Stumbled upon japonica.. 4/10/2012

Was having a lovely evening downtown and got a craving for for sushi...luckily i happened to discover this spot and it was GOOD. love their unagi and my husband got the udon and really liked it. more

Love this place! I am the pickiest b*%ch when it comes to sushi and there are very few place that I will actually eat. I've been known to walk out of a place when my food has been served so it speaks extremely high of this place that I not only stayed?but I enjoyed it. more

Fresh and delicious sushi at an affordable price and in a great location--right by Union Square. I love this location, it's a great spot to people watch if you sit by the window facing the street. Great decor and ambiance too. more

Get the Lunch Special! 3/31/2012

I'm a poor student and can't afford to buy Japonica's expensive sushi dishes. However, every once in awhile, when I need a little pick-me-up or just want to treat myself, I get their lunch special. The waitstaff is excellent, efficient, and professional. The atmosphere is an calm oasis and it's never too crowded or noisy. I recommend the lunch special w/salmon kama and bbq eel bowl. Both of these are TO DIE FOR. more

My fave sushi spot 3/29/2012

Love this place for a lot of reasons. Was sorta my go to spot when I went to NYU so it has a lot of sentimental value for me, but also the food is just phenomenal and I love the location. more

it's very fresh and delicious and sooooo cheap. Idk why some people on here are complaining about it being expensive! And the owner, Shinzo, is the sweetest man you will ever meet. Very good energy here. more

been eating here ever since i was a young college student fresh to nyc! although my budget has grown since then i still call japonica my fave sushi in the city. it's always good and the staff is amazing. the owners know me by now and i've gotten so many friends and family members hooked on it i should have some stocks or something! more

this is one of my go-to places when i am very hungry and want something that i know will fill me up and satisfy my taste buds. always good and their service never fails. the owner has been here foreverrrr and it is definitely one of those NY staples for people who have lived her for a while. more

For years this has been an NYU staple, but really the entire city should be taking advantage of their food. Delicious and affordable (remember: they cater to broke college students), you won't find better in the area for cheaper. more

One of my favorite places in NY 12/9/2011

I am saddended to see so many unhappy reviews for this place. I love it very much and have for decades. I love the Ikura, and the Shigiyaki. I like all theirs rolls, sashimi pieces, and sushi. - and the yellowtail is always very delicious. I have had some very memorable toro over the years there too. I love the guys, when you get one of the old faces especially. I like the owners, the mom and the son, - although I haven't been there as frequently as I used to, and haven't seen the mother in my visits over the past couple of years. The prices is high, - but that applies to so much of NYC, so I don't hold it against them. It's just less affordable in this bad economic climate. As far a civility, I have always loved it, and think I always will. more

Violently Sick 4/20/2011

Never again will I go back to Japonica... order two spicy tuna rolls and was sick in disgust. $10.50 per roll and I am not talking anything special... they charge extra if you want the roll with the rice on the outside. Are they kidding themselver. Never again. So many better options in NYC. more

Took some client s there for lunch who were from out of town, great impression I made. The sushi pieces are huge, and oh so fresh. I made the mistake of eating sushi in NJ last week, and after I had lunch at Japonica, you can taste the freshness. more

Over priced and very average food. 8/30/2008

I just don't get why this place seems to be well regarded ? Overpriced food is the order of the day. $ 3.75 for a miso soup ? $14 for a shrimp shumai appetise ? If the food was spectacular then maybe but it is not. There are a plethora of good well priced Japanese restuarants in this city that leave this place for dead. Put simply the sashimi was not fresh, the shumai the same (told the waiter this and we were still charged for it) and the service ordinary. My advice spend half the money elsewhere and you will get a better meal. Oh and don't start me about the waiters reaching across the table to clear when they could have walked around and cleared without intrusion to the conversation. Give this place a miss....I will be. Cons: Overpriced. Ordinary Food. Poor service. more
