Editorial review from Citysearch 7/14/2012

This is easy. You may or may not have good service, better for lunch and really early dinner and worsening as the day goes on.\r The food is average, the menu awfully traditional, the wine list short, and the servers not very knowledgeable about their selections. more

Excellent view, great service, terrible food 2/15/2012

Went on on Valentine's day, a road was closed and we called and arrived thirty minutes late. They had saved our table for us and we were sitted right away. They view of Pittsburgh at night is absolutely breath taking. Our servers were excellent, the apppetizer was very good. My wife and I ordered the Georgetown inn combination which is prime rib and stuffed shrimp. Sadly this was the worst Prime rib I have ever had, it was tough, unflavored, felt I was eating some old cow. I have never rated anything before and I have read all the reviews for this restaurant and should have listened, but I always want to give the benefit of doubt. For $35.95 each for this dinner I would have preferred to just get the bread and butter and stare at the unbelievable view, but I would not go back. Great view with lousy food was a terrible disappointment. more

Great View lousy food 11/26/2011

The View was great but the food was lousy. \r French onion soup was cold, fish entree was cold, swimming in butter and lacked any flavor. They need to hire someone who can cook. Boring and overpriced for the quality of the food\r more

Great View and good company 10/5/2011

I flew in from LA to visit friends I haven't seen in 30 yrs. A buddy and I rode the incline and stopped in for a drink and made reservations for another night. The place was more casual than the others on the Mount. The prices were steep but the view was grand. Our food was so-so, some things good and some not so good. The service was so-so also as I had to ask for our salad and the spinach soup (I didn't get it) was like pudding but my overall time there was beyond words. Just being with friends and that view and a drink for 2 made my experience one to remember always. I would go back again. more

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE 8/18/2011

MY EXPERIENCE AT GEORGETOWNE INN WAS MEMORABLE. THE VIEW, FOOD, SERVICE, AND NO RUSH ATTITUDE HAS MADE THIS A MUST RETURN EXPERIENCE. I AM PLANNING TO VISIT AGAIN THIS UPCOMING WEEKEND AND HOPE MY EXPERIENCE TO EQUAL THE LAST. SO MANY TIMES YOU GO BACK TO AN ESTABLISHMENT WITH HIGHER THAN NORMAL EXPECTATIONS AND THEY FALL SHORT. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED OF MY FINDINGS. more

""McDonalds with a nice View"" 7/28/2011

The rating is not even worthy of ONE star, but one has\r to place some sort of rating..We went here for a good\r dinner for my fathers' birthday, but should have gone\r to the ""Morton"" steakhouse in downtown...Our service \r was horrid, waitress beyond inexperienced, rude&crude\r and the $80. worth of steak dinner which was no more\r than a cheap cut to be had at the Giant Eagle meat\r department, and then not cooked even close to what\r had ordered....BOTH of ours...The salad was nothing\r but a skimpy plate of ""Picks"" and pieces and nibbles\r of nothing, the onion soup with hardly any onions? and\r then the ""Birthday"" cake surprise which the waitress\r boasted before we ordered, but never seemed to happen...A VERY sorry display of total non-commitment\r and lack of professionalism..We will never go back, I\r live halfway across country, but father is there...He will\r tell all of his friends and others to ""Keep Away""\r Go to Mortons, if you need a steak...Georgetown is\r overpriced nothing....However, IS a view involved here!!!\r THAT is all you are paying for..! (You can do that for free, at the incline next door ! )\r more

A Pleasant Dining Experience 4/27/2011

We visited the Georgetown for our 25th anniversary and it was a pleasant experience. After reading some reviews I had my doubts. When we arrived, we were seated promptly by a window with a great view of the city. I will say that the service was excellent. The wait staff was attentive yet not irritating, anticipating our needs. The Georgetown has a nice atmosphere but it is a bit out dated. The view of Pittsburgh is superb. We received a nice surprise when the waitress informed us that with dinner, there would be soup AND salad plus veggie, although the menu states soup OR salad. The French onion soup was very nice. Not overly salty with a generous amount of onions. We had a nice mixed green salad with a pleasant peppercorn ranch. The NY Strip Steak was cooked perfectly and was flavorful and tender. The Prime rib OK. It was cooked properly but rather tasted bland. I added a lot of black pepper. In a small dipping cup was an odd tasting au jus. I passed on it after the first dip. The biggest disappointment was the Yorkshire pudding. It had an awful, burnt taste. The broccoli was crisp and flavorful. We also had a nice loaf of fresh baked bread with whipped butter. This was very nice. We passed on dessert, despite their delicious looking appearances, as we had plenty to eat and were full. Overall we had a pleasant dining experience although it was way over priced. Even with a $25 gift certificate, we still paid 5-star restaurant prices. We enjoyed ourselves but probably will not return due to the overall cost. I suppose you pay for the scenery. By the way, use the valet parking. It is half the price of the lot across the street. more

