A Williamsburg Institution 3/17/2010

EarWax is a Williamsburg institution. It has been around before the word hipster was used for anything besides explaining my grandma' hip replacement after she got mugged in Brighton Beach. The owner is an old codger who has been collecting records for his own enjoyment which completely translate into the stock he carries. He even goes outside his tastes and sells records that I would play on my worst enemies turntable, but that is the beauty of the store, it is not prejudice and is open to the fact that there are many different tastes in music, good, bad, interesting, plain crap, usually in the dollar bin. This prices are completely reasonable ,they are not snobby and will completely engage in explaining to you the artist, history or the artists and/or record and never force you into a purchase. The only drawback is that you have to wade through a sea of hipsters from the bedford station to get there. But i guess if people can pick up poop after their dogs, they can spend the 5 minutes walking down bedford to get to the shop. If they dont have what you want and cant order it, they would be the first ones to tell you where you can get it. They love vinyl but are not prejudice towards new medias. At the end of the day it is all about the music for them and if the buyer likes total crap, they will still entertain their tastes hiding their disgust and disdain with a nice helpful smile. Unfortunately too many people have forgotten that music is about enjoyment and positive reactions even if you are listening to joy division and these guys never forget that. It has been an institution in Williamsburg for a reason, its a great store. They also selll some turntables and amazing box sets and like I mentioned, if they dont have what you want and cant order it, they would gladly do all they can to help you find your record wherever it might be. If you a looking for pretense, some tight black jeans and a ""who the hell are you"" type of attitude, then exit the store, turn left or right and you will find what you want in a matter of feet. If you are looking for great music at great prices, sold by a bunch of nice guys who really know their stuff, this is the place. Pros: Great Records Cons: Attracts Annoying HIpsters more
