Kozlak's Royal Oak Restaurant

I was severely disappointed with this restaurant. For the quality of the food and for what you receive the prices are outrageous. $34 for two overdone beef medallions with some potatoes and no vegetables?.$25 for salmon with dill sauce and although it was delicious it just came with some steamed veggies but no starch. The service was horrible we had to ask for our check several times to several servers because apparently they were all ?sharing? the tables. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The service is bad and the food is not up to par with the price they charge. more

Recently we celebrated my mother's 78th birthday here, out of family nostalgia. The disappointment was comprehensive. The decor is dated, not retro (if you dined here in 1985, you know exactly what it looks like today). It's far from ""casual, yet elegant""; sauces are served in plastic cups and the chairs are Knights-of-Columbus-banquet-hall -quality. The menu is run of the mill and the selection limited - a New York Strip will cost you $35 and is about the quality you get from an upscale grocery store. We brought in a chocolate, whipped cream birthday cake (my mother's favorite, and not offered on the menu), and they charged us a surcharge fee of $1.00/per person, to be able to serve it. This is on top of having purchased over $400 of appetizers, wine, and entrees. Really, Kozlak's?!? If you're looking for mediocre quality food at high quality prices, from a place that will nickel and dime you, this is your restaurant! Our family, however, will not be back. more

We regretted choosing this place for dinner. The server apparently forgot about us. Then the service was poor. Lynn the owner was nasty to deal with, sounded an unhappy woman. The environment is very nice, food was good, but the staff does not greet,welcome nor do they care, lousy customer service. we don't mind the price, but due to poor treatment it was not a pleasure to be there, not worth it. Their poor service left a bad impression over all. more

Of all the wonderful places to eat in the cities, this is most definitely not one of them. Bad service, bad atmosphere, and an extremely negative and distasteful owner. I gave one star because it wouldn't let me give less than that. more

I was at this place a few days ago. I don't know if the manager (Lynn) thinks her customers are deaf or what, but she LOUDLY was talking very rudely about her staff, about a CUSTOMER at the bar, and about someone calling to make a reservation. It must be exhausting to be so negative! I seriously couldn't believe her attitude. What's funny is I've been here before as a kid, I was excited to go out to eat there when I did a few days ago, and I was telling people at work. A few people said to look and see if the owner Lynn still was there, they said they'd worked there or had a friend or something who did in highschool and apparently this Lynn lady is hell on wheels. Like, a total and complete psycho. I think its funny that she has this reputation that is totally true! What a miserable person. She must have a sad life. more

I've visited Kozlak's Royal Oaks on and off for many years. Unfortunately what I remember as a great restaurant is no longer. We (two of us) went for a special occasion dinner and had the wild mushroom appetizer ($10) which was okay, but with few wild mushrooms. I ordered the walleye with pecan demi glaze ($27) and he ordered the flat iron steak with a peppercorn demi sauce ($21). The entrees come with potato and salad or soup. Salad bar is $3 more. My feeling is for higher priced entrees, include the salad bar or price the entrees to include it. The salad that came with the entree was romaine on a six inch plate tossed with dressing and parm with croutons, very dull. The steak was okay but too thick for the tougher (but flavorful) flat iron cut steak. I was swimming in way to much sauce with so many peppercorns it was not pleasant to eat. The walleye had to heavy of a flour coating on it with a sauce that was more like brown gravy with pecans than a demi glaze. I think some of the cooks may need more training! The dining room is looking sadly old and worn. Duct tape on the carpets and stained chairs. Looks like the restaurant is trying to cut corners to save money? The bill for two with one drink each and two (not hot) coffees was $92. Overpriced for the quality of food and worn decor. The service was good. Kozlak owners please know there are so many ""great"" places to spend our dining dollars and make some needed changes soon! more

We made reservations for the 12 of us to have Christmas Brunch at Kozlak's. We were almost giddy because we would not have to do the work. How fun for us and our family loved the idea. Well, when the ""owner Lynn"" called to confirm everything, my husband told her there would be 2 more. She became so rude to my husband and he handed me the phone. The conversation with her was so awful, I just can't believe she can still be in business. We called back and cancelled and her response was ""That's just fine"". How could she ruin what we thought was a very, merry christmas for us? This morning we made new plans and I know it will be wonderful since Cozzetta's is catering our dinner. I hope ""the owner"" has a very, merry christmas. more

