Easily the best facial I have ever had at any spa-hands down. I had the pleasure of getting a facial done by Jillian along with a few other treatments. The session was relaxing ...

I cant believe so many gave this place a 10. Makes you wonder?? This place is mediocre at best. It was my first time there and I made the mistake of ringging the door bell. The...

Wonderful owner & attentive during facial 12/9/2006

The Glow Skin Signature facial felt like absolute heaven. The owner, Jillian, is absolutely wonderful and knowledgeable. I have had facial experiences that have felt absolutely mechanical and cookie cutter. But this facial felt so different. Unlike some of the negative reviews posted about this business, I did not experience any redness or blotchiness. As a matter of fact, Jillian was very careful with her extractions and was far from overzealous with my face (which I appreciated!). This establishment is highly recommended! Pros: Nice, intimate, cozy setting; knowledgeable and friendly stuff; great products more

They really listen to you and don't give you the hard sell 11/18/2006

A few years ago I kept getting these "angry" pimples that would not come to the surface and were very embarrassing. I had a dermatologist and, in addition to her treatments, she recommended that I treat myself to a facial every now and then to help my skin stay more hydrated (dry skin was clogging my pores, which caused these blemishes). I looked at many places and either their prices were too outrageous or they didn't listen. For instance, I stopped in at one spa where everyone wore white lab coats and it had an eerie white glow to the place like from a Kubrik movie. Surely these people would look at my angry pimple and say, "No problem." Nope. Instead their focus was trying to sell me Botox. I left there feeling a bit dejected, but I had one more spa left to check out on my list that day ? Glow Skin Spa. I remember the first time I stepped into Glow. It was cold and rainy outside and after tramping around all day, I'm sure I looked a bit haggard. But they treated me with kindness and respect. They didn't look down their nose at me, answered all of my questions honestly, and did not give me a hard sell. I have been going to Glow for more than 2 years and I have been satisfied every time. Dana and Jillian really listen. And when I went to my first facial at Glow, I was a bit embarrassed about the pimples and blackheads on my face. They said that they understood my embarrassment, but reassured me that this was a place where I could talk openly about my skin to get the help I needed. Dana even said, ?If you feel another pimple coming on and don?t have time for a full facial, just give us a call and we can get you a quickie appointment to help that pimple go away faster.? Thanks to Glow, I no longer get those evil pimples ?- or really any pimples. I am moving to New Hampshire soon and I am really going to miss Jillian, Dana, the rest of the staff, and the entire vibe of Glow. Pros: Attentive staff, affordable Cons: Not all of the treatments are listed on their online brochure more

Mixed experience with different people... 11/11/2006

I used to go to this spa, but not anymore. The three stars is only because Keri did a decent job of my facial. I had previously gone to Dana for the first time, and the reviews must have gone to her head because she gave me attitude like "oh my god you don't take care of your skin". I left with red patches and had break-outs for the next few days. I got the facial for a vacation, and took the break-outs with me. I decided to go with Keri the next time, and she was good. Recently I tried to book an apppointment using salon master. Something went wrong online, and when I went for my appointment, there was none. It was a waste of my time, and they did not even give me a discount or anything to return. What they did say is "send us a copy of the email with the confirmation number, and we will give you a discount." Anyway, I returned home and realized that either I had lost the confirmation email, or did not receive one. I have never gone back, and found another spa. Pros: Decent facial with Keri Cons: Appointment mix-up, attitude problem, dissatisfied with results from other staff more

small but done right 11/4/2006

jennifer is very professional and courteous, has a nice touch with her hands, her massage was very relaxing. she did not at all force any products on me and i can't say anything bad about this place. more

best facial 11/1/2006

I loved the 4 layer VitaminC facial. I felt so clean and I noticed my skin looked younger plus the bags under my eyes were magically gone. What was nice was that unlike most spas there was no sales pressure put on you to purchase any products and Jennifer was a doll. more

Best Facial of my Life 10/29/2006

Just moved to NYC from Charlotte and needed a place for a facial. Found Glow through Bioelements. I cannot believe this is the only spa in NYC to carry these products. The staff was wonderful and I couldn't thank Kyra enough for a great experience. They are not pushy for your to purchase products unlike other spas. A small, intimate location. I cannot wait to go back. I really walked out feeling like a million bucks!! Pros: intimate, thorough Cons: none more

best facial...great experience 10/24/2006

today was my first time going to glow. my facial with jillian was fabulous. she is professional, friendly, detail oriented and extremely knowledgable. i am always skeptical to try new places, but feel fortunate to have found this spa. i have very high standards and am very picky, glow well surpassed my expectations. can't wait to go back for my next facial. Pros: everything- knowledge, professional, friendly Cons: nothing more

