Gombei is one of the few authentic, rustic Japanese restaurants in the area. My favorites are the flavorful stews and curries. They remind me of those country diners in out of the way towns like Ise coastal area in Japan I used to visit on business. They have many daily and seasonal specials on the chalkboard and are well worth trying. more

great Japanese 8/19/2005

I have been going to this Japanese restaurant for 16 years. It is located in Japantown in San Jose. They have a list of daily specials written on a chalk board as soon as you walk in. they have fresh fish and many fried dishes. It is a very small restaurant and you should be there no later than 11:45am on a weekend unless you dont mind standing outside the restaurant in line. I always get the same dish and I have never been disappointed. It is pork cutlet and fried potato croquette. more
