I signed a contract with H.O.W. tree trimming. For $1,200 to trim a tree at my home. To be paid $100. Per month. I paid the first payment at the time we made the contract. One month later they came and cut one branch of the tree and promises to come back in 2 weeks to finish the job and take all the trash. They never showed up so I call them. They promised to come back on the 16 of this month. Have not heard from them. I call and left massages no respond. Can I taken them to court and forced them to finish? more

I have used this org for three tree removals without any glitches what so ever. They arrived on time scheduled and did what they said they would. I was very impressed with their work and will continue to use if needed. Their acronym should be N.O.W. (not on welfare). more

Shame On Me 4/16/2012

I had two services performed over the course of two months. The first was a tree removal which was performed on the scheduled day however it took six days to remove the tree stump. They did not have the tree grinder in the San Antonio area and I had to call them daily in order to push them to remove the stump. The second service was tree trimming which was also done on the scheduled day however it took five days to remove the brush. In both cases I called daily speaking to numerous supervisors requesting that they complete the work. They seemed to be limited in their equipment quantity (one tree grinder and one tree branch chipper) that created limitations to service. They are inexpensive and you have to manage the process. I should have learned the first time. more

Cheap will get you Cheap 3/16/2012

Let me start out by saying we have used these people two times & you pay for what you get with these guys . the price is very reasonable .but the work is NOT top notch. That being said it is very affordable. the home owner will be doing some clean up after they leave. I had to clean the street area in front of our home both times after the chipper truck had come & i had to pick up stray branch's . Management seems to be a bit lax at this place . and has communicative problem between it and crew as far as scheduling and pick up are concerned .. we will not be using them again . Good luck to you if you do. more

Very Professional 2/27/2012

Had an emergency tree removal to prevent damage to my roof Only took about 24 hours from setting up appointment to completely knocking down the tree. Everyone from the person answering the phones to the workers knocking down my tree were very courteous, knowledgeable, and professional. Service was definitely worth the cost and the fact that it goes to a worthy cause is. . . nice icing on the cake more

If you need help they will help you 11/5/2011

I have know several addicts in my life, but the saddest was my stepdad. He was one of the best and most screwed up men I have ever know, I do know that the only place he was able to function as a normal person (a very tired, but normal person) was at H.O.W. Every time that he fell off of the wagon one phone call & they would take him back. I have recommended this place to several people over the years and I have been overjoyed to see that it has worked for some, it all comes down to how much you want help & what you are willing to give up. God speed, Megan B. more

H.O.W. follows through on contract promise. 10/12/2011

After an initial glitch in starting my yard clean-up on Monday, management was able to come up with a satisfactory plan to ensure completion as promised. The two guys, sent to my home in the Highlands at Woodlake sub-division, arrived about 1000 Wednesday morning as agreed, and after a tour of my property to describe the work intended, they got to it. In around two hours they had completed the contracted work to my satisfaction. I thanked them for the fine job they had done and report same to their supervisor back at the shop. The job was over priced by about $100, but upon considering all the money went to a good cause. more

Go some where else 12/28/2010

I was also at the H.O.W Foundation. The place is a joke and YOU DO NOT GET WHAT YOU NEED I have been Clean for four years! Not because of the H.O.W because of the STAR OF HOPE in houston ! They Steal money ! AND THEY DO treat people of color like it is the 1950's As far as tree i would give them a D+ . I also say if you are an addict and TRULY want to get SOBER and want to stay Sober FIND SOME PLACE ELSE ! No matter what Color you are! more

You Get What You Need 12/8/2010

As a former resident of the How Foundation, you need to know some things. I went to them not only once, but three times. That's right, my addiction was that bad, but when I called they came for me. We worked hard, idle minds go to bad places. You need to realize that everyone there is a recovering addict, even Walter (Buddy) Teague. Every institution has problems, for the How to the US Government, but we make it work. At the time I was there, we supported 30-50 addicts keeping their minds off the things that brought them there. Some people leave with a bad taste in their mouths, I know, I did 2 times. The moral of the story is I sobered up, now 5+ years from meth and cocaine. I cannot give enough gratitude to the How Foundation, they helped to save my life. They also provide great services to the surrounding communities, and those who use their services are saints even though they may not know it. As far as a comment I read earlier of someone who said people of color are treated unfairly, put down the pipe and realize drugs are not prejiduce. Know that I have 5+ years and that I have to work at this everyday. I no longer blame others for my actions, I now face them and deal with them with dope to hide them. HOW is a great place and I will always stand by that. more

Find some other place to Go 10/25/2010

If you are going to recive treatment you should find some place else that WILL TRULY help you I was the H.O.W Foundation for a year During that time If you are person of color You were treated like street trash! They work the workers seven days a week trimming trees! they have one or two meeting per week! It all about making Mr Walter Teage money ! the office workers steal Money from the foundation! This is NOT A GOOD Place IF you are seeking help If you Have an Addiction DONT GO THERE more

