Best

Last February I took my father to Keens. The first impression was great and different from the others steakhouses in NYC. So many pipes, I asked about the history. A man in tuxedo...

Worst

ate there many many times over the last 25 years...love the mutton chop and the steaks but often it is just fair. Pros: great service Cons: just not that good

Average everything for above average prices 3/18/2008

First, the good. Keens came highly recommended by a work associate. My wife and I ate there last night, 17 March 2008. The atmosphere is great. It feels like a place that should be serving no nonsense red meat. We loved the old school clear light bulbs with the crazy filament, seemed as if Edison dropped them off that morning. Pros: Cool room. Cons: See review more

Great steaks, phenomenal wine, and tantalizing scotches 2/25/2008

I have had a lot of great meals in my life. I have eaten at a lot of ""fine"" restaurants but none have catered to my wants and desires in a ""fine"" meal like Keens. If you enjoy the best cuts of beef, the best reds, and the best single malts this is the place for you. Oh, and don't forget to pick up a cigar on the way out. Pros: Steak, Wine, Scotch more

good food, friendly staff 2/11/2008

We were at Keens week a go, and the food was good, service was exellent(server was an ex luger with a very lovely accent). The porterhouse at keens seems to be diffrent from the most of the steakhouses we have been before, but it taste good, desserts are huge and not so pricy for a steakhouse.Good steakhouse and i would like to go back any time soon. more

Great midday lunch! 12/29/2007

The hostess and waiters/waitresses were very pleasant. We stopped for a late lunch and we were not dressed for an ""uptown"" type meal. The ambiance was interesting. Alot of antique type photos on the walls of people in victorian/colonial times. The ceiling is covered in old smoking pipes...read their website for the history on that. I ordered the Filet and it was ""fantastic"". I have eaten at many steak places such as Ruth Chris and this was comparable. The dessert we ordered was a butterscotch ice cream sundae....TO DIE FOR(butterscotch I feel is a bit underrated). All was very reasonably priced. I wanted to bring back home some italian pastries and asked the waiter where was a good place to go. He said he would ask the other waiter since he is more familiar with the area. The other waiter came to our table and referred us to Mangenaros on 9th. Excellent service! Will definately visit again on my next train ride to the city. Pros: Service was top notch Cons: My husband wished he ordered my filet! ( I shared :) ) more

Good food and pampering service 12/3/2007

I was in the mood for a great steak, my buddy John recommended that I try this restaurant which is near his office. It was the first time I dined in this restaurant. We were a party of 3. All had a wonderful meal and a great time. Our wait-staff Mr Sonny was welcoming, efficient & professional. I ordered his recommended Lobster Bisque, Prime Filet Mignon (I had it plain, and Sonny had the meat sliced for me,) Keens's Creamed Spinach & Mashed Potatoes (creamy). Totally delicious! For dessert I had the Iowa Caramel Custard (Sonny decided to serve it just warm enough because he remembered I had mentioned that I was bleaching my teeth and felt a little sensitive, amazing guy.) John & Hedi both enjoyed their T-bone and Sirloin. They said the meat was very flavorful. Their desserts: Creme Brulee & Cheese Cake .We were very happy with the food and felt pampered! Would surely go back. more

ITS OK...GOOD BUT NOT AWESOME 12/2/2007

the Manhattan crowd is in love with this place. its good but not awesome, the hostess who acted like a dropout from the drive through in mc donalds asked when we were seated ""you suppoze to be sittin here?"" no i snuck into your restaurant, i tunneled underground for months just to get to that table. Pros: great history Cons: decent food, overpriced, rude uneducated hostess more

Madison Square Garden Restaurant MUST 11/3/2007

We were lucky enough to google this restaurant, looking for a nice meal before heading over to Madison Square Garden. We were seated promptly (we had a reservation). We sat away from the bar which was nice and quiet. Our waiter, Jason B, was extraordinary, making the meal even better. The food was great. The caesar salad and crab cocktail were good. The steak for two was excellent. The sides of green beans and hash browns were very good. The cheesecake a winner. Overall a great meal. We only wish we knew about this restaurant a long time ago so we didnt have to have so many mediocre meals in the area. At least now we are assured we will have a great meal when heading over to MSG. Pros: food waiter (Jason B) decor more

