As a regular patron of L2, I feel obliged to comment on the nonsense written by dallascarter/djhives (clearly the same person). Pros: Great Service, Delicious Food

L2 is a pretty decent place in the neighborhood (which I object to another reviewer characterizing as a ""dismal"" or ""depressing"" part of town. No, we're not Rittenhouse Square...

Worst experience I've ever had 4/25/2010

We went to this restaurant with another couple who had found the restaurant on website and purchased a $25 coupon from their website. The restaurant had chosen to participate in this promotion, presumably to gain new business. We went to the restaurant around 8 PM on a Saturday night. The place was completely empty. The hostess was surly from the start, she seemed irritated to be seating us. The waiter took forever to take out orders, there were no entree specials and no vegetable choices. He admitted that ""Someone needed to go shopping"", it seemed they were out of a lot of things. The food took forever to arrive, when it finally did, it was apparent that some dishes had been sitting under a warmer for quite some time. The food was OK. I had sea bass, and it was tasty... but I was the only one who liked my entree. They had served me some sort of unpalatable starchy mush which was completely unidentifiable. When we received the bill, we gave them the $25 coupon and all of a sudden the waitstaff was in a tizzy. I could see them all shaking their heads, annoyed that we were giving them a coupon they offered themselves online. He took the bill back and returned with the $25 removed, but the gratuity included... for a table of 4. Not only is it not standard to include the gratuity, but he had already given us the bill without the gratuity. It was so unbelievably rude! He screwed himself though, I never tip less than 20% and he calculated the gratuity at 18% and we didn't give him a penny more. I would never return to this restaurant, and I would suggest you steer clear as well. Cons: Creepy ambiance, poor service, terrible food. more

Novelty 5/29/2009

L2 has been around forever, a fixture for those pioneers who didn't have a hang out, a place close to their newly renovated home. Yes, the menu is outdated, however, if you enjoy hanging out with locals, a night out with neighbors, sipping a cocktail, then try the bar. Pros: Friends, bar, music. Cons: Menu, if your there to eat! more

OK neighborhood place 5/15/2009

L2 is a pretty decent place in the neighborhood (which I object to another reviewer characterizing as a ""dismal"" or ""depressing"" part of town. No, we're not Rittenhouse Square, but this isn't exactly a wasteland a few blocks South!) The dining room decor is fun in a funky, crazy-old-aunt sort of way. I've had no complaints about the food, beyond the fact that the menu seems stuck in the 1980s and they are frequently out of even these standard items. The wine list is my biggest beef - a short selection and rarely seems to reflect what they have in stock! One night I went and the only white wine they had by the bottle was a Cali chardonnay. I've even had the waiter say ""Oh, I don't know why that's still on the menu - we haven't had that wine for ages!"" I know it sounds like I'm complaining a lot, but I still like the place well enough for what it is. If you stick with basics like the steak, or whatever fish special they have for the day, you're likely to have a good meal. Just stick with ordering mixed drinks instead of trying to find something on the wine list! Pros: Atmosphere, relaxing Cons: dated menu, unavailbility of items more

Great neighborhood joint! 2/2/2009

I like L2. A lot actually. It has a lot going for it. It's near my house, it's very gay friendly, and the drinks are cheap! The staff for the most part are very friendly and relaxed. (Thank goodness the old bartender is gone-horrible!) more

Cheap Owner 11/25/2008

We went there with my wife on a Thursday night the week before Thanksgiving so it was very quiet. Had drinks at the bar as the room was totally empty, then had dinner in the main room. I warned the owner/waiter that we wanted to use a $50 gift voucher we had been given by a friend (""restaurant dot com"") & selected to apply for L2 (strongly recommend to never offer such gift as restrictions are extremely painful). After a $120 bar & dinner bill, the guy decided to not accept our gift voucher which had a minimum $100 purchase restriction. He claimed the restriction applied on food only & our dinner bill was $80...despite the very average food (duck & lamb), we would have considered coming back to this neighborhood place but needless to say they will never see us again... more

Why is there no option for zero stars?? 11/12/2008

This was by far the worst eating experience I have ever had. There were only two tables occupied when we walked in and the server (if you can call him that) stood there thinking about where to let us sit. He then came back with three menus for the four of us at the table and never came back with the other. We ordered two burgers, a crabcake sandwich, and a veggie wrap. The restaurant wasnt even half full yet it still took over an hour four our food to come (4 sandwiches!). The obnoxious server never appologized to anyone but stood in the corner at one point after hearing everyone complaining and made an announcement to the room that there was a sudden ""onslought"" of people so the kitchen is backed up. Let me repeat, the restaurant was not even half full. When people started getting their food who came in 15 minutes after us and we still were not eating we mentioned to the A-hole that we were annoyed and he again didnt appologize he just got defensive and said its coming in a rude voice. One burger came out burt to a crisp, the veggie wrap came out and it included lettuce and zucchini, and the crabcake was mediocre. The other burger (which I ordered rare) came out about 5 minutes later, again burt to a crisp. If you ever go in there and see a flamboyant server with an earing RUN AWAY!!! Please let this place go out of business so we can get a decent restaurant in its place. Pros: Nothing Cons: Everything more