I received a groupon for my birthday for Kozlak's. We got there when it first opened for lunch for a Thursday buffet but the food was not ready. Buns were out but then they were taken away. Filled up on salad before the hot food finally came out. We had $4 left from the groupon that could not be used towards tax or tip so we asked to buy a dessert to go. We were told most people let them have the extra money...told this by the owner, Lynn, at least she said she was the owner. We paid $3.50 more for a $7.50 brownie. Got it home and there was a hair baked through it. GROSS! It also was not a full brownie, a large corner was missing. For $7.50 there ought to be a whole brownie. I called about the hair and Lynn offered to refund the $7.50 but only after a lecture where she made me feel cheap for using the groupon. I suggested if she does not like people to use the groupons perhaps she should not offer them. A week later still no check but she did call and spoke to my husband and said she would send a check for $3.50! Talk about cheap!! My mother and her friends have been long time patrons of this place but they all agree that the service has gone way downhill. more

My husband and I tried Kozlak's for our anniversary dinner and spent most of the night waiting for our server to get his act together. It took about 15 minutes from the time we sat down before he acknowledged us and took our drink orders. It really wasn't that busy in his section, but he struggled with juggling multiple tables. After forgetting the drink orders and going back for them, he was ready to take our orders. I said I would have one of the specials and our server replied, ""No, you won't and don't think about getting the prime rib either."" I would have appreciated a heads-up that they were out of our top two dinner selections when he took our drink orders. The food was excellent, but we didn't receive our entrees until 70 minutes after we sat down at our table. It took our server two tries to remember we needed bread with our salads and he didn't ask how our food was until we were done with the meal. After my wine glass was empty for 15 minutes, my husband finally flagged down a bus boy in our server's absence. And here's the best part of all...he had an assistant. There were two of them and it still took that long! more

Lunch has always been a favorite - recommend the Kozlak's salad with chicken. A nice place to have good conversation and great food. more

I made what I thought were ""coveted"" reservations for the Mother's Day brunch. I believe the menu is the same as would be served on any Sunday, but with the addition of a holiday, the price of the meal was increased. After reading several reviews, I felt confident that the buffet would be tasteful, well cooked, and provide ample selection to warrant the price. The ambience and food at the restaurant was actually very good. Unfortunately, we most definitely cannot say the same about the customer service. Our group experienced very disrespectful service on the phone when setting up our reservation. While this should have likely persuaded us not to go, we decided to chance it. Unfortunately, the flowers that had been ordered for Valentine's Day meal were not on the table. When I asked the hostess about them, I was told to ""settle down sir"" and was patted on the arm dismissively. This would have been fine as at the end of the meal I asked the waitress if I could take the matter up with the manager. Much to our surprise and chagrin, the hostess was apparently the owner. more

I have to say I go to Kozlak's nearly everyday for lunch and I love it. I have NEVER had an experience like the one mentioned here. We have always had silverware, bread, wonderful service, great food and at a decent price. I couldn't belive the seafood buffet during lent for only $12.95. (And it included scallops.) Perhaps I went on a bad night, but my experience was awful. On a slow sunday night I expected that I'd be waited on with some degree of competence. Unfortunately, I was a witness to just about every restaurant service error in the book. The food was good (no complaints), but nothing special. I had pork ribs and mashed potatoes, which I could have gotten elsewhere much cheaper. The prices are generally very high. Go there when it's on someone's business account. What a gem! The food is great, the service is great, the place is cozy and romantic... So wonderful in fact my husband and I used their room by the bar for the reception of our wedding! They didn't let us down! Everything was so wonderful! They were even able to move our 7:30 dinner time ahead 20 mins or so for us as we arrived a bit earlier than anticipated. The service is what impressed me most; very attentive and knowedgable. Food presentation was first rate, with an appetizing placement of foods and sauces. My party and I enjoyed a wide array of items; From poultry, to steak, to seafood. All were deemed very good to excellent. I myself enjoyed the Salmon Oscar, a large portion of very fresh Atlantic salmon filet blanketed with equally fresh crab meat, lightly dressed in a velvatine rich bernaisse. The side of garlic mashed potatoes were a savory compliment to the complex flavors of the entree. An appetizer of crab cakes with dijon aloui sauce was both delightful and well presented. With tables adequately spaced, a fine harp presentation providing background, the dining area colored in floral design, and natural and candle-lit ambiance, I would rate this as one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time.
