Best Dishes in the City with a Friendly Family Owned Feel 1/10/2007

A friend of mine had a Christmas party at the Gold Mirror in December. We all shared our dishes with eachother and I can't say that I disliked any! The prime rib was perfection and the veal picatta was excellent. The waiters and busboys were very attentive. We even received a visit from one of the Chefs to our table. The DiGrande family works tirelessly to keep this place at a level of perfection, always. I will definitely be back! Pros: Great Service, Awesome Bar Cons: Leave a little early for parking.. But worth the wait! more

Best Lasagna in the world, but don't think the owner is going to greet you if you're black(well, she's never greeted me...) 10/1/2006

I'm so in love with the lasagna......the chief knows everytime I come in the door to start making it, it takes about 20 minutes to prepare because it's freshly made, and I'd wait an hour to have the most heavenly lasagna ever....the only thing that bothers me about the place is I've been there so much that the waiters, cooks, and bus boys know me (by face) and speaks everytime they see me, but the owner has never even smiled or said hi, she always pass my table without saying a word, but she stops at every other table smile and greet them....I'm usually the only black woman there when I'm there, so the place isn't too diverse and aside from the owner never once speaking to me and I've spent hundreds on the lasagna.....the place is great!!!! Pros: Best Lasagna Ever, Friendly Waiters, Wonderful Chiefs Cons: Owner has never spoke to Me, parking is metered, open only for lunch and dinner more

Wonderful 3/31/2006

I have been going to this restaurant for many years and I have never been dissapointed. The friendly staff and the variety of food is excellant Pros: Sevice, Food, affordability more

Busy/Noisy/Cold 3/14/2006

The noise level was very high. Front ""handicap"" door opens and stays open for a certain length of time; cold air kept blowing in across my legs. A large party got all the attention from our waiter. My scallops came with rice and broccoli which was way over cooked, the scallops barely cooked and in a very salty sauce. The waiter never came by to see how our meals were. I am a very good cook but not a paid chef, so PUHLEEZE, couldn't you come up with something more interesting than mushy broccoli and rice?? My friend said the veal was very good. Dining is very subjective and you may love this place or not depending on your own palate and preferences. Personally, I will never go again...I could have a quiet, warm, candlelit, fab meal at home. Cons: Horrible Parking, Noisy more

Fabulous Cicilian/Italian Cuisine 1/21/2006

I went to the Gold Mirror on a dinner date a few weeks ago. I was in awe the second I walked through its doors. The newly remodeled dining room was beautiful, like stepping back in time. I was quickly greeted by the beautiful hostess Josephine who owns the GM with her family and we were sat very promptly. The ambiance inside is like no other restaraunt. Nothing in North Beach rivals this place. I felt like I was in little Italy. The busboys brought out fresh, hot bread as soon as we were seated. I highly reccoment the Chicken Picatta and Fettucinni. It was to die for! Everything was perfect... and there was such a strong family vibe. What a little slice of heaven in the Sunset! Pros: Beautiful, Lovely Bar, Not too expensive more

A hidden treasure in the Sunset 12/29/2005

Everyone thinks of North Beach for Italian food. In the Sunset, this is a good Italian restaurant to take the family. I've been here twice this year and they serve a delicious prime rib and the veal parmagiana was equally good. Skip the soups, neither the minnestrone or white clam chowder were worth tasting, but the fried calamari appetizer (fried, then sauteed) in a garlicky butter sauce was really good. The bread was crunchy and crusty. The waiter was very attentive & checked back with us multiple times and the bus boy kept filling our water glasses. It's not inexpensive to eat here, however. The prime rib was $26 and came with spinach and baked potato. The veal came with rice and spinach. Dinner for 4, 1 glass of wine, 2 soups & one appetizer was about $120. Pros: Attentive service, good food Cons: parking more

A Slice of North Beach in the Parkside 12/5/2005

We moved here 2 years ago, and had only eaten at the Gold Mirror twice before their remodel. It was worth the wait! The food is better than ever. Great calamari, incredible ravioli, rich 3 cheese lasagna. Old school martinis sized just right so you're not sloshed after 1 drink. A lovely family operation - you can feel the warm welcome in every bite. Wine list is mezzo-mezzo, ask for the Bastardo by the glass if they have it. Cheese & crackers will keep you from starving if you didn't make a reservation and you have to wait at the bar. Josephine is a delight! Giuseppe & Dominic turn out some great dishes. Pros: Nice bar snacks, Broad Menu, Home Made Pasta Cons: Parking can be bad, Fills up fast more

great place for a great meal 11/1/2005

My parents were visiting from out of town and on a whim I took them to the Gold Mirror. Although we arrived just as they opened at 5pm, we were seated immediately and the service was great. The waiter was friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and had the chef create a special pasta and shrimp dish for my mother even though it wasn't on the menu. Most of the food was perfectly done; my only problem was that my chicken picatta was a little too thick. Overall, a very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere with very tasty food. Pros: great service, great food, good value Cons: not trendy more

