Haven't been in for a while, it was ok. Honestly I don't see what the fuss is all about? My wife's gnocchi was burnt and under seasoned. I had the Mahi-Mahi, and boy it was bad! The pistou seemed to overpower me with garlic, the carrots and potatoes were kinda mushy, too much pepper. One dish under seasoned and one dish over seasoned, I guess if we would of combined them, the seasoning would of been there. Pros: Service and atmosphere Cons: Food more

From wine to apps to desserts -- delicious. I particularly liked the artisinal mushrooms on toast as an appetizer -- just savory and yummy. The fried chicken was very good -- texture and flavor. The item I liked least (cabbage stuffed with pilaf) was still OK. I came from the office with a tie on... and was the only one in the place with a tie. The rest of the clientele had a purposeful and studied casualness that might have been annoying if the staff hadn't made me feel welcome. Not that I thought that they liked me personally or anything; the fact was that these guys were consummate pros. Good cozy establishment in the highlands area of Denver. Somewhat limited but seasonal menu. Service very good. Had to wait for 15 minutes in the bar for table but since we had a reserveation the manager brought compliementary appetizers. Would go back. more

The Duo is tucked away downtown. It is warm and inviting with a knowledgeable staff. The menu is seasonal offering a great reason to go at least 4 time a year to see what is being cooked up. Currently on the menu is the best Buttermilk Fried Chicken you could ever imagine. Paying $18 for a plate of fried chicken at an upscale restaurant sounds ridiculus, but trust me, you will realize why you did it with the very first tender and juicy bite. It is magnificent! Bobby, the mananger and Friday night bartender, is amazing. He is very knowledgeable of the menu and makes a fantastic cocktail. The rest of the staff is absolutely amazing too! It is a great place to go and have a delicious meal at a moderate price. You will not be disappointed! Pros: There are too many to list! Cons: Sometimes it can be hard to get in without a reservation on the weekend (as well as finding a place to park), but dinner at the bar is just as nice! more

We've had dinner at Duo three times in the last 5 months. The prices for the wine list and quality ingredients are an incredible value - we used to go to Cafe Star for the value, but ever since Chef Rebecca left, the food has gone downhill. But I digress. The ingredients at Duo are fresh and simple. The asparagus salad consisted of fresh large stems that were the biggest we'd ever seen; the flavor combo of butter, lemon, pinenuts, tomatoes, bacon (and other stuff I'm missing, I'm sure) was pleasantly surprising. The lamb meatballs (perfectly textured and soft) w/pureed eggplant and a spicy tomato sauce was also amazing, but simple at the same time. The Shortribs Gnocchi is our current fave; lots of tender short rib meat w/soft homemade gnocchi! Last season, we had the quail and duck dishes - both were executed very well, but it didn't leave us panting like the current menu. The caesar salad is incredible - so different w/whole grilled red onion slices, polenta croutons and white anchovies, but very familiar at the same time. They use whole romaine leaves, which is nice. There are some dishes, however, that don't quite live up to the others. The deviled eggs were on both last and this season's menu - they're just deviled eggs with a few drops of caviar and a sliver of prosciutto. Didn't seem anything special to us. The crabcake is perfectly round and fully breaded (so you can't see the meat through the breading), then dropped in a deep fryer, which is kind of sacrilege to my Philly-born husband. A crabcake should be lightly breaded so that the meat shows through, and it should be pan fried. The dessert/pastry chef is truly the most talented of her kind in Denver. The brown butter cake with marscapone cheese we had last night was truly amazing. I'm so glad we ordered it, b/c it went off the menu as of today, our server told us. Great atmosphere and even greater food. Perry the waiter was very knowledgable of the dishes and made a great wine selection. I had the pork chop and it was tops. I love the way they served the coffee in a personal sized French press. The lemon cake desert was also wonderful and had great texture, especially the warm and cold difference between the bottom and top of the cake.\r The menu is phenomenal and with every seasonal change continues to be so. The chef at Duo really understands flavor profiles. The menu is eclectic (for Denverites, reminiscent of Sean Kelly's food). Hardwood floors, exposed brick, owners are lovely attentive and involved. Went to Duo last night with friends. Was not sure what to expect, but was excited with the prospects. Menu was not overwhelming, and it was easy to key in on what I wanted without too much trouble. Had the rissotto fritters which were good. Reminded me of hushpuppies with an added surprises of shrimp in the middle. Yum. Had the pork stew as my entree. Initially thought it would be a bowl of stew, but was delighted with what I got instead..it was AMAZINGLY good! The pork was braised so well it fell apart when my fork lightly pressed on it, and did remind of pork from a good homemade stew. Very delicious.\r \r But lastly....the dessert. Ordered the special of 2 macroons and two little mini scoops of sorbet (was it peach? I can't remember). What an amazing pairing of flavores. The sorbet matched the macroons well, and together, created a dessert that was refreshing, and not too sweet, or heavy. A great way to end my meal. \r \r Two thumbs up for sure. Dinner, service, dessert..all pushing me towards doing a ""duo"" appearance, and heading to the restaurant again! Pros: The desserts! Appreciate the portion size too. Duo is a quaint little neighborhood spot worth checking out, but certainly not worth all the hype.\r \r The menu is small but diverse and interesting. They change it seasonally as ingredients fall in and out of availability. The wine list is small, well selected and well priced. You won't find anything silly expensive, but you won't be choosing from schwag either.\r \r The food is good, brunch is nothing special at all, in fact, it could use some work. The desserts are some of the best in Denver. They employ a great full time pastry chef, very impressive for a place of this size. Some larger restaurants should take note.\r \r They do not take reservations for parties under six. As Duo has become more popular, this is not a good policy. Also, the bar staff and some of the wait staff need serious training. The room can get so loud it's very hard to hear what they are saying and they seem to not like to repeat themselves. On a busy Friday night, we ordered a bottle of wine but they were out of stem wear. It took about 10 minutes to get glasses and the server brought us glasses fresh out of the sanitizer. She then proceeded to try and pour wine into glasses that were to hot to handle. ??? She was utterly confused when I asked her to wait. \r \r If the small bar is busy, as it serves as the waiting area for tables, the service plummets as well, slow, inattentive and generally in the weeds.\r \r It's a good place to go, but they need to work a bit on service and figure out a way to take reservations. my husband and i went to duo for restaurant week, so we were limited to the prix-fix menu they were offering. but the food that was offered was delicious!! the staff was very friendly and accomodating (we were very early for our reservation). the restaurant is tiny, so definitely make reservations. seriously, the best lentils i've ever had! Went for 5280 restaurant week a few weeks back and really enjoyed the ambiance and food. Open kitchen so you can watch the goings-on. Actually, the layout and design will remind you of Potager. They have a fantastic, affordable wine list and a very knowledgeable wait staff. Stay for dessert - they are fantastic! It's a wonderful spot in the Highlands - grab a date and go! more