Quick and easy facial 10/23/2006

The facial itself and the staff were really great. I'm very pleased with results of the four layer Vitamin C facial. I recommend going somewhere else if you want to be pampered, though. The spa has no locker room or other spa amenities, so you change in your treatment room (or don't change at all). It's really less of a spa and more of an office that does nice facials. Pros: Efficient facial Cons: not very relaxing or pampering more

Warm Atmosphere 10/22/2006

Got a facial there during Spaweek. Although it was a bit of a mini-facial, the woman did a great job cleansing and purifying my skin. The spa is small but, very inviting and nicely decorated. The staff is friendly and helpful. There is a bit of a product push but, then again, there always is. more

Best facial and massage 10/22/2006

I have been a regular Glow customer for years (since shortly after the Daily Candy article). I am fair, blue-eyed, with sensitive skin that tends to redness--NO MORE. At 49, I am often mistaken for more than a decade younger and I never wear makeup--all thanks to Jillian. I've even taken my 12-year old fair skinned, blue-eyed daughter to Jillian--so that she can learn how to properly take care of her skin. She is just the best--professional; passionate; pleasant and pampering. While the space is small, they are expanding and I like the initimacy. I also regularly get massages from Margaret (as does my husband)--she is fantastic. The massages are completely therapeutic for body and soul. I hesitate to share them, but they are the best! more

Best Facial in NYC! No, really! 10/21/2006

I went to Glow for October Spa Week to try out a facial. I ended up trying the 4 Layer Vitamin C Facial which I loved! Although it was only 40 minutes, my skin has never felt better. I went on Monday and now it is Sunday, and my skin looks amazing. My best friend commented on how my skin looked "refreshed" and honestly, that is how I feel! Jillian, the owner did extractions and yes, they hurt, but my nose and chin look so clear and my pores look very small. I'm very happy and convinced that the next time my skin is ready for a facial, Glow is the place to go. Thanks so much for a great experience and I'm looking forward to my next facial. You have a new devotee! Oh, and my aroma therapy massage with Doreen was very relaxing. She has a great touch! See you soon! RL Pros: Hospitality, nice environment, great staff Cons: Can't afford to go more than every 6 weeks! more

Impressed with Kyra. 10/21/2006

My name is Lindsey M. and I'm so excited to say that I'm impressed with Glow. I had a facial with Kyra a couple of weeks ago and I'm still glowing. She is gentle but effective and any question I threw at her, she answered with care and integrity. She told me my skin was normal, but sensitive with blackheads in the T -Zone and she took the time to extract them carefully and diligently. I've never had a facial like this before. She obviously cares about her work and is passionate about her profession. Thanks Kyra and I look forward to seeing you in November. I'm hooked! Oh, and thanks for reccommendation of the sensitive skin cleanser, I love it. more

A client since 2001 10/21/2006

I've been going to Glow since 2001. I found out about Glow Skin when it came out in Daily Candy, that's how long ago! I'm surprised that someone had a bad experience at Glow since my facials, every single month, some intense, other not, have always been exceptional. Extractions are painful, no matter what, especially around " that time of the month", so with that said I expect some redness, even lingering.....doesn't matter, my skin looks better than it ever would if I didn't start taking care of my skin at Glow. I've tried several different therapists and each one, as unique as they are are special and satisfactory. My favorite is Jillian, but then again, I started with her and love her facials. She is a gem. Pros: Jillian, Jillian, Jillian! Cons: When she is not available, but all the therapists are great! more

BEWARE extraction scarring! (censor squad notwithstanding) 10/21/2006

I've waited > 1yr. to write my review, hoping that damage caused to my skin at GLOW would eventually fade away & I could be as pleased as many other patrons, but now it's time to share my own truth. Smart Citysearchers, click my username to see Im a regular & balanced reviewer - tho' a flurry of 10/22 & 10/23 reviewers critique ONLY Glow, referencing my comments...?? Hmmm : ). While my on-site experience of Glow was pleasant & relaxing, what truly matters in a spa is the final impact to one's skin. Since for me that outcome has been very distressing, I'm compelled to CAUTION OTHER FAIR/SENSITIVE SKIN PERSONS ABOUT POSSIBLE PERMANENT SCARRING FROM GLOW'S EXTRACTIONS. Very fair-skinned, I chose top-rated Glow on reviews suggesting skilled hands, highly attuned to personal skin needs. Before my facial, I voiced concern re: 1 small flat scar caused by a previous manual extraction (months prior) at Mario B. & my desire to avoid a recurrence of such damage. Since my Glow facialist was also fair & light-eyed I assumed she'd be aware of possible hypersensitivity! Never having experienced the "extractor " implement before, I didn't think much at the time of the multiple sharp "pinches" I soon began feeling on my face during the extractions, & a friend who saw my red face later that day suggested the irritation & red "dots" would soon go away. Well, over a year later, I'm still waiting. I feel strongly that Glow did not adequately inform me about possible harm that an extractor can wreak to sensitive skin, or discuss & offer alternative pore-cleansing techniques. I now have an apparently permanent series of flat red scars on both my cheeks that resemble a heroin user's needle tracks. So from now on I'll be wearing foundation make-up, which before my Glow facial was an enhancement to my appearance, NOT an everyday necessity. THINK TWICE about Glow if you have sensitive skin. Pros: Great location, soothing space, clean Cons: Inadequate "risk" assessment & disclosure, facial scarring (sad, but true!!) more