Tree trimming/clearing 8/3/2009

The HOW Foundation was contacted concerning clearing a portion of my land of Cedar trees. Their response was immediate, and the estimate reasonable. They showed up on the date agreed upon, did the work needed on time and were complete professionals. I strongly recommend them and will use their services again. Jan Pros: Excellent work more

Great Work! 1/2/2009

I contacted the HOW foundation two weeks ago to have some tree branches removed that were against my upstairs bedroom windows and the roof. I scheduled the estimate appointment for last Saturday. The staff at the office was very pleasant and professional to deal with. The person who came out for the estimate was also very friendly and gave me a very competitive estimate. The actual trimming appointment was scheduled for this morning. The three workers who came over were on time and completed the work within just a few hours. They did excellent work. The branches, some of which were very large, were cut up and loaded onto their trailer immediately. They cleaned everything up before they left. I am very impressed with their speed and professionalism. I will definitely use the HOW foundation again should I need more trees trimmed. more

Do not use the HOW Foundation 6/18/2008

Save your time and money. Signed a contract and paid 1/2 down (over $350). Was told I would be scheduled by telephone. Earliest date to get the work done was over 6 weeks away. Told them that was not satisfactory. Finally got the work scheduled sooner and took parts of 3 days to do the actual work. This was a 2/3 day job. Over 1 week later after completion I am still waiting to get the materials off my lawn and chipped and hauled off. I have lost over 50 square yards of lawn because the grass has been covered and has died. I get a different excuse every day and still cannot get the job finished because they demand their money as soon as the work is finished even though they have not chipped it and hauled it off. The foundation may be good but the office people do not know what they are doing. The men that came out and did the actual work did an excellent job but I would not recommend the HOW Foundation to anyone. Pros: Good workers Cons: Poor scheduling, do not show up when agreed, have not finished the job even though paid in full. more

Offensive Financial/Accounting Practices 4/29/2007

Although I believe the intention of the program is very good, their accounting practices are so offensive and out of line, I cannot recommend them. The crew showed up an hour late yesterday and left an hour early, which equated to 4 hours of work instead of 6, which was what the contract stated. I told the supervisor in Schertz that it was not a big deal if we could adjust the price the next day at the end of the job. more

Fast and Affordable 11/17/2006

We employed the HOW Foundation earlier this week to remove a very dead tree from between two houses. Their quote was 25% cheaper than the average quote we received and included no additional for tax as the other qoutes did. They also said that 50% of the price was tax deductible. We called to accept the quote and were scheduled for the following morning. They didn't call when deciding to postpone their arrival due to heavy winds, but still completed the job before the end of the day which didn't create a problem as we were home anyway. The crew of two worked efficiently, first removing part of a privacy fence, then removing the tree, and finally replacing the fence. We are pleased with the work and very happy with the price. Pros: Affordable, Good Cause Cons: Communication with customer more

Well done! 10/15/2006

The 2 guys that came out to give me an estimate were VERY professional and very polite. They gave me a price on site and I told them I would have to think about it and get back to them. Within 30 minutes, I received a call from a supervisor or sales person in the office, who took about 30% off the total price if I could commit that day. I was able to and miraculously, they were able to start the work the very next day. He asked if they could spread the work out over a week or more and I told them that was okay. As it turns out, they had a ""cancellation"" for the next day, so came out on Sunday and FINISHED THE JOB. They cleaned everything up and hauled it all away for a great price. The only negative thing that happened was a car window was broken in the hauling off process and we are currently awaiting the decision on if they are going to pay for it or not, as there were no witnesses. The cost of the window is far less than the discount I received so all in all, I am still pleased with the work they did. Pros: Great cause, price Cons: Resolving minor issue afterwards more

NOT RECOMMENDED 5/9/2006

Paid 50% at time of estimate. Scheduled more than a month later. First crew came out and worked 3 hours and left. Customer service told me job was bigger than expected. They showed 8 days later and left in less than 4 hours. Same excuse. Three trees to cut. Only 1-1/2 done. Don't know when they'll be back. Cut branches all over yard and on top of house. Save your money. The savings are not worth the anguish. Pros: Good Cause Cons: Poor Customer Service, Unreliable, Deceptive more

Forget HOW... WHY Did I call them? 4/25/2006

What a rip-off. The How Foundation showed up and did our evaluation. We arrived at a price and they took 50% at that point as ""a deposit."" They called a few days later and set the date of our work for MORE THAN A MONTH AWAY. Since then, they have cancelled on us and have rescheduled us. In the meantime, half the branches they were going to remove have fallen on their own, causing US to do the work ourselves. Still haven't come out to work on our trees and there's no way we can get our deposit back. Go with a more reputable company and forget HOW. Pros: less expensive, good cause Cons: unreliable, final product sub-par more