Nightmare experience!!! 9/7/2008

Walking in on a hot summer night with a date things started out OK. We were seated by a flamboyant waiter. My first dinner choice they were out of... ok, no big deal.... I order something else... comes back 2 seconds later, they were out of that ALSO! Now they only have like 5 dinner selections on the menu, so I had to order some cr*p that I didn't even want. more

Wonderful Surprise, tasty delicious food 6/22/2008

Our party of 4 had dinner on 6/22/08 (Sunday evening). Each of us had a separate dish: red snapper, Chilean sea bass, roasted duck, and r__k of lamb. The duck actually was crispy and perfectly cooked. The fish was not overdone and cooked perfectly. The r__k of lamb was prepared exactly as requested and the portion was larger than I have experienced in many other restaurants. Everything was perfectly prepared and tasty. No one in our party had a single complaint about any aspect of the meals or dessert. Our server, Glen, could not have been any friendlier or more helpful. Pros: Friendly server, excellent presentation, tasty food, eclectic interior....different. Cons: Street parking more

If you have ever seen the TV show Cheers you will understand what it is like to walk into a resturant/bar and have eveyone know your name. You are a valued customer and the food is outstanding. There is nothing on the Menu that I don't like. My favorites = Fried Calimari, Beet Salad,Filet Mignon, and the chocolate flourless cake is to die for. Pros: FOOD Cons: Parking- but where isn't parking in Philadelphia an issue more

cool place, not too complicated 1/2/2008

went here with family for my birthday. it was nice, the food was good. Not spectacular. the waiter was nice, kinda slow on specials- like he just read it a minute before. the sea bass was tasty. the menu is not too large, so review before you go. Pros: Ambience, sea bass, simple Cons: Not too many items on menu more

terrible food and strange service, should be 0 stars 12/31/2007

i'm all for eclectic, and the interior was certainly that, but we had a terrible experience at L2. Pros: eclectic interior? Cons: everything else. food, service, all terrible more

This place is rocking again! 4/10/2007

Had to re-review this place! Just was in for another try and boy what a difference. I guess the last was an off night for me. The food is back to the old high standards, which is very high! And the staff always make you feel like old friends. Love the banter between everyone as well, from the bartender to the waitstaff and hostess.....always a great time to be had. Definitly a great place to keep coming out to. Pros: Quirky staff, 80's decor, tall drinks more

Great Food, Wonderful Atmosphere, 10/25/2006

Had the L2 and Blue Cheese salads in the past which were great. My wife loves the Ceasar salad, it has a nice bite to it. The calamari is prepared perfectly. You can never go wrong with the Shrimp appetizer. The filet with crabmeat is also always a winner. When it comes to desert, you have to get the Mocha Divine ( a flour-less chocolate tort) it sits pretty heavy but it is well worth it. Overall this is a winner of a resturant, we return as often as we can. The Hostess is a trip! Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Great Prices Cons: None more

Nice for informal dining 10/18/2006

I've been to L2 several times over the years and can only say good things about their food. Tastefully prepared, pleasantly served, moderately priced. Great for casual dining. Pros: Casual setting, good food Cons: Can get somewhat noisy when dining room is full, service can be slow at times more

Not great 10/16/2006

Live down the street and heard great reviews... they all were wrong. The duck was so dry and bland that I was unable to eat it. The salad was ok... nothing memorable. DEFINITLY will not be returning Pros: close to home Cons: food was terrible and expensive more

Nice Date Spot on the West Side 10/13/2005

My date and I went out for the jazz duo and had dinner, drinks. It was comfortable and intimate. The server was nice and the bartender makes a great drink. The bar has neat sliding shelves. The place is small enough to be able to talk to your date and still hear the music. I had the french onion soup which wasn't so great but the 2 dirty martinis made up for it. My date had an average caesar salad. The vocalist and guitarist were fine but I wouldn't really go there just to hear music. It's laid back enough to head there for drinks and food on a weeknight. Overall, I'd definitely go there again even though it was a little far south for us and ended up taking a cab ride back. If you live in the area, do stop by at L2. The bartender makes the place. Pros: great martini, small and intimate, romantic Cons: okay menu selection, needs more jazz, nights with variety more

Try the Chicken Parm 2/13/2003

I can see why L2 has been voted the most romantic restaurant in Philadelphia. However, I would vote it the most eclectic restaurant in Philadelphia. The Caeser Salad was forgettable, the fried Tomatoes with Mozzarella were good, though bland, but the Chicken Parmigian was absolutely wonderful. My wife enjoyed the Shrimp appetizer and was delighted by the Pasta Mickie. I would definitely return! more

#1 in my book! 9/19/2002

I think L2 is definately the most romantic restaurant in Philly! Great lighting, great music, great service and most importantly, great food! more

Excellent food and price. 8/27/2002

The best duck in town! Great salads and appetizers, can't wait for crab claws to come back! Pros: Inexpensive, Great atmosphere, Excellent food more
