Great salad 8/11/2010

My Husband & I ate lunch there yesterday & were not that impressed. I had the mixed green salad with chicken which was good. My Husband had the french dip thinking that the Driskill would have some of the best prime roast beef in the city. Not the case though: ( Maybe this place should stick to being a bakery & not a cafe? Just saying.. you be the judge but we have way better places in Austin for lunch!\r \r Cindy S more

Great Cinnamon Roll and Illy coffee 1/25/2009

Just wanted to try a new place for a pastry and espresso. The cinnamon roll is actually out of croissant dough-- at least it tastes that way. Yummy! And Illy coffee is always a nice treat. If you are going to dish out a few bucks at the chain across the street... Don't. Just fork out a dollar or two more and get something made in house at the 1886 Bakery! I used to live over in the Brazos lofts across the street from this place. I loved the food, but I never will go back because of the repeatly rude service. Maybe because I am young and appear to not have "" money"" the servers where awful. If you eat here take it to go! more

Tasty Ceasar Salad--done right; recommend breakfast too 12/19/2006

Cold Coffee 12/13/2006

This place is an awesome choice to have a sober hang-out at 6th street. Valet parking at Driskill is reasonable-$10 bucks if you don't want to hassled looking for a parking space. \r Cakes are not too spectacular and the coffee is lukewarm. Very disappointing and bizarre!\r Customer service is good. That makes up for the coffee's temperature. Pros: Cheap Valet Parking, Great Ambience Cons: Lukewarm coffee more

Skip the salad..get the dessert! 4/12/2006

Although the food looks good here I can never get past eating dessert first! The pies are wonderful but my favorite is the apple crisp a la mode. Being in the Driskill Hotel gives it a very nice ambiance for relaxing. Pros: Great food, Scenery Cons: Parking, Limited seating, Pricey more

Four strikes, you're out 12/19/2003

Normally I wouldn't return to a restaurant that was so subpar, but since it's in the neighborhood, I tried again after a first meal (which was shamefully bad). Wanting to support the downtown neighborhood, I ate there a total of four times. The only meal that was even passable was a sandwich, but it was quite ordinary. Overpriced, but then any price would be too much for this below-average, extremely ordinary, and poorly prepared food. What a waste of a good location. Loved It! 2/7/2003

Came in for dinner on Saturday. We had an excellent meal and drinks. The meatloaf was great! Our wiatress was a lot of fun and talked us into an ice cream dessert even though it meant 30 more minutes on the treadmill. The next day I came back and picked up a carrot cake for my daughters birthday-She Loved IT!. Pros: cool atmosphere, Easy cake pick up more

Wonderful Desserts !!! 2/5/2003

My wife and I went with friends to the Paramount Theatre last week and walked to the 1886 Cafe and Bakery for coffee and dessert after the show. The dessert menu is wonderful!!! I had the 1886 Chocolate Cake and my wife had the peach cobbler ala mode. Our friends split a Banana Split. Our server Sarah was sweet and the atmosphere is charming. It was the perfect way to end a great night. more

Wasn't Impressed 1/6/2003

Went there on the other recommendations and was VERY disappointed. $10 sandwiches that were very basic and unappealing - outrageous! Waiter was annoying and even interrupted all conversation at the table and when he had everyone's full and complete attention, only then did he ask if everything is okay. Also, while ordering each person's choice was ""excellent"" (use your best Monty Burns impression). Drink glasses remained empty after several prompts. Seven people, five sandwiches, one soup and salad and one dessert came to over $100 (plus the $6 for parking at Valet WITH validation from the restaurant) Pros: Beautiful Setting, Central Location Cons: Terrible Food Value, Bad Service, Meager portions more

Great atmosphere; limited menu 12/2/2002

Sandwiches are highly recommended. Don't be afraid to ask for modifications-- Don't want a croissant - ask for whole wheat or foccacia bread. Avoid the soups-- the pepperoni soup is particularly unappealing-- the others are mediocre on a good day. The desserts are off the chart and if you can justify the calories-- indulge yourself. Another strong plus is the atmosphere. You can actually talk and enjoy your companion. A big plus in my book. Pros: atmosphere, great sandwiches, fabulous desserts Cons: limited menu more

I've been twice now and have been extremely satisfied with 1886 Cafe. I had the corn soup and turkey sandwich the first time and the 1886 burger the second. If you are in the downtown area you must go here for lunch. more

A Cafe and beyond! 9/24/2002

It was beyond a cafe experience dining at the driskill cafe and bakery. The atmosphere is sophisticated and superb, and the staff has service down to perfection - and the waiters are quite handsome. The food is a bit pricey for a cafe, but well worth it once you bite in. I would recomend this to anyone looking for a nice and fun place to dine. Pros: Service more
