Worst

The themed bar: it can turn out well, or seem a bit trite. La Caverna tries, but doesn’t quite make it. Clearly, lots of effort went into making this thing: stalactites, stalagmit...

Hands down the best nightclub in the Lower East Side. I would definitely recommend booking your next event here. Great food, ambiance and staff at affordable prices. Definitely try the La Caverna Cosmo! more

The WORST place Iâ??ve EVER been to in NYC, and hereâ??s why: 4/10/2012

Saturday night, 3/24/12\r 1) Bouncer had a bad day, was terribly rude and I think he may have been racist too!\r Apparently, he had an issue with “chicks and their attitudes” and suggested I had such attitude because I asked “why I had to get in line” in a flirtatious tone (when there was no one on line and others were just walking up to the door, getting their ids checked and going in- including my friend). That ONE question denied me entrance to La Caverna, at first. So, I apologized “I’m sorry if I offended you, but I have a right to defend myself (if I’m being called a chick – with an attitude). He then said “If I was being an ass to him, I would be an ass to his bartenders.” Wow, what an assumption to make of me, when I asked a question and then Apologized (in case he did have a bad day, I’ve been there too!.) Anyhow, I should have walked away, but my friend went to find the manager. \r \r During that wait, I watched this bouncer have most people get behind the line, and then watched him let 3 women with “light/fair skin ton” do exactly what my friend did –skip the “get in line part” and go right to the bouncer at the door. I didn’t think much of that, until I saw the reviews that they may have some racial preferences at La Caverna that turned away an African American reviewer for a birthday party. I guess I’ll never know what it was….oh well. \r \r When the manager came out and spoke to me, he didn’t do much to change the situation. I made it clear that I would be “happy” to post a review about my experience on line, I’m sure it would certainly help their already “not so great” reviews. I suppose he felt threatened by reviews and didn’t want me to walk away pissed, so asked me to please go ahead in and have a good time.\r \r What a waste of my time…..\r \r 2) Overly crowded, basement, smelled like sweat, there was nowhere to move/dance. \r \r 3) You better hope there’s no fire, you may never get out!\r \r If you’re in your “college party” days, this may be an ok spot for you…..but otherwise, I would definitely pass and go elsewhere. Based on my review and some others, you could be insulted by the bouncer or bartender or just ignored by your service staff. Don’t expect service with a smile here! Apparently, the folks that run this place have very low to NO standards of service. \r \r The reviews are so skewed; you can take a chance and decide for yourself. As for me, I wish I had not wasted my time. Live & learn!\r more

Fantastic Corp Event here 2/9/2011

We have been using La Caverna for our company's corporate events for the past 2 years. Although this is the first year I have personally worked with this venue, I could not believe how incredible the customer service was..\r \r ONLY go through Nick!!! My corporate event held approx 50 people. For our budget, Nick worked very carefully to fulfill our price range with our menu + beer and wine drink list. Although no one can stop talking about the steak in the office for the next WEEKS, my personal favorite was the calamari. YUM!\r \r The owners are so helpful and are very loyal to their customers. Big venue, dark ambience. Plus, they set up a back up DJ for us when ours didn't come through. La Caverna comes highly recommended. more

nice decor 12/11/2010

What a great place. Too many of these historic places try too hard, rest on their laurels, are relevant only to tourists. This place is still relevant and the place to be downtown. We did not have a chance to try the food but the atmosphere, the music, the crowd, the service, all interesting and real. Also cute girls. Recomendet for first date.\r \r more

Prejudicial when it comes to African-Americans 7/4/2010

I went over to this place to check it out for b-day party. It looked awesome. Great decor, check. Great service, check. No bottle requirement to reserve a table, check. I was going to book it then and there but the bartender said I had to call to book... So I call to reserve it, give the guy all of my info, # of people, time and at the very end he asks my name to reserve it. I tell him, my name. He says ""That's an interesting name. Is it French?"" I say ""No, it's African, actually."" He then tells me that he made a mistake and that they actually don't have space left that night. I didn't think anything of it until I retold the story to a friend and it dawned on me that he might have been lying because he found out that I was black. Still, I didn't know for certain so I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Then my friend says he'll call and try to book the same night with the same info. He calls and once again gives all of his info to the guy and at the end the guy asks ""That's an interesting name. Where is it from?"" My friend says ""It's Italian."" and they chit chat about Italy for a few minutes. Then the guy says ""Ok. You're booked."" That's when my jaw dropped. Blatantly prejudicial. It sucks too because it's a nice place that I wanted to go to. But I will never EVER give them my business. And you shouldn't either. Pros: Great decor, hookah, decent music Cons: Racist more

my friends bag was stolen there dangerous place 6/6/2010

We were at la caverna and my friends clutch was stolen by a fat latina guy in an orange and white striped shirt and jean shorts it is a nice looking place but too crowded and they dont put any AC on for a basement bar it should be much cooler in there kind of a safety hazard do not set anything you own down in there unattended you wont see it again Pros: good music I guess Cons: underground no AC bag stealing individual let in wet floors more