Doesn't get as much buzz, but deserves it. 9/26/2007

Keens may not get as much buzz as Lugers, Palm, Homestead, etc., but it deserves to. This place is a carnivore's delight. Though they tend to offer quality over quantity, the steaks are expertly prepared and seasoned perfectly. The staff is ok, could be stronger. The bar selection is very good, but leans towards traditional and lacks a contemporary flair. But again I stress that the steaks and chops are exceptional. If you are out to impress clients and the like, take them to Brooklyn. If you want to have an amazing steak, Keens is a place to try. The sides were ok. Pros: Steak, location, ambience Cons: staff lacked penache. more

good stuff 7/10/2007

Really like the atmosphere in this restaurant. The wine list is really great. It has so many selections and they seem to be so carefully chosen. Not as intimidating as I thought it would be.Steak was tasty and big enough. What more to say? I have had far worse in ""better"" places. I would recommend this place happily. more

Excellent food...historic setting...sets the standard for all steakhouses 6/3/2007

Keen?s Chophouse (now, apparently renamed Keen?s Steakhouse) is simply the best. We go there frequently and have never yet been disappointed with anything we have ordered. The beef and mutton are spectacularly good and the beef portions are so gigantic that we always end up taking a lot home in a ?doggie bag.? Little do they know that we, the humans, are the doggies. Keen?s is an unadvertised hidden treasure of New York City - unadvertised because the place is packed with people who have been going there within their family for literally generations upon generations. You see, Keen?s has been at it at this same location since something like the 1860s, when the Garment District was the Theater District. The place is full of memorabilia from a time before your grandparents were born and it?s all genuine. I want to stop in one day just to walk around and read it all, because it?s like a museum. Don?t miss Keen?s: It is a never-to-be-forgotten experience. One block from Macy?s and Just steps from the B, D, F, V, Q, N, R, W, and PATH trains (Herald Square Station, take the northeastern-most stairs out of the station and you?ll be right around the corner from Keen?s). Pros: great, great food, extremely convenient in the heart of midtown, like dining in a museum more

The Best Mutton 4/18/2007

The steak was good, but the Mutton was so flavorful and tender that whenever I go to a steakhouse now I look for mutton. more

Best Steak house in NYC! 2/19/2007

I have been to plenty of Steak houses in NYC and in my humble opinion this is the best one. The food (quality & portions) were amazing and the service was top notch. The decor with pipes on the ceiling gave you the old world feel that a good steak house should give. Pros: food, decor, service more

Love it!!! 2/12/2007

Love it, love it, love it... did I say I love it? This is probably my favorite steakhouse in the city. The service is excellent, the decor very interesting and historical, the wine list great and the food delicious! Last time we were there we had a slight wait (with a reservation) nothing that we really even noticed. We were in the bar pecking away at the trivia questions. We didnt notice the wait, but the hostess did. She came over and apologized that we had to wait. Then a manager apologized as well. Then bought us a round at our table. All that because of a 5 minute wait - that is paying attention to the details! Prices are up there, but they are for any steakhouse, but well worth the money. I would recommend this place to everyone. Pros: The Mutton, The Steak, Everythinng! Cons: nothing more

If scotch is important - a must go 2/4/2007

On par for a NY steak house. Good service and great steak. Go here because of the old school feel and the scotch list. I cannot emphasize the scotch part - the scotch menu is 6 pages long with some stuff I have never seen in this country. Pros: scotch list more

Best steak across the board 11/17/2006

Listen don't waste your time anywhere else this is the place for an amazying steak. The staff are so professonal and friendly unlike another famous steak house in Brooklyn. Check it out for youself you won't be disappointed Pros: Steak steak steak!@! Cons: can't think of any and I have been going there for years more

this place rules 2/19/2006

keens is old school great ambiance. the pipes collection and the fireplaces aren't your ordinary digs. the steak was fabulous and the prices were reasonable. better all around than wolfgangs or sparks more

Best Steak 2/16/2006

The best steak i have ever tasted was at keens. I got the filet mignon/lobster combo and it was DECADENT. the choclate mousse was also very very good. The prices are high but worth it. Pros: food, dessert Cons: price more

Great Double Porterhouse 2/3/2006

My son and I dined at Keens for the first time on January 31, 2006 and we were quite impressed with the steaks. The atmosphere is definitely Old New York and the clay pipes on the ceiling are amazing. Our double porterhouse was huge and cooked perfectly, with the right amount of marbleing and great beefy flavor. The side of hash browns was good, but small portioned. Excellent salad and cold, briny oysters made for a memorable meal. The bar is great and there are over 200 Single Malt scotches to choose from plus very knowledgable bartenders. The staff is friendly but our waiter was only so-so. All in all, this is one of the finest steakhouses in New York. Pros: single malts, awesome steak, atmospheric Cons: hash brown portion, indifferent waiter more
