Kanpai Japanese Steak House

Best overall hibachi restaurant in the richmond area! Compared to Kabutos, Osakas, Kobe, and the Kanpai over on Broad St, this place has by far the cheapest prices, best tasting food and biggest portions. The portions seemed to be at least an ounce or two more than what I was served at other hibachi restaurants and the prices were much more affordable than other restaurants. Plus, the food tastes great (he doesn't drown the food in salt and soy sauce) and even healthier than others! One great thing is that he offers combinations for 3 different choices rather than the normal two that other restaurants offer and he also doesn't charge for fried rice like the others! The only thing I would bad mouth is the service, as it's not as great as some of the other restaurants around but the prices, portions and taste MORE than makes up for it! more

my husband and i are new to this area and love japanese resturants we notice this one and decided to go check it out what a disaster.... the chef was a young kid with no knowledge at all of cooking he kept cleaning the grill with a dirty rag and the scallops fell on the table and he just scooped it up and the other person there said hey take that out of there....... nasty nasty nasty omg i hope i dont get sick.... i didnt even want to pay for the food i didnt eat ..... my husband was so sick this place needs to be shut down nasty nasty nasty our meat was rubber and my husbands steak was suppose to be medium well it was so dried and cooked so long it was chewy please dont go to this place it was the worst place ive ever been to more

Place looks great - that is the ONLY good thing about it. Went there at 7 pm on a Tuesday night - Osaka around the corner was so crowded we could not get into the Hibachi area. The menu here was considerably more than any chinese place in West End - Service was poor and borderline rude. Sushi orders were mixed up and served on wrong plates...when told, waitress simply said ""oh - sorry."" Edamame had only 12 pieces in it! The portions were the skimpiest I have ever experienced for Hibachi. Glasses were empty with no waitress around to even ASK for a refill. The dipping sauces were coagulated due to being left out all night - we requested fresh and it took 10 minutes to arrive. Too late though - We had TWO people in our party of 8 get FOOD POISONING!!! Seriously poor in every way possible except the decorations in the place! more

I went to this restaurant when in town at a convention.a group of about 10 of us went here for dinner. We should have clued into the fact that there were only 2 people in the restaurant when we arrived at 7:15 on a Friday night. The host was also the waiter and the chef. The only other employee was a teenage bus boy. While cooking our meal, the ""chef"" scraped vegetables out of the ""refuse channel"" and served them to one of us. Then, he accidentally put another person's lobster on my plate. When I told him that it wasn't mine, he scooped it off of my half-eaten rice with his cooking utensils, and took it back! In the process, he dropped a piece on the table. He picked that piece up with his spatula as well, put them all back on the grill for about a minute, then HE SERVED THEM ALL TO THE PERSON WHO HAD ORDERED THEM!!! We were all too shocked to speak. At the end of the meal (the woman served the contaminated food immediately stopped eating) he delivered our checks. She very politely asked him to remove the amount of the lobster in her combo meal from the bill, as she was unable to eat it after he dropped it on the table. He proceeded to deny that he did it (even though there were 10 witnesses) and then argued that he was mad that she waited so long to tell him that she had a problem. He argued with her and said he would not remove anything from the bill. He then said ""whatever"" when she was talking. This man is rude, and breaking numerous health code regulations! Save your money and health and go somewhere else! more
