Hog Island Italian Deli

This small deli off of Lavaca and 16th Street is a great lunch spot for those working just north of the Capitol. They always have a good lunch special that tops out at $6.99, and it includes a drink. Their menu sandwiches are stuffed with meats and taste. The best part about this small deli is that it stands out for cleanliness and customer service. If you've paid over $5 for a sandwich and wonder if the guy's hands were clean, this is a place for you. Every time I've gone to Hog Island, their service staff seems clean and willing to help. They have a great menu that ranges from hoagies, cheesesteaks, salads and pasta dishes. I highly recommend their Rose Pasta. It is a tasty blend of their homemade Alfredo sauce and marinara. Get it with the sausage (although chicken is also an option) and you've got yourself a winner. Their salads are also hearty and fresh. If you're into a ligh lunch, pair a salad with a Pellegrino (also sold there) and you'd be far from the usual greasy lunch standard. more

The Hog Island Deli on Lavaca is a really nice find for east coast style Italian deli sandwiches. A casual place that seems to attract a lot of folks who work in the Capital. They import their bread and meats from Philly so you know they are committed to East Coast flavor. Their Italian sub is awesome, lots of meats like ham, salami stacked on a super fresh roll. They have good chicken parm, cheese steaks and other hot sandwiches. more
