but the service could use some improvement. I'm just excited that I found another rarity to Austin...a good Italian restaurant besides Vespaio. Pros: Great dishes and atmosphere Cons: Slightly lacking service more

Great food, but lackadaisical service 8/24/2006

For years this had been one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. The food is almost always excellent and until the past year the service was also. The service now is quite awful. The past few times my husband and I have gone we have been disappointed. The staff is not very knowledgeable about wine and gets testy when asked for fresh ground pepper. I felt pressured to buy the most expensive wine to simply increase the bill and therefore the tip. There was no reasoning of why it was better with our choices, just the explanation that it is better than the others. I am very sad to say I wont be back unless the staff becomes what it should be. The impeccable food and good wine list is ruined by inattentive and/or snotty wait staff. Pros: Food Cons: Service more

Delicious 4/7/2006

I don't like the atmosphere much - it's a bit noisy with a trendy feel - but the food is so delicious that I think it's my favorite Italian restaurant in Austin anyway. I've been here four times and none of my entrees has been less than spectacular. The carbonara was memorable. The appetizers have been less so but still good. Pros: food Cons: atmosphere more

Wonderful Downtown Lunch Spot 2/7/2006

I discovered La Traviata late last year, and I have been a frequent visitor since! Lunch seating is never a problem, and the food is INCREDIBLE. For something light, I would highly recommend either of the sandwiches on the lunch menu, possibly my favorite sandwich I've ever had. My personal favorite is the calamari pasta. I've never had non-fried calamari that didn't taste like rubber, but it was cook PERFECTLY. Great business lunch location. Pros: Wonderful food, Interesting Choices Cons: Cramped more

Chef Gilcrest is a Genius!!! 11/28/2005

We've been going to this restaurant since its opening several years ago. We dropped in one day for lunch and found our ""staple"" restaurant. When guests arrive from out of town we MUST take them there. The chicken parmesean is WONDERFUL! The duck is mouth-watering. The fettucini with mushrooms is so good that I often get an extra order to take home. My favorite is the tiramisu.....that's the stuff that dreams are made out of. Chef Marion Gilcrest is amazing! The staff is always attentive and the management is excellent! Pros: Chef Gilcrest, location, food more

Nice surprise! 11/21/2005

My husband surprised me for my birthday in June, 2005. And what a great surprise! I had the special that night with shrimp, scallops, and many others included. Pasta had to have been freshly made! Our waiter was great, the appetizers were different and light (fig brushetta), and the wine selection was very good. We enjoyed it so much, we had to eat dessert (lemon tart with blueberries and cream). A gem in downtown Austin! Pros: great food, reasonable, small, yet intimate more

LA TRIVIATA IS ITALIAN DONE SO WELL!! 8/27/2005

What a great night out! Not overpriced. The atmosphere is loud but warm- not obnoxious. The food is DELICIOUS! The Fig appetizer is a wonderful idea! Lamb Ragu-mouth watering! Calamari Plattanesca-seasoned to perfection! Nice wine list-we had an oustanding French White. Waitstaff is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. (I don't how they squeeze-passed each other in this little restaurant, but they're good.) We're looking forward to our next chance to visit this wonderful restaurant! Pros: Taste, Location, Staff Cons: Size is a bit small. more

Best Simple Italian Food in Town 2/25/2005

Spaghetti Aglio Olio is fabulous, better than we have had in Italy or NYC(we used to live in Little Italy). The pasta is always perfectly cooked, never over or undercooked. The Veal Picatta is some of the finest I've ever had and the daily soups are just that. Handmade daily, delicious and savory. The Profiteroles with ice cream and chocolate sauce is wonderful. The atmoshpere is sophisticated, intimate, and unpretentious. It is not generic, large, an dimpersonal, like so many restaurants in Austin. My only complaint, and it is a small but necessary detail, is the salami we were served last night with our appetizer was very low quality, sub-standerd even to the hard salami that Oscar Mayer sells in places like HEB! I would expect to be served a nice Sopressata, or Mastro salami for 4 thin sliceseving and $6.00 price. more

Drunk Owners 7/9/2004

I work downtown and have been to this place for lunch and dinner on numerous occasions. The food is decent Italian and well priced, but the waitstaff and mangement seem to be often disorganized and under the influence of their vino. Pros: location, location, location more

great italian for austin 4/6/2004

my husband and i tried la traviata for the first time tonight. great urban ambiance, quite romantic. the prosciutto di palma was wonderful. the spaghetti aglio olio was excellent- esp paired with the tommassi pino grigio. will probably come again. (the server was very knowledgable and helpful) Pros: food, service, ambiance Cons: , noisy more

GREAT Food HORRIBLE noise 10/25/2003

The food was great. Had to wait a while to get it, but overall it was excellent. Our waitress was very nice as well. The MAJOR problem with this place is how loud it is. The room is very narrow. One side of the room has a stone wall which makes for horrible acoustics. We had to yell to have a conversation, and we could barely hear the waitress. Plus some mornon across from us was on his phone the whole time yapping like an idiot. If they hung some rugs or paintings...or simply put something over the brick wall, then I would consider going back. Otherwise just go futher South on Congress to a really great Italian place. Pros: food, romantic Cons: noise, noise, noise more
