I went to Hyman's with my family when we were visiting Charleston. I was disappointed after waiting in a cutthroat line for 30 minutes to find that the food was nothing to write home about. You can find amazing authentic southern seafood in Charleston, and yet out-of-towners line up like it's their job for a place owned and operated by a family from New York City. I found the food to be unremarkable-- too many selections are fried, and most are bland. One thing though that really was great was the Jumbo Shrimp appetizer. I don't remember exactly what the seasoning was, but it was excellent and the shrimp were HUGE. The food is fairly cheap, too, but I found the staff to be rude and/or not too bright. If you want real Southern food, I can't tell you where to go, but just don't go to Hyman's.
Pros: inexpensive, casual
Cons: bland, overrated