My 50th Birthday Party 10/5/2005

Hi Gold Mirror, I just wanted to write and thank your staff for the wonderful time my guests and I had at the Gold Mirror for my 50th birthday party. Your banquet room is beautiful and I just love how the balcony overlooks the main dining room!! The food was simply devine. Kudos to our waiter Salon, he kept us happy and made sure we had a good time. We will definitely be back again soon. Pros: FOOD, Beautiful banquetroom, service more

Belissimo 10/4/2005

Great authentic Italian restaurant. The last time I was here was before the remodel and WOW is this place classy! The food is better than ever, the fresh Calamari saute appetizer was deliscious, they don't deep fry them like most places. The Saltinbocca was fantastic and the Tiramisu was out of this world. The friends I was with had the homemade ravioli stuffed with Veal and Canelloni which they both enjoyed. The service was good considering how busy this place was on a Monday night, luckily we had a reservation so we didn't have to wait. I strongly suggest making a reservation. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance Cons: Very Busy more

WOW!!! - San Francisco Restaurants look out 9/10/2005

Unbelievable!! I've lived in San Fancisco for 40 years and have just discovered the Gold Mirror after it's grand re-opening. So far I've dined there 6 times since it's grand re-opening and each time the food, service and atmosphere has been excellent. My wife and I have been dining out every Saturday night in SF for the last 20 years and the Gold Mirror is our new favorite. I ordered the Veal Scallopini mushroon and my wife had the Petrale which was very fresh and cooked perfectly. Extraordinary! So far we have tried a different dish during each of our visits and each week we fall in love with each new entree we try. Don't forget to stick your head in the kitchen and thank Master chef Giuseppe and his sons Domenico and Roberto. You can't say that you are SF native if you haven't been to the Gold Mirror. Pros: FOOD, AMBIANCE, SERVICE more

sorry, very disappointed! 8/23/2005

well, i have been to virtually every Italian Restaurant in the city, but, I must say this was definetely below average! There are plenty other good italian restaurants in the city. there so called fresh fish was not good, and there service was very rude especially the waiter with the glasses. Cons: food, service more

Pure Gold 8/13/2005

I have lived in the Sunset all my life and had often seen the Gold Mirror while driving past, and finally decided to take everyone there for my mom's birthday. INCREDIBLE FOOD! Our table ordered the lasagna which my kids loved, the scallops, the salmon infused with lemon, the homemade ravioli, and the roasted chicken. Each entree was done to perfection. The waitstaff were courteous and attentive. The bartender, when we first arrived, immediately gave our kids some Ritz crackers and entertained them with ""a rolling lime under a napkin"" trick. The hostess was lovely. Highly recommended. Reservations are definitely required as the place was very crowded even at 5pm on a Sunday. Pros: food, staff, ambience more

Welcome Back Gold Mirror! 7/24/2005

After being closed for over a year, the restaurant is remodeled and beautiful! It still has the same feel, and the food is still excellent. Josephina, the owner and hostess, is happier than ever and her friendly face is a welcome sight for the Sunset again. Pros: Great service, Real Italian Food more

N.Beach - Look Out! 4/17/2004

What a hidden gem of an Italian pleasure in the sunset. The minestrone is a bit salty and thick for my taste, but some may prefer it. However, the avocado/crab (super fresh) salad is wonderful. Ask for oil & vinegar on the side and a sprinking of blue cheese. The melon with prociutto had the ideal sweet/savory combo going on. And, the spaghetti with mushrooms (we shared) was traditional and quite good. Only our 3rd (yes 3rd!) basket of bread was warm. Our starter cocktails were a hit, and then we moved on to a average but good pinot grigio. The exceptional service and unique meditereanean and almost middle eastern temple-decor flare ambiance along with the local flavors make for a very nice experience in all. Pros: ambiance, flavors, service more

Kitschy fun 2/12/2003

What a fun experience. The Gold Mirror like a time travel experience back to 1958. This is the kind of place Bucca di Beppo tries to immitate, but the Gold Mirror is an original. more

Want a dinner you can't refuse? 8/7/2002

Excellant place! wonderful service, great food, an a really cool bar with two color lighting panels and christmas lights. What a great neighborhood place! We had a Chicken Romana which was *hudge* and a rigatoni with meat sauce which was great and their tieramisu was wonderful. Great old world Italian place which wiped the black and white tiled floors of most North Beach haunts I've been to. Pros: dark, friendly, classy bar Cons: can hear trains, parking is so so more

A local favorite 7/13/2002

The best sweetbreads in SF! I'm sure the other things as just as fine, but I am hooked on the sweetbreads. The service is perfect. The prices are right. more
