Best

if you ever have visitors from out of town or you are a visitor and want to experience the south and charleston in one place with one fine affordable meal this is the place for yo...

Worst

Everyone always raves about Hyman's--I don't get it. Charleston is teeming with fantastic seafood restaurants, yet people are eight deep on a Friday at 6pm waiting to get a table ...

Hyman's Seafood is fantastic! 5/23/2008

I have been to Hyman's Seafood multiple times, and each time my family and I feel more welcome there. I am shocked by some of the bad reviews here. It seems that there is an air of jealously from a recent posting from a nearby establishment. Owner Eli Hyman is one of the most charming, warm individuals in Charleston and always comes over to our table to say hello when he is there and even advises well on what to do in Charleston that weekend. The food is also exactly what I expect: huge portions, delicious fish (they are clear on what is frozen and what is fresh...JUST ASK!!!), and the best hush puppies in town! I recommend the flounder - it is super tasty and it is always fresh! Pros: Fried seafood!, friendly management/service, downtown location Cons: line can be long - worth the wait more

Tourist Trap Nightmare 8/24/2007

We went here because of the rave reviews on a visit to Charleston while staying on Kiawah Island. This was the worst meal of our trip--even the Denny's we stopped at for lunch in Augusta was better. Terrible service began with the ""just another tourist"" attitude of the host staff, to the rushed feeling we got from the waitress who didn't seem to care at all. Food was all overcooked and bland. We didn't even finish our meals because it was so bad. My husband ordered his sesame tuna special rare to medium rare and it was over well done. My Mahi Mahi was rubbery and tasteless, despite the so-called ""Cajun Style"" I had ordered it to be cooked. Our daughter's fish n chips were mediocre, as were the shrimp and grits I had, both dishes I have tasted much better in our hometown of Atlanta. I can't imagine how anyone can like this place. Go to Gilligan's instead, if this is the type of dining you are looking for. Pros: We didn't get sick from eating here Cons: Service, Atmosphere, Food all were terrible more

Terrific seafood 7/4/2007

We loved this place. We went to several other restaurants in the area and this one was by far the best for the price. It's very casual, the service was excellent. The prices are very reasonable. I ordered fish and chips and it was enough for two people. My daughter ordered a buffalo shrimp po-boy and there was enough shrimp on the sandwich for 3 people. My husband got a combo platter and the scallops were the best! We will return. Pros: It has good service Cons: No place to park, we walked to the restaurant from our hotel. more

WORST PLACE EVER 12/27/2006

Hyman's is the most disgusting place I've ever been in my life. I also had the misfourtune of eating and working there sevearl years ago. The kitchen is GROSS. Don't go there. It's a total tourist trap. There are too many good, legitimate places in Charleston. This place is just terrible. Pros: Cheap Cons: DISGUSTING more

Put your name in early! 2/7/2006

I've eaten here recently and over the years. It's always great! Eli, one of the owners, comes and greets your table while you are there. If you don't want to wait, then come by early, and put your name in!!! Then go finish walking around down-town Charleston. By the time you get back it's time for your table! more

Lowcountry at it's best 1/9/2006

I am a local of Charleston who has lived, and visited most cities in our country. I use to think there was nothing better than New Orleans for Seafood. Until I moved to Charleston and found this wonderful restaurant. Being in the food industry for 3o+ years and one who appreciates good food, great service, and a resturant full of ambience then Hyman's is a must for any local or tourist. The staff is unbelievably friendly, who take pride in serving you a great meal. In my dining experiences the server's always point out the specials, and serve me those wonderful boil peanuts before I begin my dining experience. Dollar for dollar there's numberous places to dine in Charleston, but Hyman's really rings my bell. Pros: friendly, fast, good more

Once Was Enough 10/12/2005

If you are seeking the low country fare that Charleston is famous for go to another resturant. If you enjoy a long wait, poor service and awful food this is the place to go. My wife and I ordered fried shrimp. After one bite (which I subsequently deposited in my napkin) I summoned the manager (our server was not to be found) to complain that the shrimp was fishey tasting (usually a sign the shrimp is not fresh) and that it had not been deveined (disgusting). The manager informed us the shrimp was fresh and that not de-veining shrimp was a Charleston custom. I visit Charleston 5-6 times a year and have dined in most of Charleston's seafood resturants at one time or another and believe me shrimp that has not been de-veined is NOT a Charleston custom. Please go to another resturant. Pros: Location Cons: Long Wait, Tourist Trap, Awful Food more

CRAP NOT CRAB 1/11/2005

EVERYTHING EVEN THE OWNER SUCK, NOT SHUCK DO NOT EAT HERE, YOU WILL BE SORRY more

Stay Clear of Hyman's 9/15/2004

Worst experience ever. The owner is very rude and obnoxious and the food was terrible. We had the most awful meal during our visit to Charleston. This place is very over rated. Don't go there....not worth the wait. more