VERY HAPPY WE WENT! 4/2/2011

Our recent, and first, experience here was this past Friday evening. We had reservations at 7pm and were seated promptly. The service was excellent throughout the evening....very attentive without being clingy. The food was DELICIOUS, and the prices are reasonable considering all that you get! Each table receives a board of cheese and crackers, plus a mini bread loaf. Each entree includes soup of choice, AND salad of choice, AND side dish of choice, each of which is generous in portion. Our entrees were full of great flavor, generous in size, with the seafood being very fresh and succulent! And then dessert....yummy! The ambience and atmosphere is very pleasing and relaxing. The style of decor may be outdated, but then i don't choose a restaurant for its looks. We are glad we didn't let the negative reviews left on this website by other diners keep us from trying this place for ourselves. We had such a wonderful experience! It is a great place to celebrate your special days. We highly recommend it! more

Not worthy of the bricks and mortar used to construct 2/14/2011

I've never written a review for a restaurant, whether the restaurant was fantastic or average. Usually, I just communicate my sentiments via word-of-mouth. However, this restaurant deserves time expended for a review. The food was detestable and has no connection to a fine dining or even the most moderate fine dining experience. The seafood was all previously frozen and much to my chagrin, the crab used for the crab cakes had a brown hue, the shrimp were overcooked and the oyster was spoiled. The ambiance of the restaurant is rather drab and I would imagine there's mold hiding beneath the 30-year-old wallpaper. The food lacked thought, lacked creativity and ingenuity and what it lacked in everything fine dining, it naively made up for it with salt and butter. This restaurant should no longer exist, the market should not allow for such poor food and service. The restaurant doesn't deserve it's Mt. Washington view. I've committed to adding this review to every website cataloging reviews because it's abhorrent to know this restaurant serves such poor quality food. In fact, a bologna sandwich has more relation to fine dining than this restaurant. They should hang a sign from the restaurant that reads, ""Buyer Beware."" And, of all days, we chose this place for Valentine's Day. more

Disappointing - Terrible steak 2/14/2011

My main complaint is that my steak was awful. I ordered the strip steak, and hardly any of it was edible. There was a tendon or artery than ran through the entire steak, making it extremely difficult to cut and chew.\r \r Our service, was also less than spectacular, as our server acted put off by taking our orders.\r \r Very disappointing. more

Georgetowne Inn still first class 12/20/2010

I have been reading recent reviews of the Georgetowne Inn on Mount Washington, that have been rather negative. My boyfriends family just invited me and my daughter to share a Christmas celebration, as we did last year at this time of year. I was worried because of the negative reviews. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised.\r The ambiance was fantastic, the service immpeccable, and the food was still very very good. You can not beat the price for the courses they share. Cheese and crackers, soup, salad and a side come with your meal. The appetizers are oldie but goodies that are now hard to find in the burgh! Oysters on the half shell, baked artichoke hearts and escargots are exsquitely prepared at a very fair price! The menu is diverse and has something to please everyone. The view breathtaking.\r \r Please do not let a few negative reviews influence your decision to return to or try the Georgetowne Inn for the first time. It is a winner! more

Reservations mean nothing and employees are rude 11/19/2010

I take that back - the bartender was lovely - but the rest should be fired. The young girl working as a hostess cannot tell time, cannot articulate well and is extremely rude. I took many people from out of town there for a 7 PM reservation for 12. Got there at 6:45 and there were empty tables but nothing set up for 12. They said it would be a few minutes until they got set up. I thought alright we were a little early. A few drinks later 7 came and passed and I went over and asked how much longer - she said it will be ready for you soon. It was 7:20 when I went back over and asked if it would be soon - still empty tables and she was doing nothing. In 25 minutes only a few people came in (it was a Wednesday). My guests were getting restless and the bartender even went over and asked and I heard her tell him - ""I have better things to do that worry about that woman not getting her food quick enough."" Getting my food? I just wanted to get my table! I called Monteray Bay and they said that by the time we walked up the hill they would have a table for us. We paid our drink tab and left. I will not be returning to Georgetown Inn - I even called the next day and asked for the manager (none were availble on my visit) and they said they did not know what I wanted them to do about it! I did not want a free meal,. I just wanted them to know why thier business is going down hill. more

