We LOVE Lucy!! 2/26/2009

I could never imagine watching the antics of Bourbon Street from anywhere but the bar stools in the corner of Johnny Whites Hole in the Wall. We were down there for 5 nights and 3 of those nights we NEVER left this bar! The atmosphere reflects exactly who we are, low key, smarta**ed, and close knit. The bartenders are good and the boys at the door are something to behold. However, one thing sticks out at this bar more than anything else, LUCY. You will never find a bartender better on the Quarter. Even if YOUR the bartender. Thanks again to the staff of Johnny Whites for making us feel at home. See ya next go round. Pros: The atmosphere Cons: We don't live there more

Best Dive Bar in the World 12/11/2008

Johnny White's is the best dive bar in the world. All of New Orleans are regulars. Some may come everyday, some once a week, some once a month, but when you walk in, you'll know someone or they'll soon be there.\r \r I've gone back after 1, 2, 5, 10 years and nothing had changed. If I didn't see anyone I remembered, the bartender would remember them and know what happened to them or when they would be in. In most cases at least one of the bartenders would have been there when I was last there.\r \r The reason why everybody adopts Johnny White's as some kind of home-office-gathering place is dependability.\r \r 1. In a lifetime of living in or going back to New Orleans, the one thing that you can count on still being there is Johnny White's. Businesses change or go broke all the time in the Quarter but Johnny White's just keep on trucking along.\r \r 2. There are no doors. If that doesn't tell you they're open all the time then you weren't there during Hurricane Katrina. It was the only bar that rode it out open.\r \r 3. $3 for a 20 oz. draft - during Mardi Gras!! Are you kidding? All, count them, all bars and restaurants double their prices at Mardi Gras. Not Johnnys.\r \r 4. Pictures and doodads going back 30+ years decorate all the walls. This shows there have been many regulars for many years and many of them, long gone, still come back when they can.\r \r 5. Then there's the absolute best view of life passing by in the Quarter out the always open doors. They also give the impression that anyone is welcome, anytime.\r \r I'm going back to Mardi Gras this year. When I wheel into the French Quarter, the first place I will go will be Johnny White's. Maybe I'll see you there. Pros: Staff, Prices, Regulars, Historical Pictures, Atmosphere, Location more

Greatest Bar in ""da 1/4"" If not in the world! 9/26/2007

No Need for a happy hour in this Bar. It is by far the cheapest watering hole in the city. ""White's"", as the locals call it has long been a tradition in the quarter for almost 40 years. Sitting at the bar you will find local bartenders, musicians and business men (and women alike), and even a few tourists. Stop by for one of their famous Bloody Mary's or some pony races with the bartender (they'll have to tell you when you get there). \r Great staff! Great Bar! Great people!\r This is definitely an oasis from the hustle of Bourbon st. Pros: Staff, service, atmosphere, location, open 24 hours more

New Orleans' Best Washington Redskins Bar 12/18/2006

Cheers in the Crecent City. As an out-of-towner, the bartenders make you feel like you are a regular and a local. The ""Hole-in-the-Wall"" location is a great Washington Redskins bar where bartender Lucy never needs encouragement to blast ""Hail to the Redskins"" over the sound system. Never had a bad time there. Pros: Great People - both employees and customers Cons: no food more

Open throughout / after Katrina 9/4/2005

As a neighborhood ""anchor,"" Johnny White's remained open under deprived (and possibly depraved) conditions following the devastating hurricane Katrina which flooded all N'Orleans. Johnny White's staff remained working, serving as able, beverages and hospitality to all managing to reach this lone haven. With delivery transportation impossible, neighboring/colleague ""hospitality"" businesses relayed their stocks, likely already considered an insurance loss, to Johnny White's who operated without the usual amenities of ""civilisation,"" grid electrical power, city water, city sanitation, according to a BBC (British Broadcasting Corp) Sun. Sep. 4, '05 radio news report covering the aftermath of the hurricane which crippled the Gulf Coast. ""Unless we get run out at gunpoint by enforced national guard evacuation, we're staying"" an interviewed bartender stated. ""We made it through the worst. Why leave now?"" [no explanation was given on how the interview was obtained considering land telephone and cell towers all were out of service]. more

A REAL BAR 6/23/2002

Everyone needs to stop in this whole in the wall for a Bloody Mary (or 6). Very quaint despite its surroundings. The bartender was great at recommending new places for us to go. We watched the College World Series here (HOOK'EM HORNS) and it was a great place to watch people come and go on the street. more

Dripping with Character 5/14/2002

This dark, narrow and smoky enclave of neighborhood hangout atmosphere in the midst of Bourbon Street's bacchanalia is a refreshing rest stop for aficionados of the grittier side of bar-crawling. Festooned with sports memorabilia and populated with grizzled regulars tattooed with the wear-and-tear of long, hard living, Johnny White's is as authentic as a French Quarter bar can get. more