Only for Tourists 3/9/2004

My only problem with this restaurant is that it is a tourist trap and if you don't mind looking and acting like a tourist then go. I live in Charleston and I think that the only time that I or anyone that I know has been to Hyman's is because a family member from out of town was in Charleston and they were making them go to the restaurant. I think that if you really want to experience Charleston you need to go where the locals go and Hyman's is not one of them. more

the locals do not eat here 10/19/2003

As a former resident of Charleston, I can assure you the locals do NOT eat here....and they would never think of recommending it to anyone. Ditto to the review who wrote ""this place stinks"". If you have any doubt about whether to eat here, please go back and this review. I would not recommend this restarant based on the poor attention to service and the ""fish camp"" atmosphere. Do not waste time in those long lines when you could be savoring real lowcountry cuisine (ie. not fried food or low quality deli sandwiches) or touring downtown sites. So if you are walking by, just keep walking.... Pros: inexpensive Cons: low quality food, crowded more

The hyman is intact 9/22/2003

I went to A.W. Shucks one night and Hyman's the next and there was no comparison. Hyman's has a much more interesting menu, great portions, fresh seafood and better prices. It is not what I would consider a romantic restaurant and these aren't gourmet interpretations of seafood dishes, but it definitely gets high marks for what it sets out to do. Pros: good menu, fresh, affordable Cons: unsophisticated more

this place stinks 9/18/2003

I can not believe with all of the fantastic places to dine in Charleston that people wait in line to ""eat"" at Hyman's. I am from Charleston and let me tell all visiters no true native of Charleston would set foot in this place unless it was to work there and take your money. Fried seafood with no flavor and no real connection to southern cooking why even bother waiting just go to Red Lobster at home. If your going to take the time to travel to Charleston please take the time to eat somewhere worthwhile. Cons: bad food, bad service, long wait, too many tourist more

Best of Everything 9/14/2003

Tried their bloodymary, it was incredible, and I'm usually a vodka/soda/lime person. Their fettucini alfredo was killer, even better than many of the Italian restaurants in the area. Seafood was fresh and deliciuos; not over cooked like many restaurants tend to do. A definite must on any visitors list. Pros: good service, great food Cons: long wait, crowded, moderately expensive more

unexpectedly average 12/19/2002

I went to Hyman's with my family when we were visiting Charleston. I was disappointed after waiting in a cutthroat line for 30 minutes to find that the food was nothing to write home about. You can find amazing authentic southern seafood in Charleston, and yet out-of-towners line up like it's their job for a place owned and operated by a family from New York City. I found the food to be unremarkable-- too many selections are fried, and most are bland. One thing though that really was great was the Jumbo Shrimp appetizer. I don't remember exactly what the seasoning was, but it was excellent and the shrimp were HUGE. The food is fairly cheap, too, but I found the staff to be rude and/or not too bright. If you want real Southern food, I can't tell you where to go, but just don't go to Hyman's. Pros: inexpensive, casual Cons: bland, overrated more

Fresh, delicious seafood 10/6/2002

The place is not fancy, but clean and cheerful. The food is great. Good selection. Large portions. We were lucky to be seated promptly, but most often you have to wait out in the street for a table. Pros: food, menu selection, service Cons: no reservations, lines outside more

Good Seafood, Best in Downtown 6/24/2002

The food was good, and the owner's of the restaurant are really friendly and spoke with almost every table. Try the broiled scallops and shrimp or the shrimp and grits, both are pretty good. Pros: Quality Food, Friendly Owners Cons: No Parking, Crowded more

Hyman's is good, but not Great 5/29/2002

Hyman's is a decent seafood place, is it worth the normal 1 hour wait? probably if you want to see what all the fuss is about and if like me you are on vacation so in no big rush to go anyhwhere. overall, the food was ok, a little on the pricey side but I guess thats's b/c of the hype that surrounds Hymans. there have been many famous people who have eaten here also and their pictures are displayed throughout more

Hymans Is the BOMB!!!! 5/28/2002

Me and my mom come to Charleston every year for at least 4-5 days. I bet we eat at Hymans at least 1x a day. The service is great, the food is even better and the owner(which I assume is Aaron?) comes to greet everyone at their tables and welcome them. This is the best seafood I have ever eaten. EVER!!!! Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Good Price Cons: Crowded more

Not the best in town 5/19/2002

Everyone always raves about Hyman's--I don't get it. Charleston is teeming with fantastic seafood restaurants, yet people are eight deep on a Friday at 6pm waiting to get a table at Hyman's, where the best you can expect is a mediocre fried combo platter. more