Worst Steak Ever 6/8/2010

The view is spectacular, but after that the quality begins to descend. The spinach salad with the warm bacon dressing was quite good and the French onion soup was fine, but I ordered a medium-well strip steak. The steak came out crispy on one edge and no pink was to be seen. When the waitress returned, she said ""that does not look medium-well"". I sent it back. The second steak still had some crispy parts and if one looked hard enough in the very center one could see a slight amount of pink. I do not recommend eating here. You are paying for the view, not for a quality meal. Pros: Great view Cons: A little slow; terrible steak more

customer service is not their strength 2/16/2010

If you are looking for a nice night out . this is not it. \r Month's ago my husband and I made reservation for Valentine's Day dinner. We were looing for a restaurant that was a favorite for both of us. Georgetown Inn immediately came to mind. We made our reservation at 8:00 and arrived by 7:45. The valet tuned us away no parking available and we had to fiend for ourselves on a snowy and cold night. Strike one. My husband dropped me off and I was going to check in. I was able to step into the door and stood there for 20 minutes trying to make my way to the hostess stand. There was crowd of people so thick I could not move. Each waiting to check in for dinner. The hostess then told me that it did not matter that I had a reservation it would be two hours for a table. She was short with me and very rude and said if I did not want to wait I did not have to. I think she was hoping we would leave so she could get on with what was more important to her certainly it was not service. So we sat at the bar and waited. Perhaps that was the maser plan. The bartender by the way was great. After checking with the hostess periodically we were finally seated a little after 10pm. (Ridiculous) .the waitress although helpful was also not very attentive or friendly. she did not stop back at the table but one. Good thing I was not thursty! If you get a chance for a romantic nght out. dont go to the Georgetown Inn. you will only end up frustrated. Pros: food is good Cons: not welcoming and unfriendly more

Don't bother making a reservation 1/1/2010

My husband and I made plans to go to the Georgetown Inn for New Year's Eve. We had been there many times in the past and had always enjoyed it; though it pales in comparison to the other choices Mt. Washington has to offer. I called and made a reservation three weeks in advance for 9:30 PM, at that time I was told that they would be only allowing customers stay at their table for a two hour maximum. I should've gone somewhere else knowing that the Georgetown managed busy nights by kicking people out of their tables, nice customer focus. My husband and I arrived at the restaurant at 8:45 PM and were told that they did not have a reservation under our name. The woman was so rude and basically made me out to be liar when I told her that I called three weeks ago. When I noticed that their reservation system was a note pad with pencil scribbled on it, I really wasn't surprised that they didn't have mine. Here's a novel idea, buy a reservation book or better yet invest in a computer. I was more put off by the hostess' rudeness than the fact they didn't have our reservation. After reading the reviews on this site, I guess we didn't miss much. Pros: Nice View Cons: Ignore Reservations more

TERRIBLE!!!! 11/16/2009

I truly wished I would have read these reviews prior to eating at the Georgetown Inn this past Friday night. All I can say is the majority of these described my experience perfectly. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!! It has been several years since I was there last and let me say the inside has not changed: same dirty worn carpet, utterly dated tacky décor and the wood on the walls looks as if an animal was trapped there and was scratching to get out!! Ok, the view of the city is beautiful, but who doesn’t know that. We did not have a reservation so we stopped in on a whim at around 7 o’clock expecting a long wait; however, they were able to accommodate our party of 5 within a half and hour—that is not a good sign!! When I first walked in, the young girl at the front did not even acknowledge me but the matre d’ (dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt mind you) was very helpful to get us seated. As for the food, Please take my word for it, TERRIBLE!! Just about the worst in the city!!!! I have had better pasta meals at Olive Garden and I hate chain restaurants!! $27.95 for over cooked pasta with shrimp and scallops that had the consistency of a rubber glove. Oh and like all of the reviews here, our French Onion soups were also warm at best; at least the chef is consistent there. I could go on but you get the point…this place needs to be closed down!! There are too many great restaurants in the city to waste your money at the Georgetown Inn!!! Pros: Great View Cons: Everything Else!! more

