They always fix it right the first time! 3/4/2011

I?ve been coming here since shortly after moving to San Jose in 1997. They?re fair, they?re honest, have always had a great group of mechanics who I trust and they always fix it right the first time. I always know that when I pick up my car, the problem is solved and I don?t have to worry about it. When John?s Bascom was first recommended to me, my office was near their shop but now I have to go across town (and sometimes take a bus home) but I wouldn?t go anywhere else even though there?s countless shops near me. I put almost 300,000 miles on my Lincoln and am doing pretty well on my Caddy now, thanks to John, Mike and crew. I?ve recommended them to everybody I know who?s needed a reliable mechanic. On my last trip, my bill was considerably less than the estimate they gave me over the phone. Talk about a happy camper. more

Incredible Service by Trusting Mechanics 1/10/2011

I have been going to this shop for over 30 years. I used to live down the street, then moved to Los Gatos and now live back in the San Jose area and STILL take all of my cars to John's! I would never consider taking them anywhere else. more

I will definitly be back (its a good thing) =) 11/5/2010

My truck had been undrivable for about 2 weeks and I unexpectantly had today off. A friend of mine refered me to this shop because I recently moved to the area and didn't have a mechanic. I called John's and they told me to come right down and that they would take a look. They also said that they would be able to get me home if I needed to leave the truck. I came in right away. My truck is a 15yr old, 160k, F150. They were pretty busy but found someone to take a look anyway. After a couple tests, they explained that it was likely that there were some pretty serious problems which would likely cost around $1200-$1300 to fix. The further recommended that I not fix the truck but instead invest that money into a new vehicle. On top of all this they didn't charge me anything because they said "we just took a look." Fantastic experience even though the news they gave me was bad. The situation with the truck was unfortunate but they were honest about it. They actually were even compassionate enough to make sure that I was ok and not upset before I left. I would recommend my mother to come here.... probably the best compliment I can think of for a car mechanic. =) more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO THIS SHOP!!! 6/12/2010

They charge too much and charge you to check their mistakes after you have already spent well over $2,000. They replace parts they were never asked to look at as they were never an issue until they touched the vehicle. My radiator blew yesterday as they replaced parts that were never a problem. I had leaks at all cooling system hoses after they touched my vehicle. They can not be trusted. Pros: NONE Cons: EVERYTHING more

No Higher Recommendation Possible 12/16/2008

Highest integrity and ethics I've ever experienced from a service business. You get what you pay for and they refuse to do work that isn't called for. More than once I thought an expensive fix was required and asked that it be done and they came back with "not necessary" for a fraction of the anticipated cost. Exceptional people! Pros: Exceptional honesty and skill Cons: None more

Great customer service 8/28/2008

I have been bringing my car to John s for a wile now and they have done a wonderful job each time. All of the mechanics are extremely friendly and willing to help find out what the problem is. They are fair and honest about what the problem is. This is the best place i have ever taken my vehicles to. I Also want to give a special thanks to Elix for everything he has done. And of course I want to thank John for his expert help as well. I will continue to come back. Thanks Pros: Everything Cons: none more

Honest mechanic 5/23/2008

Trustworthy. John has an honest business. I'm fortunate to live nearby him. When I move, I will still come back here. more

This is the Automotive place to go! 3/30/2008

My Sister gave me the number to John's Bascom Automotive over 7 years ago. Many of her co-workers have been going there for years. (Sorry) But it is not easy to find a reputable mechanic in this county. Since she gave me his number I have taken a Honda 2004, Honda 1999, Toyota 1984, 2004 Nissan Frontier and my precious 2004 Lexus. My only negative was 3 years ago when I took a car (Honda 1999) that I wanted to buy for my Granddaughter and having it looked at to see if it was in "good condition" and worth the $$. I was told it was good. Then it cost me $2,400 to get it "good". That was disappointing! But I still find they are the best. I have not been disappointed since. more

Didn't fix the problem 2/4/2008

I had a fuel pump installed at John's Auto for a cost of $266 for labor only. I provided the fuel pump which cost me $135.00, not the price of their suggestions of $245 or $495. I don't think the mechanic wanted to use my fuel pump, but agreed to. Afterwards the fuel pump was leaking gas, which is very dangerous. The first time I took it in (2 weeks later) they fixed it or so they said. The second time ( 60 days later) I received a call saying that the fuel pump was not leaking but that my fuel injectors were and needed replacement at a cost of $150 x 4, plus labor. When I went to pick the car up sure enough there was gas leaking on the ground at the fuel pump. I was told that I should have put in a better fuel pump and the one I purchased at Kragen's was cheap and would leak. They wanted $500 more to replace the fuel pump again with a more expensive one, less than 90 days since they put in a new pump. I took my car somewhere else. I had it fixed for $75.00. The mechanic said that John's Auto had used the wrong fitting and that is why it was leaking. He fixed it in less that one hour. more

Always under estimate 1/30/2007

Unlike some places, John's crew works as fast as possible. My labor costs are often 30-40% lower than he originally estimated. These quotes are usually pretty good to begin with. Pros: Cheap - fair - trustworthy Cons: Very busy - call ahead more

Avoid John's Automotive 1/7/2007

Parts and labor cost outrageous - they charge an additional 70% on parts they get from the dealer. Sorry, but I'd rather spend that kind of money taking my car to the dealer. Pros: bascom ave is convenient Cons: prices ridiculous on parts asnd labor more

Peace of mind 1/9/2006

Not only are John and his crew the most trustworthy in the bay, but they are always 10-25% cheaper than any other quote I get. Family members drive 50 miles to leave their car with Bascom Auto and we have been doing so for over 20 years. Pros: Trustworthy, Reliable, Affordable Cons: Call Ahead more

Best in the valley for me. 10/8/2005

I've used these guys for 5 years. I've recommended them to my family and friends. John, Mike and the guys will treat you right. Honest and very fair. Give them a try. Pros: Fast turnaround, decent prices, honest Cons: none that I've had more

  • John's Bascom Automotive is fully family owned and operated, and has been since the very beginning. John Rockafellow started the business in 1972 when he purchased a Chevron gas station, right at the corner of Stokes Street and South Bascom, where there it remains to this day. His son, Mike, worked at his service station on and off during the 80s, to later return in 1992 to work full time. These days John and Mike share responsibility in the day to day operations of the business. Both John and Mike currently hold Smog Licenses, and hold multiple ASE certifications. They both split their time between running the business, and working on vehicles. John has a long history in the automotive field.