Spelunk elsewhere 4/26/2010

The themed bar: it can turn out well, or seem a bit trite. La Caverna tries, but doesn’t quite make it. Clearly, lots of effort went into making this thing: stalactites, stalagmites, somewhat pointy rock formations, and the dim lighting all luridly scream: Hey look! I’m a cave! The bar, sprawling and conveniently located over the entire middle of the floor, was accessible enough, and plentiful booth space gave it a lounge-y vibe. However, a snarky bartender soured my mood, even when the half-bobbing, half-standing crowd surged to an oddly remixed Lady Gaga tune. Also, the bathroom was inexplicably closed for at least a half-hour, and the line spilled out into the dance floor. Not kosher. Pros: Not crowded Cons: Trying real hard more

Decent looking place if you're into Univeral Studios garbage 11/6/2009

I enjoyed your clubs atmosphere, until I, and my party of over one dozen, were greeted with apathetic at BEST bartending and a sub par beer list. I then proceeded to get shoved rudely by someone, and in my attempts to merely stand up straight, was confronted aggressively by a greasy haired, portly troglodyte of a ""bouncer."" I, and my party, suddenly realized it was past our bedtime, and time to go to another bar that actually cares about its patrons. Good luck with your movie-set dramatics, they could have worked if it wasn't for your thoroughly inept ""security."" I hope you enjoy the fruits of your completely undeserved success. Pros: atmosphere Cons: everything else. May as well have had gum on the walls more

loved it !!! 6/15/2009

I went on Saturday night and it was great. My friends and I did hookah and had some drinks. The prices were good and the music was great. Pros: music, drinks, crowd Cons: over crowded & bathroom more

Great time on weekend... 5/12/2009

Everytime I've been here I had a blast. \r Despite the overcrowding and the mandatory coat check, its not a bad place to celebrate the night with good drinks, dance music, and no cover. No hassle at the door and nice bartenders. Drinks are cheap but they make them STRONG. I will definitely be stopping by again when I'm in the area. Pros: no attitude, strong drinks Cons: overcrowded, small bathroom more

LA Caverna 1/19/2009

Fun and funky over the top cave decor. Underground and made to look like an actual cavern. The drinks were fine if a little expensive and it is a bit much when crowded. more

Ok Time 11/24/2008

I had a decent time here last year for my birthday. I wouldnt have my birthday there again, but it wasnt bad at all. more

Cheesy 11/9/2008

Cheesy place. Cheesy crowd. Crowded. Not good crowded. With all the good places around here, give this one a pass. more

Unethical Management 10/19/2008

Based on the prior reviews, I decided to arrange a party for Saturday night. I spoke with Nick, the manager on Tuesday to make arrangements. After a thorough conversation, Nick assured me everything would be set and if we had any problems to ask for him personally. When we arrived Saturday there was no list at the door and my guest were told they needed to wait for my arrival. Once I arrived I spoke with Nick who said he would not honor our conversation unless we purchased a bottle. Out or principal, I find this bate and switch tactic despicable. 12 people ready to enjoy an evening out; they would have made much more on our individual ordering. I highly recommend finding another establishment if you're looking to plan event or night out. Cons: Rude and unethical Management more

Horrible service, but gorgeous decor 9/5/2008

Sadly, we were not attended to...at all...or acknowledged. From the moment we walked in, no one asked us if we needed help. Two of my girlfriends and I walked in for some drinks on Aug. 31st at around midnight and took a seat. There were only about 10 people in the whole place and the bartender saw us walk in, but said nothing. Neither she nor the barback advised us that there was no table service and proceeded to attend everyone else while obviously ignoring us. We were very disappointed, seeing that we had lots of money to spend that evening, and simply walked out. Being that all 3 of us worked in the service industry, we were more than patient (we waited at least 15 minutes before we left) and willing to tip well had things gone accordingly. Tis a shame! Pros: Nice place Cons: Terrible service, I can't tell you if anything was good or not though more

EHHHH 9/1/2008

Went here for a friend's birthday. I thought the place would be bigger since it's also a lounge on weekends. The decor was nothing special, just some cave-like walls with candles. The waterfall was a small stream that looked like something from a drinking fountain. Drinks were good. Food is another story. Most of us got the Penne dishes after we were told that they ran out of the lobster ravioli (20 minutes after putting our order in). The pasta was nothing special, it was like the boxed pasta you can buy at supermarkets. It was hard, it looked like it was sitting out for a while and was lukewarm. A few also got the chicken and strip steak and it was ok. It was really salty-I had to drink after each bite. Most of the time our water glasses were empty-the waitress never really checked up on us. The bartender was also in and out most of the time. When she was at the bar she was sitting there with an LSAT book which I thought was weird-shouldn't you NOT want your customers to see you are bored at work? Won't come back here again. Pros: drinks Cons: cold salty food more