I BOOKED A REHERSAL DINNER AT THE GEORGETOWNE 1 YEAR IN ADVANCE.....THE RESERVATION WAS MADE FOR 7PM ...I HAD CONFIRMED THE TIME WITH THE MANAGER (CAROL) SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF SEVERAL MONTHS ....THREE DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT I CALLED TO CONFIRM EVERYTHING AND WAS TOLD BY THE MANAGER(CAROL) THE THERE MUST HAVE BEEN SOME MISTAKE BECAUSE THEY ALREADY HAD A PARTY BOOKED IN THE PRIVATE ROOM AND OUR PARTY COULD NOT BE SEATED UNTIL 8:30 PM AS A RESULT OF THIS WE WERE PUT ON THE MAIN FLOOR AND WERE VERY CROWDED .......THE OWNER OF THE ESTABLISHMENT MADE A COMMENT TO ONE OF OUR GUESTS THAT HE DID NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE BRIDE AND GROOM.......BEST ADVISE I CAN GIVE ANYONE BOOKING AN EVENT AT THE GEORGETOWNE IS ---GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING ...WE TRIED GET A CONTRACT BUT WE WERE TOLD THERE WAS NO NEED FOR ONE....I TRUSTED THEIR WORD ......PLEASE DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID ....GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING AND HAVE THE PERSON YOU ARE WORKING WITH SIGN IT OR YOU WILL BE SCREWED OVER JUST LIKE I WAS.. ALSO....UPON RETURNING TO HIS CAR THE FATHER OF THE GROOM HAD HIS CAR WINDOW LEFT DOWN.... THE SEAT WAS SOAK AND WET DUE TO THE RAIN THAT EVENING.... THE VALLET PERSON STATED THAT THEY ALWAYS LEAVE THE CAR WINDOW OPEN WHEN PARKING THE CARS IN THE GARAGE.....I GUESS I DONT UNDERSTAND ....IF THE CAR WAS PARKED IN A GARAGE HOW DID THE SEAT GET WET.....NOTHING DONE TO CORRECT THAT PROBLEM EITHER.....NO ONE AT THE GEORGETOWNE REALLY SEEMED TO CARE ABOUT EITHER PROBLEM......PLEASE JUST BEWARE OF DOING BUSINESS WITH THIS ESTABLISHMENT Cons: BOOKED A REHERSAL DINNER HERE AND IT WAS A COMPLETE MIX UP more

Beautiful view, But ! 7/27/2009

We took my inlaws there for a 50th wedding celebration dinner. The view was beautiful, but you can get a better view by walking Mt. Washington and stopping on a \r scenic overlook and even taking awsome pictures of the skyline. The french onion soup was good, but only warm, the bread was HARD to eat. The salad and veg. did not have any flavor to them and the dinner itself was O.K. but not worth the price. Oh ! and don't order alcohol, that will add at least another $30 to your bill. My suggestion would be to walk Mt. Washimgton for the view and then eat at your FAVORITE diner. Pros: Beautiful view of the city, especially at night Cons: way overpriced!!! more

Last place in the world to eat 7/24/2009

This is one of the worst restrautants I have ever visited. Reservations were difficult... the woman who answer the phone acted like this was the first time anyone ever call them. When entering, you pass though a very dark small hallway and all the wait staff look at you like you are from Mars. \r I was seated one table away from the window... in the middle of the wait staff runway. \r I ordered the Prime Rib with Yorkshire Pudding... The Yorkshire Pudding had to be at least a week old and cold. The Prime Rib has so much fat in it..that I would not even offer it to my dog. The broccoli was hard with no taste. The loaf of bread was stale. The french onion soup was OK but not hot. The wait staff was horrible.\r The menu prices on the web site were much lower than the real price. Come on now... how much time does it take to update prices on a web site. \r I will never think about going to the Georgetown Inn again. Pros: Wonderful view of Pittsburgh Cons: Terrible food at an expensive price more

special place to eat & enjoy the view 7/1/2009

Georgetown has always been a special place for my husband & I. We've taken out of town guests, celebrated anniversaries, and birthday's there. Recently took visitors from N.C. Felt we had a great meal for the price . . cheese board, a loaf of bread, soup & salad, and entree. Salad had no cheap iceberg lettuce. Everything was fresh. The waitress was very attentive. Got a thank you from our out of town guests specifically mentioning the trip to Georgetown Inn as a highlight of the visit. Pros: wonderful salads/everything was delicious Cons: everyone would like to sit next to the windows more