Friendly staff, wonderful facial with Dana 10/19/2006

Came to Glow for spa week and had a Manuka Honey facial with Dana and a massage with Doreen. Both women were so friendly and always trying to accomadate your needs. Dana was wonderful, and very knowledgeable about skincare. I asked her tons of questions and she felt comfortable answering all of my questions. She was great with extractions, got rid of a lot of milia that was on my cheeks. Face was a little sore afterward, but that's the price you pay to get rid of those suckers! Doreen was so pleasant and nice, the massage was very relaxing. I wouldn't say that it really got all my kinks out, but it was very relaxing especially after a hectic day at work. The place itself is a bit small, but everyone was so nice, that the size of the space is easily overlooked. Pros: great facial with Dana, super friendly staff Cons: a little pricey, couldn't afford to come here all the time =[ more

best facials 10/17/2006

I heard about this place from a few friends who had been there before. When I finally experienced it - it was nothing short of amazing!! #1 experience!! Treat yourself!! it's worth every penny. Gibs more

The Needle In A Haystack 10/17/2006

I traveled from NJ to get to this spa based on a reccomendation. It was so worth it! My skin is very dry so I decided to have a body scrub treatment. The staff was very helpful in helping select the right treatment that would treat my skin type. And unlike experiences I have had at other spas where staff is rushed to finish because another client is coming, I did not feel rushed through the treatment here. I really felt that I got well taken care of and full attention. I also got a facial and was surprised to get the same attention I got during my scrub. It was by far the best facial I have ever gotten! Pros: You get the treatments you need for you skin, not someone elses. Cons: I cant afford to go every day! more

Great experience until the extractions.... 10/16/2006

I initially mixed up the current address with the previous location since it was listed on the spa menu that I downloaded from the web site. (This information needs to be updated.) The space is small; but cozy and the skin care specialist was very friendly. The facial felt wonderful until she moved to the 'extraction' stage. She was so intent on removing debris from inside my pores that I am not sure my discomfort registered. She was too rough and my face was very sore afterwards. When she applied the mask I could not enjoy it since my face hurt so much. She mentioned that there would be a little redness the next day; but, that it would fade. Unfortunately, when I awoke the next morning I had several spots on my face that were red and bruised. As I type this, almost three days later, my face still has scabs on it. Although I enjoyed the hand massage and conditioning treatment during the facial and the steaming and facial massage, I know I will never go back after the harsh and abrasive extractions. Pros: Friendly & knowledgeable Cons: Extremely poor technique (extractions) more

NYC's Hidden Treasure 10/3/2006

Through friends I had heard Glow was a wonderful spa. They were right! I had an appointment with Keri for a facial. Keri and the receptionist Susan are extremely nice and accommodating. The rooms and the treatments are so relaxing it is a wonderful treat. I have gone every month since my first appointment and my skin has never looked or felt better!! Keri always uses her expertise by picking wonderful treatments that suits my skin needs. I have tried a bunch of treatments from the Glycolic to the wonderful bioelements facials....they are all my favorite. I leave Glow feeling refreshed and relaxed. I have found the cure for fabulous skin. There is not a month that goes by now that I don't see Keri. I am Addicted!! Pros: Friendly, great value and many great treatments to choose from Cons: NONE!! more

Cozy ambience and GREAT service 9/21/2006

Just came back from Glow yesterday. I feel WONDERFUL!!! The spa is cozy and clean. Susan at the front desk is very sweet. My LumiFacial/LumiLift w/ Microdermabrasion treatment with Jillian was excellent. She's very knowledgeable and explained every procedure to me. Her skillful hands performed gentle yet thorough extraction which left no red marks. After the treatment, my skin feels rejuvenated and looks glowing. I'm so glad that I did my research and made the right decision to go to Glow. I already booked additional sessions with Jillian. I so look forward to my next appointment. :-) Pros: Customer service. Professional treatment. more

Editorial
  • In Short
Since 1999, this Upper East Side spa has been a labor of love, expanding from a tiny one-room operation to a six-room suite. But that doesn't mean it's outgrown its down-to-earth vibe--rather, the soothing blue relaxation lounge is more akin to your best girlfriend's living room and estheticians are easily mistaken for old friends (and for some clients, they are). Founder Jillian Wright's loyal following means she's booked out for months, but not to worry--she trains each of her staff in the ways of top-notch treatment.
