Best

My favorite is the large serving size of excellent tempura. Then I have to decide -- tasty beef slices, sashimi, salmon teriyaki, ginger pork or the tonkatsu for my second choice....

Worst

After months of waiting for Blowfish in Santana Row to open, I finally went there yesterday for dinner. Service was great and that's all that's great about Blowfish. The sushi was...

Good Name, Lots of Hype, BAD Sushi!!! 9/26/2005

I went to Blowfish Sushi in Santana Row this past weekend. I had always heard that Blowfish was supposed to have great sushi. However, I was really suprised to find that their sushi was awful! It was not fresh at all, and tasted very artificial. Further, the service was really slow and the prices are way too high for bad food. The restaurant itself very fun and 'hip'. I suggest coming here for drinks, then going elsewhere for dinner. more

Great place to eat! 8/29/2005

Blowfish is a great sushi restaurant to either go on a date or a palce to be seen. The sushi tastes great and the portions are decent. The ambiance is fun with the DJ spinning good tunes and attractive ladies passing by. After dinner, there are a few good places to just stumble over to! Pros: Good looking women, Nice cuts of sashimi, Free parking more

This is a good place to go if you have money to spend 8/11/2005

Regardless of what the previous reviews have stated, they have almost identical selection for sushi compared to other restaurants if you are looking for rolls or nigiri, you simply need to know what to ask for! They don't have the same itemized menus as other places. The high point of this restaurant isn't simply the sushi, however, it's the appetizers, desserts AND the atmosphere. Be prepared for noise, though--it's got incredibly loud music and you need to sit close to your dining partner in order to have ANY kind of conversation. They play anime on almost every television, and there is a LOT of them set into walls and pillars. You won't really be able to follow what's going on though, with the animes, since there are no subtitles and you wouldn't be able to hear the speech anyway. If you DO go here, I highly reccomend getting the Pyramid of Tartar or the Fluffy Crustacean. For dessert, you have to try the wasabi ice cream, Buddha's Favorite, or Sweet Zen Garden. All are DELICIOU more

Blowfish Sushi 8/9/2005

Blowfish Sushi is the most expensive sushi place that I have been to. All my wealthy friends say that they love this place so I came here to try, but it is extremely expensive. Hard to find parking, and not a big selection. more

Sush at its worst 7/7/2005

With all the establishments in the Bay Area that serve sushi one might get overwhelmed with which one to choose. To make your decision a little easier, scratch Blowfish Sushi off of your list. The restaurant is incredibly overpriced and has a very short list of items. more

User review by mrazlee 2/11/2005

The scene was great. It was very trendy, good food, and a fun place to be. I've been to more authentic Japanese sushi houses, but this place is worth the try if you have never been here before. more

Welcome Addition 2/3/2005

Blowfish Sushi is a welcome addition to the other typical, shopping center Sushi restaurants in the area. Sushi is fresh, but nothing spectacular. But what it lacks in food, it makes up for in style. The restaurant is very trendy and great for people watching. more

High hopes smashes 11/10/2004

After hearing how great this place was - we tried it out for lunch. We ordered the spring rolls for an appetizer - bland is a great word to describe them - soy sauce didn't even help. The rolls were pretty but the flavor just wasn't there - the mango wasn't in season, the avocados has no flavor... we were quite dissappointed and won't return. Pros: Staff, Presentation Cons: , Flavor more

some hits, some misses 9/2/2004

The sushi and dishs are inventive, but some have more style than substance. Do try the sashimi combo. Good quality food and execellent presentation. Pass on the spider roll. Not crispy. The ambiance is not for everyone, but I find it quite enjoyable, especially after a beer or two. Good place to people watch. Pros: presentation, ambiance Cons: , inoncsistent quality, crowded more

Not Just Good..Its VERY Good! 6/17/2004

I recommend to my friends and I'll tell them to recommend it to their friends! That is how good I feel about this place. It is very trendy; their walls are filled with anime cartoons. You walk into a place where you will feel as if your taken into to modern day tokyo. Each of their dish is very artistic and their flavors just makes you want more! Pros: service, food, ambiance more

Best Sushi I've ever had! 6/10/2004

My friend and I had to try Blowfish Sushi as we had been told it was the best. We just ate lunch there (6/11/2004) and we both thought it was delicious. The service was knowledgeable and very efficient. We tried 2 types of sushi, tempura, and the box lunch. Everything was special. Had 2 non-alcoholic drinks which were refreshing. Price was good at lunch and the music was fine. At night, the music is much louder which might drive the older set away. Pros: service, ambiance at lunch, variety/creativity more