My third visit to Duo continued to delight in many ways, but left me a bit frustrated as well. Don't get me wrong -- the food is delicious and creative and the desserts are to-die-for. The ambience is charming. But, the wait for a party of four (reservations for fewer than six not accepted) on a Saturday night is now an hour to an hour and a half. I was hoping this was the worst-case scenario, but it was spot-on. And with the place overflowing with people, it's not like you can find a comfortable spot at the bar to accommodate your group while you wait. Anyway, we made it through that part (sorry to the couple trying to eat at the bar who I nudged about a dozen times) and were finally seated. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, she had to ask each of us to repeat our order; when the dining area is full, the noise level is fairly mind-numbing. Even at an intimate table for four, most of our evening's conversation went something like this -- ""Huh? What did you say? I didn't catch that."" Luckily, once the food arrived, we were all too busy enjoying our scrumptious meals to worry about talking over the drone of the crowd. And, by the time our killer desserts made it to the table, the place had thinned out a bit, and we were able to thoroughly enjoy ourselves. My advice: Check out Duo on a weeknight or go early or late. It's a great place -- and obviously very popular. Just be prepared for the downside of all the buzz. i live in the potter highlands and it is refreshing to see a neighborhood joint like this. it is elegant, yet casual. the food is always new and innovative (seasonal menu). i've always sat at the bar and had superb service. good wine selection, good bartenders, and a fabulous crab cake. always busy, and always accommodating. the best bathrooms in denver too. more

I can't believe my eyes when I saw the Citysearch rating for Duo at 8.5. Must be a calculation error. This restaurant is one of the best in town. Great Ambience, excellent food, great neighborhood, romantic, and friendly. I must say, I am a bit of a casual eatery snob having lived in NYC and Philly for so many years. Duo rocked it out of the park! Their menu changes frequently, the portions are just the right size (not the ""I'm an American and therefore I must overeat size""). The appetizers are EXTREMLY resonably priced, even as low as $3.00!!! So if you just want a quick bite, sit at the bar, order an appetizer and a drink, chat with neighbors and go home. Our 4th visit tonight, two dinners and two brunches. Each time we dine here, I am always pleasantly surprised how wonderful the food is. Chef Broening has been in the kitchen every time we've dined here and the food has always been great. Denver needs more restaurants like this, fantastic food for reasonable prices!