Good Sushi 3/25/2004

The sushi here was fabulous, but the main entree was less than appetizing, ESPECIALLY for the price. The review I read about them stated that they were a dim lighted family atmosphere restaurant, but the latter could not be farther from the truth. The music was blaring, we felt as if we were in a club ON the dance floor. I do recommend that you at least TRY it once though to see if it is your thing! Pros: Great Sushi, Anime playing on wall Cons: , Fairly OK Entrees more

New High For Sushi 2/11/2004

Blowfish Sushi has elevated sushi to a new high, the great chefs do a great job of exciting your palette with some great tastes. My wife and I have had several great meals at Blowfish and the sushi is just part of it... You will find some of the best bartenders in town, Jimmy, keep up the great work and thanks for always making our visits to the bar beyond great. John Russo keeps the staff on top of it's game always, and what's great about John is he even gets his hands dirty and stays involved when things get overwhelmed. Great job John, and thanks to all at Blowfish for your great service! Pros: Great Sushi, Great Bartenders, Great Staff Cons: , n/a, n/a more

My Review of Blowfish 1/15/2004

Great place to hangout. A bit pricey but the foods great. Nice atmosphere to hang out, meet people and have a couple of drinks. The only thing is the lounge area is rather small and is usually crowded. Pros: Food, Drinks, Atmosphere Cons: No place to sit more

Great Sushi Place 10/12/2003

Never been to the Blowfish in San Francisco but I thought this one was fantastic! We went on a crowded Friday night so we had to sit at the bar for a while waiting for a table (the bartender made strong drinks for us - nice!). The beautiful hostesses and waitresses were on top of their game making sure we weren't forgotten amongst all the people piling in there. When we were properly seated our waitress was SO helpful and attentive I thought the service was among the best I've ever experienced. It's a touch expensive but that's what you get for dining at Santana Row! more

Better than the SF equivalent 8/11/2003

Blowfish in San Jose was a memorable experience, beginning with the atmosphere-great music and overall ambience, and a diverse crowd. But most importantly, the sushi is divine, the best sushi I've had in years, including some very novel rolls and some interesting and creative takes on old standbys. Other non-sushi dishes were excellent also, and the green-tea ice-cream was to-die-for. I was pleasantly surprised that the overall experience was better than Blowfish SF and would return to the San Jose branch in a heartbeat. more

Great food, great music! 8/5/2003

I've been a patron of Blowfish Sushi up in San Francsico for years, so when I heard that they were opening one much closer to home I was thrilled. This one is everything the SF one is and more. In addition to the excellent food, slick decor, and great service, they've added a new touch - DJs. Seems like 3 or 4 nights a week they have local DJS in spinning house music, and its just great! The place is open until 2am, and on by about 11pm its jumping. My new favorite spot in San Jose. more

Just What the South Bay Needs! 8/5/2003

Blowfish is a fabulous and much needed addition to the commercialized glamour of Santana Row. It brings a funky LA/Miami/Tokyo vibe to sleepy Silicon Valley. The environment is fun and loud with a very attractive crowd and waitstaff, and sometimes graphic anime playing on screens throughout the restaurant. The food is exotic with a beautiful presentation- the entrees are mediocre, but the appetizers, sushi rolls and sashimi are fantastic! My personal favs are the Pyramid, Ritsu Roll and the Sashimi Combo. The bar serves a variety of hot and cold sake and specialty sake-based cocktails like the Mango Mojito and Peach Nympho and stays upon until 2am for the night crawlers! There are locally-renowned DJs spinning house and electronic music Thurs-Sat, and on Mondays. The food is a little overpriced, but what on Santana Row isn't? You pay typical San Francisco prices, but for top-quality food and a unimitable ambience. more

Great Food, Really Pricey 8/3/2003

We thought the food was fabulous - tasty and artistic from the appetizers through the desserts. We also enjoyed our drinks. However, everything is very, very expensive. There are also few vegetarian selections. Our server was great at first but lapsed toward the end of our visit. The ambience is a lot of fun - anime, art, lighting, and music - but don't go if you want to have a conversation; it's really loud and dark. All in all, a great restaurant if you don't mind paying through the nose and yelling at your dinner companions. Don't go if you prefer simple dining at easy prices. Pros: great food, good service, fun atmosphere Cons: expensive, loud, a bit overdone more

Blowfish Fun 8/1/2003

The south bay sure needed a restaurant like this. Finally a sushi atmosphere that isn't just sake bombs! The staff was great and always smiling. I have taken my friends and we all love the music and upbeat atmosphere. I would highly recommend Blowfish to all the twenty-somethings in San Jose. more
